"Old" heads could be in the mix as Scottish championship progresses at testing Balgownie

FROM THE SCOTTISH GOLF WEBSITE
In an era of amateur golf when a number of young players take the pro plunge early, an experienced core are enjoying a successful spell in 2016 and could well be in the mix come the week’s conclusion to the Scottish men's amateur championship at Royal Aberdeen Golf's renowned Balgownie links.
As Robert MacIntyre, aged only 19, stayed on course to defend his title after the left-hander survived a first-round scare, the likes of Kilmacolm’s Matthew Clark illustrated that an older head could prove key over a tricky test that places a premium on accuracy.
Clark is 34 and juggles his golf whilst working as a bank manager at TSB in Inverurie, as well as family life with two young children. It hasn’t stopped him earning a fifth straight Home Internationals cap for Scotland next month, with former pros Barry Hume, also 34, and Euan McIntosh, 47, to join him at Nairn. His form continued at Royal Aberdeen, progressing to round two with a 3 and 1 success over Linlithgow’s Edward Shannly.
Clark, pictured by Cal Carson Golf Agency, bidding to go past the fifth round for the first time this week, said: “There are a lot of good players; it’s a stronger field than it has been. There are a lot of names that are beginning to come through, as well as more experienced players here.
“The obvious two contenders are Connor Syme (aged 21) and Robert, given their seasons, but Barry will be handy round here, Craig Howie is playing great, and the likes of Euan and myself could get it going.
“My hat goes off to Euan. I think what he has done this year is nothing short of remarkable for someone to come back into the game, after pretty much 10 years out, and show a level of consistency at Scottish Golf level.”
Another experienced figure, albeit in his late 20s but also juggling golf, work and a young family, is Glenbervie’s Graeme Robertson. The former GB and I cap won the Craigmillar Park Open earlier this season and is making a bid for another Home Internationals berth, with the final two team places finalised post-events at Royal Aberdeen.
The 2014 Scottish Amateur runner-up at Downfield said: “I think I’m playing better than two years’ ago. I don’t practise as much as I used to, but I play a couple of times a week. This is my seventh Scottish Amateur and I guess I do feel a little under the radar.”
MacIntyre, meanwhile, had to dig deep to begin his defence on a pleasant, calm weather day. With few surprise results in round one – Inverness’s Rory Franssen perhaps the only notable casualty – the Glencruitten player was up against it when he was bunkered at the 18th in his match against Harburn’s Christopher Curran. But MacIntyre produced a brilliant recovery, splashing out from 40 yards to close range to secure a two-hole win.
“I was four up after seven holes and eventually hung on,” said the runner-up in The Amateur Championship a few weeks ago. “Chris is a good player and it was good to get a tough match early doors.”
Another talented teenager, Nairn’s Sandy Scott, also reached round two, joined by reigning Scottish boys' champion Eric McIntosh (Bruntsfield Links).
Late in the day, Craig Ross led a number of leading names to seal spots in round three. Ross, drawing on his match-play success in South Africa at the start of the year, eased past Hazlehead’s Greg Ingram 4 and 3.
With the second round ties beginning late on Tuesday after the first round was completed, the Kirkhill player was joined in round three by Hume (Haggs Castle) and Syme (Drumoig). Syme, perhaps as expected, was made to fight all the way before seeing off Lawrence Allan from Alva on the 18th.
The hopes of one local player, Michael Lawrie (Deeside), were ended in a 2 and 1 defeat by Liberton’s Kieran Cantley.
The second round and third round ties are completed on Wednesday.

Scottish Golf explains decision not to pick

champion Ailsa for Home Internationals

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Carnoustie's Ailsa Summers, winner of the Scottish women's amateur championship at West Kilbride last month, has not been included in the Scotland team of seven for the Women's Home Internationals at Conwy Golf Club, North Wales next week.
It is the first time in living memory that a Scottish champion, when available, has not been selected for the internationals.
Ailsa, a graduate of St Andrews University, works at Edinburgh Airport.
"I was available to play in the Home Internationals but I was not selected," she said.
"I don't think there is anything I can say at this point which wouldn't offend someone and I don't think it would help in any case.
"All I can say is that I have a lot of respect for all the girls who made the women's team and wish them all the very best."
Summers won the Angus women's county championship five times in a row from 2009 to 2013.
Ironically, there are two other Angus county players in the Scotland team announced today (Tuesday) - Summers' clubmate Jess Meek (Carnoustie Ladies) and Heather Munro (Monifieth)
Angus county captain Angela Campbell commented:

"I am delighted for the girls who have been selected for the Scottish team, but I am surprised and disappointed for Ailsa, as reigning Scottish champion, that she has not been selected."
Later "Scottish Golf" issued a statement, explaining why Summers was not chosen.
Steve Paulding, Scottish Golf Performance Director, said: “Ailsa Summers was available for selection for the Ladies’ Home Internationals.
“Winning the Scottish Women’s Amateur was a great achievement for her, but it does not guarantee team selection.

