PEDRO LENCART SILVA WINS JUNIOR OPEN at KILMARNOCK BARASSIE

NEWS RELEASE
Pedro Lencart Silva posted a round of six-under-par 67 to seal a convincing win at the Junior Open at Kilmarnock (Barassie) Golf Club today.
The 16 year-old from Portugal started the round two strokes behind Valeria Pacheco (Puerto Rico) but produced a fine performance in the final round to lift the title with an aggregate score of 214, five-under-par.
Pacheco made a slow start to her round and eventually signed for a one-over-par 74 to finish second on level par 219, one ahead of China’s Yifan Ji (72) who was the overnight leader after the first day.
South Korea’s Hyunkyung Park (75) was fourth on two-over 221, one ahead of American Garrett Barber (74) and Argentina’s Mateo Fernandez De Oliveira (75) in a tie for fifth.
The leading group took to the course during excellent conditions and a birdie on the first hole by Lencart Silva set the tone for the day.  The Miramar golf club member added another birdie at the fifth to reach the turn on two-under-par.
A run of four birdies in five holes from the 12th was the difference in the end as at one stage Lencart Silva and Pacheco were only separated by one shot.
However, Lencart Silva played his best golf of the week by hitting 17 greens in regulation and converting his birdie opportunities to leave others with little chance of catching him.
The Junior Open title is Lencart Silva’s biggest win to date after he won the Finland Under-16 Championship last year.
Key Quotes:
Pedro Lencart Silva:
“I played really well, hit 17 greens and made six birdies without any dropped shots. It was a really good round. I felt some nerves but I was trying to enjoy myself at the same time.
“I practised a lot of links shots into the wind before I came here. It’s a very important win for me, my biggest so far. I didn’t have great form coming into the week but I tried to focus and luckily my game together at the right time.
“I suppose it’s a Portuguese double! It’s perfect. Nobody really expected Portugal to win in the football and I’m not sure if anyone thought I could win here but we did it.”
Valeria Pacheco:
“I still feel good even though I didn’t manage to win. It was a good result, especially with the way I started, which was a little crazy. I’m proud of the way I was able to come back and finished pretty well.

“To finish second is a good result. Pedro’s score in the final round was sensational. There are some things you simply can’t do anything about. I have no complaints, Pedro deserved to win. Overall it was a great week, I had a lot of fun. It was an amazing experience.”
Duncan Weir, Executive Director – Working for Golf, The R&A
“It has been a fabulous week and a great conclusion. We had 80 countries represented in the starting field of 143, a record entry. The transformation from the last time the Junior Open was played here at Kilmarnock (Barassie) in 2004 is clear to see; it’s bigger, better and stronger. In my experience, it’s the best Junior Open we’ve ever had.
“For the development of the game the Junior Open does two things. At the top end of the field it allows good young players an opportunity to compete against one another at a venue very close to The Open. It also enables us to connect with some of our smaller countries; it strengthens our link with all the national organisations affiliated with The RandA. The Junior Open is a combination of a successful championship and real golf development.”

CORT AND MARSHALL SET FOR JUDGMENT DAY
Room-mates share the lead with one round to play
at Carrick on Loch Lomond

SUMMARY BY NICK TEALE
Room-mates Matthew Cort and Andrew Marshall share a one-shot lead on five under par heading into the final round of the HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour’s Motocaddy Masters at The Carrick on Loch Lomond.
Both have carded rounds of 69 and 68 so far on the stunning par-71 course and will tee it up together in Thursday’s final round. Cort (Beedles Lake Golf Club) will be hunting his second EuroPro win of the season while Marshall (Bawburgh Golf Club) was a winner on the tour at Hawkstone Park last summer.
Both have an abundance of experience and played on the European Tour at the same time in the 2000s but Marshall knows he is up against an in-form friend as he vies for the £10,000 winner’s cheque.
“Matt and I are rooming together funnily enough, so it will be interesting tomorrow” said Marshall. “We haven’t roomed together for a while. Tomorrow will be a lot of fun.
“We both have a lot of experience. He did well here last year, I didn’t but I do like the course. The weather plays a factor because it can bring a lot of trouble into play.
“Matt had the tougher half of the draw and he had a win a couple of weeks ago in windy weather, so I would expect him to do quite well tomorrow. I have been struggling of late but hopefully it is coming back. He is playing well, he is the man in form at the moment.”
Cort won the Dawson and Sanderson Classic at Longhirst Hall two weeks ago and success at The Carrick would propel him to the top of the all-important Race To Desert Springs, from which the top five at the end of the season earn Challenge Tour exemptions for 2017.
Ben Hall (Cento Group) is third on four under par, just one behind the leading duo, while Sandeep Grewal and Mark Young (Clitheroe) are two off the pace.
A cut to the leading 50 players and ties has now been made with all those four-over-par 146 or better advancing to Thursday’s final round.
Spectator entry is free of charge and live scoring can be found at www.europrotour.com. Highlights of the Motocaddy Masters will air on Sky Sports on Tuesday, July 26.

Scottish Golf News Release:

Red-Hot Roger Lands Scottish Youths Crown

Cruden Bay’s Stephen Roger credited his recent experience in Men’s golf after claiming his biggest title to date with victory in the Scottish Youths Open Championship at the Fairmont St Andrews.

The 18-year-old led a Scotland one-two over an international field, triumphing by three strokes from Rory Franssen (Inverness).

Over the Kittocks Course at the renowned Fife venue, Roger built on his two-shot lead after round two by adding closing scores of 70 and 68 for a fine eight-under-par total over 72 holes.

The north-east player fired six birdies and just two dropped shots over the final 36 holes to see off the challenge of European Boys player Franssen, who finished on five under.

“I played really solidly out there,” said Roger, a former North East Boys and Junior Jug champion. “Rory was absolute quality on the back nine but I held on down the stretch.

“I’ve been playing well recently, seventh in the East of Scotland Open and tied fifth at the Cameron Corbett Vase, both Men’s Order of Merit events. My game has been good for a while and came together even more this week.

“This is my biggest win by far. I was fifth on the Boys Order of Merit last year, but I’ve never won anything on this kind of scale to be honest. It was great to prove my game is at a good level. I’ve been playing full-time since I left school and my game has come on a lot, especially from learning in Men’s events the last few weeks as the standard is really good.”

The English pair of James Rooney and Christopher Handy shared third spot on three under par, with Lanark’s Andrew Thomson the next best Scot a shot further back. First-round leader Jamie Stewart finished in a five-way tie for sixth on one over.

Matthew Dalrymple wins West of Scotland

boys' title after classic final

Matthew Dalrymple of Old Ranfurly Golf Club is the 2016 West of Scotland boys' match-play champion.
In an excellent final at Mount Ellen Golf Club, Matthew, pictured, defeated Jack McMorris of East Kilbride by 2 and 1. However the score fails to reveal the true excitement of this match and the final drama. Matthew started on fire with four birdies in the first six holes to be five up and coasting. However Jack rallied with three birdies of his own and stood on the 14th tee only one down and game on.
Jack pushed his drive about forty yards short and right of the green but left hander Matthew rose to the challenge and boomed his drive on to the green to make an easy birdie. The hole measures 311 yards!
This put Matthew two up with four to play and they halved in to give Matthew victory.
Dalrymple is 17 years old and is heading to King University in Bristol,  Tennessee to embark on a four-year golf scholarship.
Jack, also 17, is having a gap year and hoping to follow a similar golf scholarship in America next year. Both boys are playing next week in Scottish boys' stroke-play at Lanark GC next week.
