SENIOR MEN'S HOME INTERNATIONALS

SCOTS TEE OFF WITH 7-2 WIN OVER WALES
WHILE IRELAND AND ENGLAND DRAW

Scotland made a good start to the senior men’s home amateur internationals at Dunbar Golf Club today.
They beat Wales 7-2 (2-1 in the foursomes, 5-1 in the singles).
The 4 ½-4 1 ½ scoreline in the England v Ireland encounter could also be considered a good result for the Scots’ title hopes in this over-55s’ three-day contest.
Royal Aberdeen’s John Johnston made a winning debut for senior Scotland when he and Donald McCart beat Keith Stimpson and John Whitcutt of Wales in the third foursome of the opening morning of the Senior Men’s Home Internationals at Dunbar.
Johnston played for Scotland in the home internationals of 1970 and 1971 but had not worn his country’s colours since.
Scotland finished the morning with a 2-1 lead thanks to the efforts of McCart and Johnston who finished one up.
Earlier Gordon MacDonald and Alan Ferguson had lost by 3 and 1 to Brian Cramb and Basil Griffiths, while Stephen Ellis and Brian Grieve had levelled it at 1-1 overall. They beat Phil Jones and Mike Rooke by 4 and 3.
Johnston was not fielded in the singles by skipper Ian Hutcheon who inserted himself in the line-up – and won by 3 and 2 over Phil Jones.
Scotland’s other singles winners were Stephen Ellis (2 and 1), Gordon MacDonald (2 and 1), Alan Ferguson (one hole) and Brian Grieve (4 and 3).
Only Donald McCart (beaten on the final green) was a Scotland loser in the afternoon but John Johnston may have to be content with only a foursomes outing again on the second day, so strong is the home nation’s line-up.
England established a 2 ½- ½ lead over Ireland in their foursomes but, somewhat surprisingly, conceded the singles 4-2 to the Irish.
