Staysure Tour Qualifying School marks the beginning of the over-50s season in Europe as five men will earn playing privileges for the coming season. Here are five things you need to know…

Picturesque Portugal
Those making it through to Final Stage will tee it up on the Pinta Course at Pestana Golf Resort in Carvoeiro, on Portugal's Algarve coastline, over four rounds in an attempt to secure playing privileges for the 2019 season. Vale de Pinta, a par 71 course, is the long-running host of Final Stage Qualifying School and is known for its enjoyable yet challenging layout, as well as its beauty on the picturesque Algarve.
Up for grabs
There are five 2019 Staysure Tour cards on offer at Q-School. First Stage was contested over 36 holes — at two separate courses — last week and those who made it through join the already-exempt players at this week’s Final Stage. Hopefuls will compete over three rounds before a cut is made in advance of the final 18 holes. Only those within eight shots of fifth place will make the cut and therefore contest the final round. Should there be a tie for fifth place after the fourth round, a hole-by-hole play-off will occur until one player remains.
From qualifier to champion
Qualifying School offers players the chance to join the over-50s game’s elite, and two of last year’s graduates grasped that opportunity with both hands. Englishmen David Shacklady and Paul Streeter both earned their Staysure Tour cards in Portugal last year and went on to achieve success later in the season.
Shacklady was the first to do so, winning the VTB Russian Open Golf Championship (Senior) in August, before countryman and friend Streeter followed in his footsteps two weeks later at the Travis Perkins Masters.
The win at Woburn gave Streeter the taste for victory and it was not long before he returned to the winner’s circle. The 52 year old earned his second win of the season at the Costa Blanca Benidorm Senior Golf Masters, defeating Miguel Ángel Jiménez in a play-off to join Clark Dennis and Scotland's Gary Orr as the only two-time winners of 2018.
History maker
American Clark Dennis made history in 2017 by becoming the first man to win the John Jacobs Trophy in the same season he earned a card from Qualifying School. He failed to earn playing privileges in 2016 but returned to Q-School the next year and earned one of the five cards by finishing fourth at Vale de Pinta. A stand-out season followed as Dennis triumphed twice – at the Senior Italian Open presented by Villaverde Resort and the Dutch Masters – in addition to three runner-up finishes and a one other top ten as he topped the Order of Merit and became the first American to have his name etched onto the John Jacobs Trophy.
All to play for
Four rounds separate five men from full Staysure Tour playing status for 2019 and often the most consistent find themselves in possession of a card at the end of the week, but this is not always the case.
Last year’s Q-School winner Rafael Gomez had to overcome adversity to taste success after 72 holes. The Argentinian’s hopes were in tatters after an opening round of 80, nine over par, but he made an incredible recovery as he went 16 under par through the final three rounds to finish four shots ahead of John Kemp, who finished second in Portugal.

McIntosh in triple tie for first place at Staysure Senior Tour Q School Stage 1

Turnhouse Golf Club amateur Euan McIntosh figured in a triple tie for first place at the Staysure Senior Tour Qualifying School Stage 1 at Gramacho Golf Course, Lagoa on the Algarve.
McIntosh had scores of 68 and 70 for a total of 138 which was matched by Canadian David Morland (68-70) and American John Inman (67-71).
Scots Andrew Plunkett (80-80) and Robert Hunter (84-77) missed the cut in T54 and 58th positions.
At the Silves course, Ter-chang Lang (Taiwan), with a pair of 68s, headed the 23 qualifiers with tallies of 143 and better.
Scots Paul Blaikie (74-71), tied 27th, and Alan Tait (72-74), tied 30th, missed the cut.
A third Scot, Mike Lang retired after a 75 at Silves.

