CALLUM MACAULAY HEADS
THE SCOTS IN FIRST ROUND
OF RIVERSDALE CUP

Callum Macaulay was the leading Scot at the end of the first round of the Riversdale Cup, the prestigeous 72-hole Australian stroke-play tournament at Riversdale Golf Club, near Melbourne.
The Tulliallan man, pictured right, occupied joint 13th place with a two-under-par 70 on a day when Australians hogged the leading places - Scott Arnold setting the pace on 65, a shot ahead of Rohan Blizard with Jason Scrivener and Josh Younger sharing third place on 67.
Macaulay birdied the fifth but dropped shots at the eighth and ninth to be out in one-over 37.
He got in the groove after the turn with a bogey-free inward half, highlighted by birdies at the 10th, 16th and 18th for 33 home.
Wallace Booth from Comrie was in joint 20th place with a 71, despite running up a double bogey 5 at the short third. He bounced back with a birdie at the fourth but promptly dropped another shot at the fifth before birdieing the sixth to be out in 37. An eagle 3 at the 13th was typical swashbuckling Booth play and a birdie at the 15th put him two under par for the day before he dropped a late shot at the 17th to be home in 34.
Carnoustie's Keir McNicoll finished in joint 42nd place on 73 with halves of 38 and 35. He had a double bogey at the second.
Scottish match-play champion John Gallagher had a 74 to be in joint 58th position. John had an early double bogey - at the third - and took 39 shots to reach the turn.
Young Fraser Fotheringham from Nairn had one of the best outward halves of the day - two-under-par 34 - with birdies at the second, fourth, fifth and ninth and shots shed at the first and seventh. A triple bogey 7 at the 10th took the wind out of Fraser's sails and he subsided to bogeys at the 13th and 15th for 41 shots home and a 75 which put him in joint 82nd place.
Scott Henry (Cardross) also had a 75 with halves of 39 and 36. He birdied the 10th, 13th and 15th.
Stuart Burns (Auchterarder) had a 78 for joint 133rd place. His halves of 39 included a double boey 6 at the ninth.
Scottish stroke-play champion Kevin McAlpine is back in a share of 141st place after a 79 which included an inward half of 41. He bogeyed the first, second and fifth before birdieing the seventh and ninth. But that did not turn the corner for the Alyth man. He dropped further shots at the 10th and 11th before running up a double bogey 7 at the long 15th and then dropping a single shot at the 16th.
Young Tom Spencer from Inchmarlo had an 83 for a share of 155th place in a field of 162. Tom had halves of 42 and 41, having double bogeys at the ninth, 11th and 17th.
