SGU BELHAVEN FINAL ON TUESDAY
SPOTLIGHT ON CLUB CAPTAINS AND SECRETARIES
The eagerly anticipated final of the inaugural Belhaven Best Captains & Secretaries Championship takes place on Tuesday at the Duke’s Course, St Andrews, with 40 clubs from across Scotland vying for the title and bragging rights among their peers.
The new event – created this year by the Scottish Golf Union with the support of Belhaven Breweries – has brought together captains and secretaries from 200 golf clubs to compete for a national championship open to club officials who do so much hard work on behalf of their clubs and the sport’s national governing body.
Four regional finals took place between May and August to determine the finalists, with the leading five clubs at each venue qualifying for the St Andrews event.
Host club Murcar Links – led by captain Derek Mortimer – took the honours in the North regional final with a fine score of 61, whilst East Lothian club Gifford, with secretary Maurice McEwan in fine form, won the south final at Peebles with an excellent 63.
The Crail Golfing Society pairing of captain David Maiden and secretary David Roy enjoyed a three-shot victory in the regional final at Glenbervie. Hayston Golf Club’s Allan Livingstone and Ray Bryan were best in the west with an impressive six-under par 66 at Renfrew.
Belhaven Breweries Sales Director Jim Young is pleased with their sponsorship of the championship, part of a £150,000 three-year investment into Scottish amateur golf from the company:
“We are delighted with the response to our inaugural year’s sponsorship of the championship. Not only because we’ve had a full complement of entries at each of the regional qualifying events, but the feedback from the participants has been extremely posititve, which is all important.”
“Belhaven Best is now well established as the No. 1 ale brand in Scotland’s clubs and we wanted to say thank you to those clubs who have shown support for Belhaven over the years and to others who may wish to have us as their preferred supplier.”
The Duke’s, owned by the Old Course Hotel, Resort & Golf Spa, has undergone a major transformation this year and will undoubtedly offer a fantastic new challenge for the championship competitors in Tuesday’s final.
Hamish Grey, the SGU’s Chief Executive, added:
“The Belhaven Best Captains & Secretaries Championship has been a great success in its first year. We’re indebted to Belhaven for their sponsorship of this event and many other SGU activities – their investment is invaluable in helping us implement our strategy of supporting member clubs and providing national championships for golfers at all levels.”
The final gets underway at 9.00am on Tuesday, with Crail and Alyth out in the first group, whilst Kingussie and Castle Heather are the back markers teeing off at 11.50am.
