Champions selected for England senior campaign
Three champions are among the players selected for the England senior men’s campaign for international team honours.
Surrey’s Ian Attoe, the English senior champion, and Kent’s Richard Partridge, the Scottish and Irish titleholder, will represent England in the European senior men’s team championship at Pravets, Bulgaria, from 1-5 September.
They’ll be joined in the team by Stephen East of Yorkshire, Alan Mew of Hampshire, David Niven of Berkshire, and Mark Stones of Essex.
All six players, together with double European senior champion, Clive Jones, have also been selected for the Senior Men’s Home Internationals. The championship will be played on home ground at Crowborough Beacon in Sussex from 15-17 September.
The England team has twice won the European title, in 2009 and 2010, and has had six Home International successes, most recently in 2012 and ’13.
The players:
Ian Attoe (Worplesdon) won the English senior championship at his home club and was also runner-up in the Scottish seniors and has had top ten finishes in the Welsh and Irish events. (Image © Leaderboard Photography)
Stephen East (Moortown) topped the 2014 England senior order of merit at the end of his first senior season. He has followed up this year by winning the Portuguese title and tying second in the European seniors. He was also third in the English mid-amateur.
Clive Jones (Toulouse), who is based in France, has won the European senior championship in both 2014 and 2015
Alan Mew (Stoneham) was third in the Welsh seniors and tied fourth in the Senior Amateur championship. He also had high finishes in the Irish and Scottish championships.
David Niven (Newbury and Crookham) also shared fourth place in the Senior Amateur and tied third in the English senior championship.
Richard Partridge (Wildernesse) has won both the Irish and Scottish senior championships this season and was runner-up in the Welsh.
Mark Stones (Boyce Hill) has had top four finishes in the Welsh, Irish and Scottish seniors this season.
The England senior order of merit is used to select the teams with the top four players qualifying automatically for the European team and the top five for the Home Internationals. Two further players are selected for each team.

New Zealander has 10-under 62 in Challenge Tour event

Ryan Fox trots clear in Geneva

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Ryan Fox continued his remarkable form on European soil as the New Zealander marched clear at the prestigious ROLEX Trophy tournament, courtesy of a ten under par opening round 62 at Golf Club de Genève.
The son of former All Black legend Grant Fox carded no fewer than three eagles and added four birdies to that tally to move one shot clear in Geneva and continue his incredible rise on the European Challenge Tour.
The 28 year old has played four regular Challenge Tour events, winning once at Le Vaudreuil Golf Challenge in France, and claiming a top five finish as well as a top ten in two of his other three appearances.
Add a top ten in the dual-ranking Madeira Islands Open – Portugal – BPI and a tied 49th place finish in The Open Championship at St Andrews to the mix and it is easy to see why Fox entered this week’s limited-field event in Switzerland in such buoyant mood.

Scots Forrest and Ferguson fail to make it to

match-play at US amateur championship

OLYMPIA FIELDS, Illinois – Brett Coletta, 19, of Australia, posted a 36-hole total of 7-under-par 133 to win medallist honours in the weather-delayed stroke-play qualifying of the 2015 U.S. Amateur Championship at Olympia Fields Country Club.
Coletta’s 4-under-par 66 on the North Course Tuesday placed him one stroke ahead of David Oraee, of Greeley, Colo., who shot 67 on the South Course for a 134 total.
Rain delayed the start of the second round of stroke play by 90 minutes on Tuesday morning and 54 players did not complete 36 holes. Play was halted because of darkness at 7:13 p.m., and the second round of stroke play was completed on Wednesday morning.
An 18-for-10 playoff for the final match-play berths started on the South Course at 9:15 a.m.
Jake Knapp, 21, of Costa Mesa, Calif., earned the No. 3 seed in match play after a score of 65 – the lowest recorded in stroke play on the North Course – gave him a total of 135.
Lee McCoy, 21, of Athens, Ga., a 2015 United States Walker Cup Team member, shot 70 on the North Course Tuesday to place him at 4-under 136.

George Cunningham, of Tucson, Ariz., scored a hole-in-one on the 138-yard, par-3 14th hole of the South Course with a pitching wedge for the first ace in the Amateur since 2013. He shot 66 for a 137 total.

