North of Scotland boys’ champion Graeme Mitchell added another title to his 2006 collection when he won the Platform 2 36-hole boys’ golf championship over the Newmachar Swailend course today.
Mitchell shot 68 and 69 for a seven-under-par total of 137 – five under the combined CSS of 71 and 71 – to win by one shot from home-course teenager John Duff who had a pair of 69s.
William Bremner (Edzell) was third on 141 with 71 and 70.
The leading North challengers shared fourth place on 142 – Chris Gaittens (Fortrose & Rosemarkie), Kyle Godsman (Hopeman) and Neil Howitt (Nairn Dunbar).
North-east (1475) retained the team title from Angus (1477) and North (1480).
Mitchell, only just turned 18 and a +2 player, is having a memorable last season in junior golf. Apart from the North of Scotland title, he has set a new Hazlehead record of 62 which will earn him an all expenses paid trip to Dubai Creek, courtesy of a national newspaper, and he will go to Celtic Manor before that as the leading Scottish qualifier for the Nick Faldo Junior Series Grand Final.
“I played pretty steady,” said Graeme, which is a bit of an understatement. In fact, he hit 32 of the 36 Swailend greens in regulations, which is a strike rate that would please any tour pro.
“My short irons are my strongest part of my game and they were spot on today. I would have had two quite low scores if I had been able to sink the birdie putts.”
North-east won the team event but only by a very narrow margin – two shots over 36 holes in the best 10 individual scores to count, morning and afternoon.
North-east totalled 1475 (743-732) and Angus 1477 (745-742) with third-placed North 1480 (753-727) having the lowest second-round total.
The Angus District will host next year’s championship.
