£683 PRIZE FOR RETIRED HAZLEHEAD PRO
IAN SMITH JOINT THIRD
IN PGA SUPER 60s
Retired Hazlehead professional Ian Smith, pictured left, finished joint third in the PGA Super-60s championship over 36 holes at Forest Pines Golf Club, South Humberside.
Ian had scores of 72 and 70 for a four-under-par total of 142 to finish five shots behind joint winners, fellow-Scot Gordon Gray and England’s Frank Hil earned £1,125 each.
On the same 142 mark as Ian were Ireland's Hugh Jackson and England's Hedley Muscroft. All three received £683.
Smith, president of the North-east Golfers' Alliance, keeps his eye in by playing in the midweek competitions.
Always a club pro (he moved up to be the City of Aberdeen professional, based at Hazlehead Golf Club from Hesketh Golf Club, Lancashire), Dundee-born Ian did have one or two outstanding performances over the years when he rubbed shoulders with the big guns of the tournament world.
In the Centenary Open over the Old Course, St Andrews in 1960 - Kel Nagle (Australia) was the winner - Ian had a top-20 finish. In those days, all the competitors had to play a two-round qualifying competition before going on to the 72-hole championship proper.
