SCOTTISH GOLF NEWS RELEASE
By ED HODGE
Drumpellier’s Steven Rennie was the hero as Lanarkshire lifted the GolfKings Scottish Men’s Area Team Championship title at Dalmahoy for the first time since 1998.
Rennie held his nerve in the final match on the final green as the six-man Lanarkshire side defeated home outfit Lothians to secure just their third Area Team triumph, edging a closely-fought final
5 – 4 following three foursomes and six singles matches.
After losing the 2014 final to Renfrewshire, there was capital joy this time for Rennie, Craig Ross, Ed Wood, Dominic Dougan, Kenneth Gallacher and Gordon Yates at Dalmahoy Hotel and  Country Club just outside Edinburgh.
Having taken the lunchtime lead on Dalmahoy’s East Course, thanks to a 2 – 1 victory in the foursomes, Willie Sharpe’s Lanarkshire men eased further clear with singles wins from Ross, the reigning South African Amateur champion, and Wood.
But the Lothians, seeking their first title since 2007, hit back with victories from Scottish Boys champion Eric McIntosh, Broomieknowe’s Lee Morgan and Euan McIntosh, the new Scottish Golf Men’s Order of Merit winner, to level matters.
That meant all eyes turned to Rennie’s clash with Jordyn Rhind, attached to Kingsfield. Rennie’s birdie from 15 feet at the 16th gave him a two-hole cushion, but his bogey at the par-3 17th provided Rhind with hope. Rennie, however, stood firm to half the last and spark the celebrations.
“This is pretty special,” said Rennie, 36. “It was a wee bit nerve wracking coming down 18 but I got the job done. We’ve got an excellent mix of youth and experience. Kenny is 53 and played in the Senior British Open a few years ago, Craig Ross is excellent and Gordon is a previous internationalist who has come back to the amateur game.
“I didn’t realise this is only the third time we have won this event. I was in the team that lost two years ago, so it’s excellent to finally do it.”
A delighted Sharpe said of his side: “We have a fantastic team and I knew we had a good chance. When you have five or six plus handicap players in your team, you expect to do well. It was great to get to the final and I’m so pleased now. I’m really proud of them all.”
For the Lothians, it was a disappointing end after they led the strokeplay qualifying on Friday, but Turnhouse’s McIntosh admitted the better team won.
“We came up just short,” said the 47-year-old, who has enjoyed a superb year back in the amateur ranks. “It was a good final and they just played that bit better. They are deserved winners.
“I think winning the foursomes in the morning is really important, it made it that bit easier for them in the afternoon. I think we did really well, led the qualifying which was fantastic and all the guys played their hearts out. Anything could have happened on the last, but Steven showed a lot of bottle to see it out for Lanarkshire.”

Duncan Stewart, Peter Whiteford finish in top

10 at Challenge Tour event in France

FROM CHALLENGE TOUR WEBSITE
Alvaro Velasco staged a dramatic final day comeback to win the Cordon Golf Open, shooting an incredible eight under par 62 to seal a one-shot victory at Golf Blue Green de Pléneuf Val André.
The Spaniard started his fourth round eight shots behind leader Alexander Knappe, but an outstanding back nine – which started with five birdies and an eagle in seven holes – coupled with the German’s struggles gave Velasco a three-shot lead coming down the last.
The 35 year old bogeyed the last but set the clubhouse target on 12 under par before back-to-back birdies for Knappe left him needing a birdie on 18 to force a play-off – but his long effort came up short, giving Velasco a third career European Challenge Tour victory.
Knappe could be consoled by moving up to third place in the Road to Oman Rankings – which Jordan Smith now tops again after his fourth place finish in Brittany made him the first player to top 100,000 points this season – but the day belonged to a delighted Velasco, back in the winner’s circle for the first time in six years.
“It’s hard to describe at the moment, but I’m so happy,” he said. “It’s unbelievable, and today was amazing, I’m thrilled.
“Everything changes now for me. This year for me so far has been quite bad, my game hasn’t been very sharp, but this week I found something and a win here is huge for me, so I’m really excited for what comes next now.
“Six years it’s been, since Kazakhstan and La Gomera, and it’s been tough. I’ve been working a lot, not really playing too much, but hopefully it starts coming now – it’s been a long wait but it feels great.
“I don’t know how I did it today. I just tried to do my best, and I started to realise how well I was doing so I just kept going – it’s an unbelievable round, 62, and I couldn’t wish any better.
“My playing partners were probably quite shocked at a couple of the putts – I had some nice breaks, so they were looking at me when I made a couple of long putts and saying, ‘it’s going to be your day,’ and it really was.
“The end was a bit nervous, but there was nothing I could do. I was happy with my score and the way I performed and it was all about waiting and seeing what happened – I would have been happy with this week anyway, whatever happened, but to win is even more special.”
Knappe’s playing partner Oscar Stark birdied 18 to join him in second place on 11 under par, with Smith two shots further back ahead of leading Frenchman Antoine Schwartz and Scot Duncan Stewart on eight under par.
Stewart earned 9,000 euros for rounds of 71,65, 68 and 68 for a T5 finish on 272.
Peter Whiteford was a second Scot in the top 10. He shot 67, 65, 73 and 68 for a T7 placing on 273, earned 6,000 euros.