Scots Murray White and Bill Lockie in the mix after first round

Hudson and Main set pace in PGA Super-60s

championship at Caldy Golf Club

FROM THE PGA WEBSITE
There were no rock ‘n’ roll tantrums at Caldy Golf Club, Lancashire as the Gallagher brothers were in tune – well almost - in their bid for golfing glory.
This wasn’t the fiery estranged Oasis duo of Liam and Noel calling the shots but Mike and John, a pair of 60-somethings competing in the PGA Super 60s Championship.
Mike, PGA Professional at Farthingstone Hotel and Golf Course in Northampton, and elder brother John, a past captain at nearby Carden Park, were teaming up for the first time in years. No family argument keeping these apart – just the small matter of a couple hundred miles.
There was not an inkling of the sibling rivalry that haunts their more illustrious musical namesakes as they combined to be among the front runners for the title after a wet and windy opening round at the Wirral venue.
At four-under-par, aided by a rocketing start that saw them five-under after five, they sit three off the pace set by tournament stalwart John Hudson (Rivenhall Oaks) and his amateur partner Alf Main.
The golfing brothers in arms reflected on their opening salvo in the £10,000 championship, which hasn’t left them looking back in anger, well not too much.
“We went off like an express train with birdies and John getting a nett eagle on the par fifth but after that we couldn’t get anything after that and just scrambled round,” said Mike.
“It should have been a lot better. We didn’t use our shots in the end. John’s very useful and he hits it a long way for an old boy. We don’t play much and we get on well but as with all brothers it can be painful at times!”
John added: “This is the first time I’ve played with Mike in many a year. He’s staying with me and hopefully that’ll be a lucky charm.
“It’s good playing together, but there’s still that element you get with brothers – but we’re good pals.”
The early starters, which included the Gallaghers and defending champion Anglo-Scot Murray White (Centurion Club), who posted five-under-par with partner Glyn Radcliffe, benefitted from the best of the conditions and looked to be heading into day two on top.
Also on the 67 mark were Bill Lockie (Gailes Golf and Leisure) and his amateur partner Ian Wallace.
But Hudson and Main, who plays off 13, found plenty of resolve in the rain which came down with such force that the stunning views across the Dee Estuary were obliterated.
They were not alone in meeting the rain head on as debutant Brent Ellis (Filton) and 19 handicapper Geoff Anderson plus Mike McLean (Chesterfield) and his ally Jack Wheeldon came through the eye of the storm to post competitive tallies of six-under.

Leader Hudson, who was playing with Main for the first time in 25 years, said: "Considering the conditions we’re well pleased. The highlight was holing a short bunker shot at the eighth to get to one under. We birdied the next short hole (10th) and Alf used his shots his well. We finished birdie-birdie, which ended off a nice round.
“Alf didn’t need a lot of coaching around, he hit the ball nicely and played it steady. We played the difficult holes well and that made a difference.”
A tight-knit leaderboard sees just four shots separating the top nine teams ahead of the second and final round leaving the destination of the title wide open.
The opening round also witnessed a hole-in-one for Stephen Bonham (below), who aced the 145-yard 17th.

Cruden Bay's Kevin Duncan lying second in

 EuroPro Tour event in Northumberland

                                                                                      NEWS RELEASE

By NICK TEALE
Paul Reed leads the HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour’s Tree Of Life Championship by one stroke after carding a six under par opening-round 65 at Close House in Northumberland.
Reed, who won on the Tour at Galgorm Castle in 2012, leads from Kevin Duncan (Cruden Bay Golf Club), pictured left,  and five players are two off the top after starting the tournament with rounds of 67 for four under par.
Bristol and Clifton Golf Club representative Reed began his round on the 10th and turned two below the card before making his mark on the traditional front nine, his closing half. He put together a run of three birdies from the 1st but his progress was halted with a bogey at 4. He closed by breaking par at 7 and 9 to record a 65 on the par-71 Colt Course.
“I started on the 10th and conditions were nice this morning,” said Reed. “I had a steady start and knocked a few putts in. I didn’t realise I was shooting that low but when you add them up at the end of the round you realise it was a bit lower than you thought.
“I don’t keep track of my score when I am playing and today it was a nice surprise. I hadn’t played here until this week but I stayed over the weekend after Slaley Hall and got a couple of practice rounds in. It is quite a tough course.
“You really have to control your distance onto the greens because they are quite undulating and if you hit it into the wrong spot it is really easy to drop shots. Today I have hit it into the right spots a lot. It will be difficult to do that three days on the trot but I gave myself chances today and when I did get into trouble I managed to get out of it quite well.
“Close House is a great venue. The courses are outstanding and the academy is brilliant. We are playing The Colt Course and it is pretty special.”
Scotsman Duncan made five birdies, an eagle at 10 – his starting hole - and bogeys at 18 and 1.
Among the five players tied third on four under par is Aaron Rai (DCD Group), who currently occupies fifth on the tour’s Race To Desert Springs money list. He won at Mar Hall in July and another winner this season, Marcus Armitage (Howley Hall Golf Club) is also four under.
Rai and Armitage are joined by Stephen Grant (Mount Juliet), Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck) and Kris Gray (Slaley Hall) on 67.
The Tree Of Life Championship is a 54-hole strokeplay event being staged at Close House. A cut to the leading 50 players and ties will be made after the second round. Friday’s final round will be filmed for a two-hour highlights package to air on Sky Sports on Tuesday, September 1.
Spectator entry is free throughout the event and live scoring can be found at www.europrotour.com.
