SEVE TO PLAY US SENIORS TOUR
- AND IN OPEN AT CARNOUSTIE
Seve Ballesteros, the man who couldn't hit fairways when he was at his peak, is going to play in the US Masters in April and then campaign on the American Seniors' circuit which goes under the name of Champions' Tour.
The 49-year-old Spaniard will also play in our Open at Carnoustie in July. He has not played competitively since this year's Open at Royal Liverpool.
Ballesteros doesn't smile much these days. Neither would you if you had his chronic back problem. That he has a permanently sore back is not surprising the way he treated it over the golden years when he belted the ball in the general direction he was meant to go and then played great recovery golf almost without exception.
Seve did not mention his sore back when he made the announcement about becoming a regular tournament player again, albeit after his 50th birthday on April 9.
"At first I was unsure about this decision, but after playing at this year's Open, where the crowds were so kind to me and cheered me on, I started to become very excited about playing again," he said.
Courses for the Over-50s senior pro tours are a good deal shorter and not so punishing if you miss the fairway. So maybe Seve can be a born-again tournament winner?
Don't count on it!
++Seve turned pro in 1974. He won the Open championship in 1979, 1984 and 1988. He won the US Masters in 1980 and 1983. In all, Ballesteros won 87 tournaments worldwide.
