ELAINE RATCLIFFE APPOINTED CAPTAIN OF THE
G B and IRELAND CURTIS CUP TEAM

R and A NEWS RELEASE
Elaine Ratcliffe has been appointed as the new captain of the Great Britain and Ireland Curtis Cup team for the 2020 match and will also lead the teams in the Vagliano Trophy and the Astor Trophy in 2019.
Ratcliffe, who hails from Sandbach in Cheshire, enjoyed a distinguished amateur career as a player and won the Finnish Amateur Championship in 1997 and the English Amateur Championship the following year.
She was a member of the GB and I team which defeated the United States 11½- 6½ in the 1996 Curtis Cup at Killarney and played for GB and I in the 1997 Vagliano Trophy match against the Continent of Europe, who won 12½-11½ at Royal Aberdeen.
Ratcliffe also represented GB&I as a player in the Espirito Santo Trophy and England in the European Amateur Team Championships. After turning professional, she was named Rookie of the Year by the Ladies’ European Tour in 1999 but was reinstated as an amateur in 2008.
She has since captained England in a number of international matches, including the Ladies Home Internationals and the European Amateur Team Championships, and has twice led the European team in the Patsy Hankins Trophy against Asia-Pacific.
“It is a real honour to be appointed captain of Great Britain and Ireland and I am looking forward to the challenge of preparing the team for the forthcoming international matches in 2019 and 2020,” said Ratcliffe.
“There are a number of amateur events to be played over the coming months and we will be monitoring the performances and results of golfers from Great Britain and Ireland to determine who has played their way into contention for team selection next year.”
Maria Dunne has also been confirmed as the new GB and I captain for the Junior Vagliano Trophy match against the Continent of Europe at Royal St George’s in 2019.
As a player, Dunne featured as a member of the Great Britain and Ireland team which beat the United States to win the Curtis Cup in 2016 at Dun Laoghaire and also played in the Vagliano Trophy against the Continent of Europe at Circolo Golf Bogogno last year.
She represented Ireland in the Ladies Home Internationals and European Amateur Team Championships and won the 2017 Irish Open Stroke Play Championship.
In 2018, Dunne was appointed Women and Girls Development Co-ordinator in Ireland following funding provided to the Golf Union of Ireland and the Irish Ladies Golf Union by The R and A.
“I am delighted to be named as the new captain of Great Britain and Ireland for the Junior Vagliano Trophy next year,” said Dunne.
“The Continent of Europe has enjoyed a sustained period of success since the match was inaugurated but I am looking forward to working with the most talented young players in Great Britain and Ireland as we prepare to try to win the trophy for the first time at Royal St George’s.”

USA SCORE RECORD CURTIS CUP WIN (17-3) AFTER GB and I LOSE SINGLES 8-0

R and A NEWS RELEASE
The United States defeated Great Britain and Ireland by a record-breaking 17-3 scoreline to win the 40th Curtis Cup match at Quaker Ridge, New York. The United States' points total is the highest recorded by any team in the Curtis Cup since they defeated GB and I 14½-3½ at Denver Country Club in 1982.
The winning margin of 14 points also surpassed the record of 11 points set in that same match.
The hosts held a 9-3 lead over GB and I going into today’s singles matches following the six foursomes matches and six four-balls matches played over the first two days. Sophia Schubert extended the lead for the home side to 10-3 after beating Olivia Mehaffey 2 and 1 in the first match.
Moments later, Kristen Gillman secured the vital point which clinched the Curtis Cup for the United States after a comprehensive 5 and 4 win over Annabell Fuller gave them an unassailable 11-3 lead. In doing so, Gillman became only the third player after Stacey Lewis (2008) and Bronte Law (2016) to go 5-0-0 in a single Curtis Cup match since the new three-day format was introduced.
Fifteen-year-old Lucy Li added a 5 and 4 victory against India Clyburn before Jennifer Kupcho’s 2 and 1 success over Lily May Humphreys made it 13-3 to the United States. A long-range birdie from the world's leading woman amateur golfer, Lilia Vu, made sure of a win against Sophie Lamb by two holes.
Andrea Lee came back from two down on the outward half to close her match out against Alice Hewson on the 17th hole, winning by 2 and 1 and give her side a 15-3 lead.
Lauren Stephenson sealed her match against Shannon McWilliam in style with a  birdie putt which dropped from around 12 feet to give the 20-year-old a 2 and 1 victory. Mariel Galdiano defeated Paula Grant by one hole in the last match out on the course to give the United States a 17-3 win.
The United States now lead the overall series 29-8-3. The 41st Curtis Cup match will be played at Conwy (Caernarvonshire) Golf Club in North Wales from  June 12-14, 2020.
Key Quotes:
Elaine Farquharson-Black, Captain, Great Britain and Ireland “We’re obviously very disappointed with the scoreline and all you can do is congratulate the United States on their win and the very high standard of golf they have played this week.
“We have played good golf in spells, particularly on the first day, but at this level you have to have more consistency and at times we’ve just not performed as well as we would have liked.
“We have a very young team and the players will have learned lots from this experience which will stand them in good stead for the future. They have given it their all this in this match and I’m very proud of them.”
Virginia Derby Grimes, Captain, United States “It’s a great feeling and of course I've never been on a losing side as a player either. It's good to see the team get to experience that winning feeling.
“Last night we just talked a little bit and I just told them to enjoy the moment and be patient on the greens. The whole week has been phenomenal and I can't say any one moment has stood out. There have been so many great moments.”

