Scot's great recovery from four early bogeys

MARTIN LAIRD BEATS CUT
WITH A BIRDIE AT LAST
HOLE IN SONY OPEN

Martin Laird is in the money in his debut appearance on the US PGA Tour - but it was a close-run thing for the Glasgow man to beat the halfway cut in the Sony Open at Waialae Country Club, Honolulu in Hawaii.
The former Scottish youths champion and US college circuit player made a shocking start to the second round
He bogeyed the first, fourth, fifth and sixth. You cannot score like that and get away with it on the US Tour and Martin tumbled down the scoreboard after being pretty high up following a first-day 69.
Laird, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, perked up with a birdie at the ninth to be out in three-over-par 38. Two more birdies, at the 13th and 14th, improved his position to one over par on the day but he was still on the wrong side of the projected cut line as he moved into the last few holes of his second round.
And Laird got the all-important fourth birdie in 10 holes at the very last one. That gave him a par-matching 70 and a 36-hole aggregate of one-under-par 139, which was the limit mark to make the cut.
The US PGA Tour has a new policy this year to limit the field size on the weekend, and it knocked out John Daly, Brandt Snedeker and 16 other players who, in previous years, would have beaten the halfway chop.
Daly and those who finished at even-par 140 still received official last-place money of $9,699 and 46 points toward the FedExCup. But they won't have a tee time on Saturday.
The policy allows for the top 70 professionals and ties, as always, but if that total number exceeds 78 players, then the closest number of players to 70 advance to the final two rounds. In this year's Sony Open, 69 players finished at one-under 139 and only they will contest the weekend rounds.
Korean K J Choi continues to lead after a 65 for 11-under-par 129. He is two ahead of Kevin Na (67-64).
Leading European is Spaniard Alejandro Canizares with a pair of 67s for 134. US Tour rookie Kenneth Ferrie from the North-east of England is in joint 20th position after shooting 66 and 70 for 136.
