Former Scottish youths champion Martin Laird from Glasgow is in joint 22nd place after the second round of the six-round US PGA Tour Final Qualifying School at La Quinta, California.
Only the leading 30 and ties at the end of 108 holes will gain full playing rights on next year's US Tour. The next 50 and ties will be able to play on the US Nationwide Tour.
Laird, pictured right, who spent four years at Colorado State University and had reasonable success on the the American college circuit, has had rounds of 73 and 70 for a one-under-par tally of 143.
Martin, who stands 6ft 2in, had six birdies in all in his second round - the first, third, fifth, seventh, 10th and 12th.
On the debit side, he had a double bogey 6 at the ninth and single bogeys at the sixth and 18th in halves of 35.
The Scot, who has played on the Nationwide Tour, is eight strokes behind tournament leader Rich Barcelo, an American who lost his US Tour player's card at the end of the 2004 season. Rich has scored 71 and 64 for one-under-par 135.
Former major tournament winner Lee Janzen, who last had to tackle the US Tour Q School in 1989, is lying joint 44th with Ireland's Keith Nolan on the 145 mark. Lee has scored 73 and 72; Nolan 72 and 73.