QUOTES

Elaine Farquharson-Black, Captain, Great Britain and Ireland
“We definitely played better in the morning than we played in the afternoon. Olivia and Sophie played great golf but in the second match we were doing all right before losing five holes on the spin and then it got really ragged. You can’t get any momentum and they were always fighting it.
“I was disappointed because we didn't play to our own high standards and we didn't really put any pressure on the Americans in the second two matches.
“We can still do it. Every single one of them can beat every single one of the Americans. We've got to believe that and we've got to go out fighting.”
Olivia Mehaffey, Great Britain and Ireland
“We played really well this afternoon. We played two amazing players so feels pretty good to get the win right now. Obviously, it's a little disappointing how the team has done but everyone will be pumped up tomorrow. We’ve got nothing to lose, we've got to go out all guns blazing and hopefully we can get a couple points on the board.”

USA builds commanding 9-3 lead, just 1.5pts away

 from reclaiming Curtis Cup

USGA NEWS RELEASE
The USA team appears on the verge of reclaiming the Curtis Cup from Great Britain and Ireland.
After earning five of the available six points to grab a 9-3 lead on Saturday – including a sweep of the three morning four-ball encounters, captain Virginia Derby Grimes’ charges need just 1½ of the available eight points in Sunday’s singles to return the cup to American soil after a three-point defeat in 2016 at Dun Laoghaire, Ireland.
Kristen Gillman, 20, of Austin, Texas, the 2014 U.S. Women’s Amateur champion and a rising junior at the University of Alabama, improved to 4-0-0 in the three-day biennial competition, winning her morning four-ball match with reigning NCAA individual champion Jennifer Kupcho, 3 and 2, and her afternoon foursomes match with Alabama teammate Lauren Stephenson, 6 and 5.
Gillman has a chance to match American Stacy Lewis (2008) and England’s Bronte Law (2016) by going 5-0-0 in a single Match since the format was changed to three days a decade ago.
“Today was a really great day,” said Stephenson. “Probably even better than we expected. Every single person played really well from morning to afternoon. We all fought really hard and it's really fun to be able to be so excited for each other.”