Day One report

Mark Mouland and Tim Thelen shot bogey-free rounds of 66, six under par, to lead the Paris Legends Championship by two strokes at the end of Day One at Racing Club de France La Boulie.
Mouland carded his lowest round since July 2017, while Thelen shot his lowest score of the season, as both players go in search of their first Staysure Tour win of 2018.
The Welshman got off to a quick start with a birdie on the first before he eagled the par five fourth. Without dropping a shot on his front nine, Mouland continued his good work with an eagle on the 11^th to move one shy of early leader Thelen, before he birdied the last to join the American on six under par.
Thelen claimed the early lead as he holed three birdies in his final five holes of his front nine. The American, a five-time winner on the Staysure Tour, carded three birdies on his back nine, including a 20-foot gain on the 18^th to take the outright lead before Mouland joined him.
With players unable to reach their target, Thelen was delighted with his position following his opening round at Golf de La Boulie.
“I drove it well and I putted very well today,” he said. “It’s a golf course that is lined with trees and tree-lined golf courses fit my eye.
“I had nine holes when I arrive on Monday and then played the Pro-Am on Tuesday and I liked what I saw. The par threes out here are fantastic, and I played them well today.
“I struck the ball well, probably the best I have all year, and holed some putts and I ended up with a 66. I haven’t played well all year, so my back is up against the wall and I’ll have to see what I’m made of, but there are two days left.
“I hit it a little bit left off the tee on 18, and I really can’t hook the ball, so I had to lay up. I then hit a really nice sand wedge into the green and it just stayed on, and then I holed a 20-footer for birdie to finish nicely.”
Two shots behind the duo is a chasing pack of five players on four under par, including the Staysure Tour’s in-form man Markus Brier, who has finished tied third and tied second in his last two events. The Austrian was the only player in the group on four under par to shoot a bogey-free round of 68, joining Peter Baker, Mauricio Molina, Phillip Price and Paul Wesselingh for a share of third.
Jean-François Remesy, aiming to become the first Frenchman to win the Paris Legends Championship, leads the home charge after his two under par round of 70, and shares 14^th place with James Kingston and Gordon Manson.

Senior Scots lose to Irish at Southerness

Ireland beat Scotland 5.5-3.5 and England beat Wales 6-3 on the opening day of the Senior Men's Home Internationals at Southerness Golf Club.
Scotland took the foursomes 2-1 but Brotherston was the only home winner in the singles which Ireland took by a 4.5-1.5 margin.
Nairn's Robert Smith won his foursome 5 and 4 in partnership with Malcolm Reid and halved his singles tie against Liam Halpin
England established a 3-1 foursomes lead over Wales who shared the singles 2.5-2.5

Robert MacKay wins North District Seniors' 

Championship at Maverston

Robert MacKay (Fortrose and Rosemarkie) won the North District Seniors' Championship for the Macallan Trophy at Maverston Golf Club today in a very tight finish.
Mackay headed a field of 35 competitors with a round of 76, one shot ahead of Andy MacDonald (Isle of Harris) and Michael Wilson (Moray), both of whom returns 77s. MacDonald was placed second on a card countback.
Robert Smith (Nairn) won Category A scratch (55 to 64 years) with a 78.
Patrick Smith (Nairn) won Category B scratch (65 to 70 years), also with a 78.
James MacPherson (Moray) won Category C scratch (71 years and over) with an 80.

Senior rookie Shacklady scores first win in 

Russian Open

David Shacklady secured an emotional victory at Moscow Country Club on Sunday as a final round 69 gave him a two-shot triumph at the VTB Russian Open Golf Championship (Senior).

The Englishman finished on eight under par, two shots clear of Welsh duo Stephen Dodd and Phillip Price, the latter of whom led after both the first and second rounds in Moscow but posted a one over par 73 on Day Three.

Shacklady began the day two shots behind overnight leader Price, but took the outright lead after the front nine on Sunday thanks to three birdies going out before navigating the back nine in level par.

Playing in his first year on the Staysure Tour, Shacklady was clearly emotional after securing his maiden title.

“It’s unbelievable, absolutely unbelievable,” he said. “It’s a bit of a blur at the moment. My aim was just to keep my card and now I’ve done that comfortably.

“It’s just unbelievable. I’ve been playing great. I played great in the last event at the London Golf Club. I spent some time with my coach Simon Edwards and it felt great there and I’ve brought it here.

“I just stayed patient and I hit it great, to be fair. I managed to hold them all off with a load of pars, which was lovely.”

The 51 year old has three top 20 finishes to his name prior to this week’s event but he admits to feeling frustrated and putting himself under too much pressure in previous weeks.

“I’ve been frustrated that I’ve not really got to where I feel I can play, my level,” he said. “I’ve perhaps done a bit too much leaderboard watching, a bit too much pressure on myself and I feel like I’ve been playing catch-up at every event.

“To get up there and stay up there and finish it off against class players like this, it’s unbelievable. I don’t know when I’ll actually believe it to be honest.”

Shacklady, who dedicated his win to John O’Connor, a friend and former colleague at Ormskirk Golf Club in the north of England who recently passed away, admits he’s having ‘the time of his life’ on the Staysure Tour.

“I’m having the time of my life,” he said. “I’ve watched these guys on TV all my life so playing with them is just a dream to start with. To contend with them and now to win is unbelievable.

“They are proven players and have been for many years. Phillip has played in The Ryder Cup and Stephen has won many titles.

“There’s a lot of winners in the field and you know they’re not going to give you a title, you’ve got to earn it. I was nervous but I managed to keep my head and pars were good, thankfully.”

Price was Shacklady’s nearest challenger for most of the final round, but two bogeys in his final four holes ensured he had to settle for a share of second with countryman Dodd.

