Gunn shoots out the lights in Gateway Tour

event, 24 under par for 54 holes

Dornoch exile Jimmy Gunn this week won the Gateway Tour's Q School Prep Classic at Southern Dunes Golf Club near Phoenix, Arizona.
Gunn produced some of the lowest scoring of his career, finishing 24 under par for the 54-hole event with rounds of 68, 63 and 61 for 192 to win by $6,000 first prize by five strokes.
Gunn's third round was a course record with halves of 29-32. On the outward half he birdied seven holes in succession, from the second to the eighth.  After the turn he had further birdies at the 10th and 13th and an eagle 2 at the 14th.
In that round he had only 26 putts.
The Highlander also reduced the Southern Dunes inward half to 29 shots in his second round.
Over the 54 holes he had one bogey,  the 16th in his first round.

Delpodio delights home fans at Challenge Open

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Italy’s Matteo Delpodio refused to be blown off course as he opened up a commanding four shot lead at his home event, the EMC Challenge Open, with the second round still to be completed following rain delays on the first day.
The 30 year old was the only player to break 70 in the first round at Rome’s Olgiata Golf Club as waterlogged greens postponed its completion until day two, and he followed it up with an outstanding three under par round of 68, finishing birdie-birdie, to sit on five under par.
Turin-born Delpodio spent the 2013 season on The European Tour but has struggled on the Challenge Tour this season, his best result a tied 22nd place in the Kӓrnten Golf Open presented by Mazda, but he believes his game is good enough to contend this week.
“I had a very good day,” he said. “The weather out there is tough and the course is tough, so everything had to be right in your game to play well.
“I’m very happy. I haven’t had a great season until now, even though I’ve felt I was playing well in the last few months, so I’m happy about this score and I just want to keep this freedom and concentration going.
“I managed to keep my focus going through this afternoon because I was playing well and I didn’t have to go looking for balls in the forest or anything, so I had a bit more mental energy to attack some pins.
“On the one hand it helped playing both rounds back-to-back in staying in the same form, on the other you get more tired playing this much in one day.
“The finish I had comes from the quality of my round. When you play well you find more energy, and on the 17th I hit two great golf shots into the green, two putts for birdie, then on 18 I was in the rough but was lucky, and put a wedge to about one metre for birdie.
“I knew I was up there on the leaderboard but I didn’t check the numbers because I never check the numbers – we are not playing numbers, we are playing our best golf - that is my philosophy.
“To win in Italy would be a dream. I’ve never won here, even when I was on the Alps Tour, so that would be really special, but we’ll see on Sunday.”
After the delayed first round was completed, Finland’s Antti Ahokas, Spaniard Borja Virto Astudillo and England’s William Harrold were the only players other than Delpodio under par as scoring proved difficult on a long and testing course.
The delays meant that the completion of round two was also postponed until the third morning, though of those already in the clubhouse there were notable rounds from Stuart Manley, whose 68 left him on one under par, and Ricardo Gouveia.
The Portuguese, who lost his number one spot in the Road to Oman Rankings after Sebastien Gros’ victory at the Kazakhstan Open, is also on one under par after a second round of 69.
With half the field still out on the course as light faded, the second round will resume at 7.50am on Saturday.

Mullen and Wall lead at halfway in Dunhill

NEWS RELEASE
ST ANDREWS – England’s Jimmy Mullen, one of the great future hopes of European golf, resolutely clung to the top of the leaderboard after the second round of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in St Andrews today.
If anyone was expecting 21-year-old Mullen to fold, after his excellent first round 64 at Kingsbarns, they did not understand the fighting spirit and maturity of the young man.
Mullen, playing in his first European Tour event as a professional, shot an impressive 69 on the Old Course, though he was joined on 11-under-par, late in the day, by fellow Englishman Anthony Wall.
One shot further back is another brilliant young prospect, Ireland’s Paul Dunne, experienced Ryder Cup star Jamie Donaldson, Denmark’s Thorbjorn Olesen and American Chris Stroud.
Mullen, who won all four of his matches during Great Britain and Ireland’s Walker Cup victory over the United States, said: “I watched these players when I was a junior, and then you realise you are playing against them now. That’s the hardest part. I'm still a bit like ‘there’s  Kaymer’ and other people like him.
“I’m just trying to let them do what they do and concentrate on what I do. I think I managed to stick to that quite well over the first two rounds. I got a little bit twitchy and tried lagging a few putts up on the back nine, but I'm happy with my day's work.
“It's unbelievable, really, in my first event as a pro. It’s the stuff dreams are made of. I’m trying not to get too far ahead of myself. We're only halfway, but let’s see what we can do over the next couple days.”
Anthony Wall, who had four birdies on the front nine at St Andrews, his back nine having started at the 10th, in his 68, is looking forward to playing Carnoustie in the third round. “I love Carnoustie. I think it's one of the best links ever made, if not the best. I've always played well around there and I look forward to another good day.”
Mullen’s superb performance has also lifted him and his amateur partner Miguel Duenas into third place in the Team Championship on 18-under, one shot behind leaders Rafael Cabrera Bello and Dermot Desmond, and Jared Harvey and Michael Zamkow.
The tournament, conceived as a celebration of links golf, is played over three of the world’s best known and respected links courses - the Old Course at St Andrews, the Championship Course at Carnoustie and the highly regarded Kingsbarns Golf Links.
With a prize fund of US$5 million, the championship incorporates two separate competitions - an individual professional tournament for the world's leading golfers and a team event in which the professionals are paired with some of the most celebrated amateur golfers which creates a unique atmosphere.