Despite making just two birdies over 13 holes, Lucy Li, 15, of Redwood Shores, Calif., and reigning U.S. Women’s Amateur champion Sophia Schubert, 22, of Oak Ridge, Tenn., still managed to post a 7-and-5 victory over Paul Grant and Shannon McWilliam in the afternoon foursomes session. Li and Schubert won a hole with a bogey and another with a double bogey.
The lone bright spot for GB and I came from the tandem of Olivia Mehaffey, 20, of Northern Ireland, and Sophie Lamb, 20, of England. The duo registered their second foursomes victory of the competition, defeating Kupcho, the No. 2 player in the World Amateur Golf Ranking™, and world No. 1 Lilia Vu, 2 and 1.
Mehaffey is one of two returning players from the victorious 2016 team and the side’s highest-ranked golfer in the WAGR (No. 16), while Lamb was the low amateur in last year’s Women’s British Open.
Kupcho and Vu only managed one birdie, which came on the par-5 first hole, and it was matched by Mehaffey and Lamb. The GB and I duo won the second hole with a conceded birdie and never looked back, building as much as a 3-hole lead. The two sides halved the final holes of the match.
“I love games where your opponents are really coming at you and the golf is really good,” said Mehaffey. “It comes down to those putts and it comes down to those moments, and it’s the reason you practise. I love matches that are high quality and that was definitely a high-quality match.”
NOTABLE
  • This was the first USA sweep in a four-ball session since 2010 when the Americans swept the entire day en route to a 12.5-7.5 victory at Essex County Club.
  • GB and I’s Olivia Mehaffey and Sophie Lamb became just the second tandem to play all four sessions together since the format was changed to a three-day event in 2008. Georgia Hall and Stephanie Meadow played all four sessions in 2014 at St. Louis (Missouri) Country Club for GB and I.
  • The USA has a chance to register the most points in the three-day Curtis Cup era. The USA totalled 13 points in 2008, the first year the Curtis Cup went to three days, and again in 2014. It registered 12.5 points in 2010.
QUOTABLE
Olivia Mehaffey on the disappointment of being down by six points, but producing 2.5 points with Sophie Lamb:
“Elaine (Farquharson-Black) told us to go out and take care of our point, and Sophie and I took care of our point, and there’s not much more we could have done but win [Saturday] morning, as well. We played really well this afternoon. We played two amazing players (Kupcho and Vu), and it feels pretty good to get the win right now. Obviously, it’s a little disappointing in how the team has done, but I’m sure everyone will be pumped up [on Sunday].”
USA captain Virginia Derby Grimes on the message she gave her team: “I just keep reminding them: stay focused, one shot at a time, stay in the moment and be patient on the greens. Out here that is what it is all about … We’re going to stay motivated. It’s not over until it’s over. Just go out there and play their games and enjoy the walk. It’s the same message. We’re not going to change anything.”
Grimes on how 15-year-old Lucy Li has fit in with the seven college players: “We brought in two junior players (Rachel Heck was the other at a practice session) and I thought it was great because it gave me a chance to see how those players mixed with the college players. And I got a lot out of that session. [Sophia Schubert] and her have been practicing this [foursomes] format a lot together. Those pairings really came together a month ago when we were here. They just blended together. They just fit each other.”
Andrea Lee on the enjoyment she had playing with Li in winning Saturday’s four-ball match: “We had a lot of fun out there, got our handshake down and everything, and we were just laughing and joking and keeping each other really light and positive on the golf course. It was just really fun.”
WHAT'S NEXT?
Sunday's final round of play will feature eight singles matches. The USA Team needs 1.5 points to win the Match, while the GB and I team needs seven points to be assured of retaining the Curtis Cup

USA extend Curtis Cup lead to 7-2 over GB and I

Americans are simply out-putting GB and I on Tillinghast's quirky greens

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
The United States are odds-on favourites to win back the Curtis Cup after winning Day 2's morning four-ball session 3-0 which extended their overall lead from 4-2 at the end play yesterday evening to 7-2 with the afternoon foursomes to come today before Sunday's closing session of eight singles.
With 20pt at stake over the three-day match,  the USA have to reach 10.5pt to be in a "defeat impossible" position.
Designer Tillinghast's quirky greens - no straight putts on undulating surfaces that twist this way and then that way - have made this biennial match a putting contest … and the Americans are clearly out-putting the GB and I players.
In this morning's session, USA notched 12 birdies to only four by the GB and I team.
+Several years ago after Great Britain and Ireland had lost yet another Ryder Cup match to USA, no less a person than Jack Nicklaus suggested that a "European" team would be a much stronger one than a GB and I only line-up and would, consequently, provide much worthier opposition.
His suggestion was accepted - and he was right.
I will not be very popular when I say that perhaps it is time for the Curtis Cup match to feature Team Europe rather than GB and I against the USA.
