SCOTTISH MIXED FOURSOMES
FIONA AND KEVIN MAKE
IT TWO TITLE WINS
OUT OF TWO AT
DEESIDE
Leuchars couple Fiona Lockhart and Kevin Hastie, pictured right, have played in the Scottish open amateur mixed foursomes only twice. They won the title on their debut at Nairn Dunbar four years ago … and toda, at Deeside Golf Club, they maintained their 100 per cent success rate.
The tournament was sponsored by Aberdeen-based solicitors Paull and Williamsons.
Fiona, who works on the Scottish Golf Union staff, has a happy knack of collecting titles. She won the Scottish women’s amateur championship at Cruden Bay last year and, just a few weeks ago, she collected the Scottish women’s foursomes championship in partnership with Elaine Moffat.
Scratch player Fiona, a member of the St Regulus club, St Andrews, and Kevin, a +1 St Andrews GC member, won the Scottish mixed title by three shots with a gross 73 over the Bieldside course.
They looked like they were going to win nothing when they stood three over par on the ninth tee, having bogeyed the third, fifth and seventh. Then Kevin pitched to 2ft to set up a birdie 3 for a two-over-par outward half of 38 – and that was the turning point,.
They bogeyed the 10th but Kevin hit a superb five-iron tee shot and Fiona holed the 4ft putt for a birdie 2 at the 12th. Two further bogeys at the 15th and 16th were followed by a pitch-and-putt birdie 3 at the 17th en route to an inward half of one-over 35.
Playing partners Carol and Alistair Eddie summed up the performance: “Kevin’s short game, his wedge approach shots in particular, was impressive while Fiona holed everything.”
Although Kevin Hastie had not seen the course previously, Fiona played a couple of round over it last summer as member of Scotland’s squad warming up for the European team championship in Sweden.
Twice Ayrshire county champion Lesley Hendry (Routenburn) and Brian Moore, a +2 Largs GC member, were runners-up with a 76 (39-37). A double bogey 6 at the 11th, where Lesley went out of bounds off the tee, plus a bogey-bogey finish after a birdie 3 at 15th cost them the title
The leading handicap award was won by Megan Clyne (Deeside), who had her 13th birthday a week or two ago, and Graeme Mitchell, the +2 Northern GC member who is one of the top under-18 players in the North-east.
Megan and Graeme, with a deduction of 10 (half their combined handicap), had a net 67 to pip Jacolyn Henderson (Deeside) and Nicholas Henderson (Craibstone) by a single shot.
There were some late withdrawals but there was a final field of 48 couples
