Father-Son Challenge at ChampionsGate, Florida
LANGER WINS TOP PRIZE
OF YEAR ($200,000)
PARTNERING SON
Former Ryder Cup captain Bernhard Langer and his 16-year-old son Stefan, a high school pupil in Boca Raton, Florida, birdied the last hole to win the Del Webb Father-Son Challenge tournament over the par-72, 7,363yd ChampionsGate Golf Club in Florida on Sunday.
It was golfing history repeating itself. The Langers did exactly the same 12 months ago.
They finished this past weekend with rounds of 59 and 61 under the better-ball format for a 24-under-par aggregate of 120.
Young Stefan holed a 6ft birdie putt at the last to avoid a three-way play-off against Bob and Kevin Tway and Vijay and Qass Singh who were already back in the clubhouse and heading the leaderboard on 121.
The event draws big crowds and there is some serious money to be made by the dads. The organisers don't make a song and dance about it but Bernhard Langer's first prize cheque was for the handsome of $200,000, which was his biggest prize of the year
Even down in 18th place Lee Trevino collected $40,500 for a total of 143, partnering Daniel Trevino.
All good fun. Maybe we should have a tournament like this in Britain?