“Due to Ailsa's work commitments she has not played a great deal of competitive rounds this season and other players have a better overall performance record.”

The team was selected by Steve Paulding, Clare Queen (Programme Coordinator) and Rick Valentine (National Women’s Competition Coach).
Due to work commitments at Edinburgh Airport, Summers was not available to play for Scotland in the European team championships at the beginning of this month.
It has been suggested to me by a past Scotland team captain that Ailsa's unavailability for that tournament irked the powers that be in "Scottish Golf" and influenced the decision not to choose her for the Home Internationals.
I don't believe that because nobody could be that petty at the cost of not fielding the strongest line-up available, could they?
Ailsa Summers is a true blue amateur. She works for a living. She will never turn professional. That does not fit in well with those who want leading amateurs to be full-timers on their way to the pro ranks.
In my opinion, the Scottish women's amateur championship has been downgraded at a stroke by the selectors' failure to pick the champion of Scotland.
Down through the years, winning the Scottish title has opened doors for the champion. In Ailsa Summers' case, it closed one in her face.
For the first time, the Ladies Golf Union are staging the women's and the girls' internationals at the same venue and on the same dates - August 3 to 5.  The number of players per team at both levels has been reduced from eight to seven.
The Scotland teams will be:
WOMEN
Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm)
Chloe Goadby (St Regulus)
Connie Jaffrey (Troon Ladies)
Jess Meek (Carnoustie Ladies)
Heather Munro (Monifieth)
Hannah McCook (Grantown on Spey)
Clara Young (North Berwick)

GIRLS

Louise Duncan (West Kilbride)
Jillian Farrell (Cardross)
Joanne Free (Gullane Ladies)
Hazel MacGarvie (Troon Ladies)
Jasmine Mackintosh (Hazlehead)
Shannon McWilliam (Aboyne)
Jennifer Rankine (Haggs Castle

What's happening in Scottish Golf?
 FROM MARY RICHARDSON
Love to hear from Scottish Golf just what is going on. Downgrading women's and girls' tournaments, changing conditions after entry, making young girls play 36 holes in sweltering heat, putting up entry fees whilst removing prize vouchers, removing live scoring, not even turning up to present the prizes, leaving your champion (and runner-up) out of Home Internationals team which downgrades the importance of our championships even more, devaluing county golf and volunteers ............ Total disrespect for women's golf.
And yes, before you say anything, I was part of the amalgamation working group. But we all have our regrets in life!

FROM STUART MACTAGGART
Totally agree with the comment that the Scottish women's amateur championship has been downgraded at a stroke by the selectors' failure to pick the champion for the forthcoming Home Internationals.
Only one of the last four standing at the "Scottish" has been picked.
Quite out of the ordinary!
I am sure this will provoke plenty of discussion over the coming weeks, starting at the Mackie Bowl on Sunday at Gullane!

Ross Cameron leads four Scots qualifiers at

Polish Open

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Four Scots made the cut in the Polish Open but two others were eliminated at the German PGA Development Tour's Polish Open championship at Sierra Golf Club, Wejherowo.
Ross Cameron (Saltire Energy) from Ellon qualified in a share of 10th place with scores of 70 and 71 for three-under 141 - six shots behind the German leader, Sascha Schmidt (68-67 for nine-under 135).
Portlethen's Sam Kiloh (Paul Lawrie GC) shot 69-73 for 142 and a share of 16th place.
Kevin Duncan from Ellon made it through in joint 31st place on 145 (75-70) - one ahead of former Scottish amateur champion Alexander Culverwell (Dunbar) who made it on the limit mark of 146 (73-73).
Another former Scottish amateur champion, Banchory's Chris Robb (Meldrum House) continues to be out of touch with his best form. He had scores of 71 and 76 for 147.
Peterhead's Philip McLean (76-73) failed on 149.