Behind the Welsh duo were José Coceres, Malcolm MacKenzie, Mauricio Molina and Gary Wolstenholme on three under par, while Simon P Brown and Chris Williams were a shot further back on two under par.

Williams carded the low round of the week on Sunday, signing for a six under par 66 after carding rounds of 73 and 75 on the first two days.

The Staysure Tour will now visit Hanbury Manor Marriott Hotel and Country Club for the Willow Senior Golf Classic between August 24-26.

New caps in England teams to challenge for

European senior honours

New caps Sue Spencer, Trevor Foster and Rupert Kellock are named in the England sides for the European senior team championships. 

Foster, the British senior champion (pictured top), and Kellock will be joined in the men’s team by Ian Attoe, Stephen East, Richard Latham and Richard Partridge. 

 

In the women’s team, Spencer will play alongside Julie Brown, Jackie Foster, Aileen Greenfield, Helen Lowe and Cath Rawthore.

 

The championships will be played from September 4-8, with the women competing at Mont Garni Golf Club, Belgium, and the men travelling to Diamond Country Club, Austria. 

 

Last year the women won the silver medal at their European championship while the men took bronze.

Ian Attoe (Worplesdon, Surrey) won the English senior men’s amateur for the second time in May and is currently second in the England Golf senior order of merit. 

 

Stephen East (Wyke Ridge, Yorkshire) is a past winner of the English, Spanish, Portuguese and Scottish senior titles.  He also won the senior order of merit in 2014, 2016 and 2017. 

 

Trevor Foster (Accrington and District, Lancashire) scored a runaway nine-shot win in the British seniors’ at Royal Porthcawl where he was eight-under. He has also won the Irish seniors this season and leads the order of merit.

 

Rupert Kellock (Sunningdale, Berkshire) is currently third in the order of merit after high finishes in the English and British championships and the Bill Shankland Memorial Trophy at Parkstone, Dorset. 

 

Richard Latham (Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire) was fourth in the British seniors and has twice won the English senior title.

 

Richard Partridge (Wildernesse, Kent) is a past winner of the Irish and Scottish senior titles and a runner-up in Wales.

Aileen Greenfield (Pyecombe, Sussex) is the English senior women’s amateur champion and has been runner up for three national titles.  

 

Sue Spencer, pictured right, (Whittington Heath, Staffordshire) reached the semi-finals of the senior amateur and took fourth place in the senior stroke play. 

 

Jackie Foster (Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire) won back-to-back senior stroke play titles in 2016 and 2017. 

 

Julie Brown (Trentham, Staffordshire) is a past winner of the British and English senior amateur title. 

 

Cath Rawthore (Sale, Cheshire) is also a past British champion as well as the winner of both English senior titles. 

 

Helen Lowe (Scraptoft, Leicestershire) won the English senior stroke-play title this year and is a past winner of the amateur.

Scottish Seniors' West now over 18 holes on Friday

High winds caused the cancellation of today's first round of the Scottish Seniors West of Scotland Open at Ranfurly Castle. The event, now over 18 holes, will be played  on Friday.

Jonathan Campbell of McCrea  Financial Services, the Society's major sponsor, was in attendance at Ranfurly Castle to present the McCrea Financial Services Trophy to last season's Order of Merit winner Stewart Henderson of Hamilton G.C.

Henderson and Taylor share lead at Seniors' Spring meeting at windy Powfoot

The Scottish Seniors Golfing Society season got under way with the first
round of the 36-hole spring meeting attracting a field of 126 to Powfoot Golf Club on the Solway Firth.
Conditions were very difficult with a strong wind and a couple of heavy showers leading to  high scoring.
The best rounds of the day were a couple of three-over-par 74s from Stewart
Henderson (Hamilton), the 2017 Order of Merit winner, and David Taylor
(St Andrews New). 
Henderson birdied the seventh but bogeyed the third, 10th, 14th and 18th.
Taylor had a very steady round of 15 pars and three bogeys: at the third, 16th and 18th. 
At the halfway stage, they jointly lead by one shot from a group of four
players who scored 74 - Gary Tough (Edzell), Gordon MacDonald
(Glenbervie), Jalil Aman (Grangemouth) and Jim Devaney (Clydebank and
District).
Taylor, playing off three, also leads the handicap event with a net 71. Jim Devaney (Clydebank and District) is second with a net 72, and there are five players on 73.

Drew Wilson leads Senior Order of Merit from Neish Chisholm

After two events - at Strathmore and West Kilbride - of this year's Scottish Seniors Golf Society Order of Merit, Drew Wilson, a six-handicap St Andrews New Golf Club member, leads with 34.7pt, three points ahead of Kemnay's Neish Chisholm who has a handicap of 13.