Swede Noren beats Aussie Hend in play-off for

European Masters in Switzerland

NEWS RELEASE
Crans Montana, Switzerland: Alex Noren of Sweden holed a 30ft birdie putt on the first play-off hole to defeat a battling Scott Hend of Australia and win the Omega European Masters for the second time in his career.
Noren, who won the Swiss showpiece in 2009, returned with a five-under-par 65 to end his campaign tied on 17-under-par 263 alongside Hend (66) as they returned to the 18th hole for extra time at the Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club.
Victory did not come easy for the Swede who had to hold off the strong challenge from overnight leader Hend, who played solid golf except for two poor tee shots on the 18th hole where he saved par.
The amiable Andrew Johnston of England carded a 65 to finish on 266, three shots from joining the play-off while Lee Westwood finished in fourth position following a 63 at the €2.7 million (approximately US$3 million) event sanctioned by the Asian Tour and European Tour.
Li Hao-tong of China fired a 69 to take a share of 18th place and finish as the highest placed Asian at the Omega European Masters.
The 2016 season could not get any better for Noren, who welcomed a baby girl in February and was victorious at the Scottish Open in July. With his win, the Swede is now the only player after the late Seve Ballesteros of Spain and Thomas Bjorn of Denmark to win two Omega European Masters title.
“It sounds unbelievable. I’m coming off a three-week vacation and trying to get the game in shape and it got into shape quite quickly so it is fantastic. There were tough guys hunting me today but I’m happy I won,” said Noren, now a six-time winner in Europe.
The 34-year-old Noren offset Hend’s overnight one-shot lead with an opening birdie and enjoyed a two-shot advantage when he holed four straight birdies before the turn.
His lead was reduced to one as a fast-charging Hend birdied 15 and it was all squared when Noren three-putted 17 for his second bogey of the day.
“It was howling off the mat (18th hole) and you need to hit a big hook. I got lucky pulling that off (twice) but the other guys didn’t. I’ve never won coming from behind or won in a play-off on the European Tour so that makes it more amazing,” said Noren.
Hend, a nine-time Asian Tour winner, was disappointed to settle for second place after hitting two poor tee shots on the 18th hole into the trees.
“He (Alex) played fantastic golf today but I didn’t play quite well enough. That’s golf. You can’t complain when you get into position to win but somebody makes a great birdie on the play-off hole to win,” said Hend, a nine-time Asian Tour winner.
“I think Alex played the 18th hole way better than I did and made an awesome birdie for a deserving win. It wasn’t a daunting tee shot on the last. It is just like any other tee shot. You just need to stand there and hit it. I was unable to hit the shot I wanted yesterday and today, twice,” he lamented.
David Drysdale, who finished T12 on 271, earned 40,905 euros.

Nigg Bay win Dalswinton Trophy for first time

Nigg Bay team members: Zac Wood Lee O'Connor and Gary Stewart. The fourth member of the winning team, Tyler Ogston, did not think that Nigg Bay were going to win, so he left the clubhouse early. That is why Tyler is not in the picture.

Nigg Bay Golf Club have won the Deeside Golf Club's Dalswinton Trophy inter-club double foursomes tournament at the Bieldside course for the first time.
Zach Wood, Tyler Ogston, Gary Stewart and Lee O'Connor combined for a 36-hole total of 297, made up of 153 in the first round and 144 in the second.
The men from Balnagask won by a single shot from Royal Aberdeen's Mark Halliday, Nick and Donald Macandrew, and Daniel Sim who had round totals of 152 and 146.
McDonald Ellon, Newmachar and Murcar Links tied for third place on 304.
Lewis Shand (Portlethen) had a hole in one at the 14th in the first round as he and his partner Jack Douglas went round in 67, matching the course record. To do it in alternate-shot play was a very fine effort.

Never mind that they took 81 shots to get round in the afternoon!
