McIlroy wins Cadillac World Match-play final

No play Sunday: Gleneagles Scottish pro

championship cut to three rounds over King's

Due to heavy overnight and continuing rain at the Perthshire golf resort, the King's Course was too wet for the £40,000 Gleneagles Scottish professional championship to start today.
The 72-hole event has now been reduced to 54 holes and will end on Wednesday as scheduled.
It's 49 years since the Scottish professional championship was last decided over fewer than 72 holes.
In 1966 John Panton and Eric Brown tied over 36 holes for the title at Cruden Bay. For some reason, there was no play-off. They shared the title with 137 aggregates
PGA in Scotland secretary Brian Mair said:
"Despite the marvellous efforts of the greenkeeping staff, there was no way we could get play underway today. The decision has been taken to cancel play for the day and resume on Monday with the original Monday Round 2 tee times.
"The plan is to complete 18 holes on Monday and then commence Round 2 immediately, with the completion of Round 2 expected on Tuesday. At this point, we will make a cut to Top 50 and ties and complete the championship on Wednesday over the remaining 18 holes."

Allen leads by one on Champions Tour

FROM ESPN.COM
THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- Michael Allen birdied the final two holes for a 4-under 68 and a one-stroke lead Saturday after the second round of the Champions Tour's Insperity Invitational.
The 56-year-old Allen has a 10-under 134 total at The Woodlands Country Club. He has seven victories on the 50-and-over tour, winning twice last season.
"If you haven't won for a while, it just seems like you're never going to do it again," Allen said. "To win again tomorrow would be really important to me. I love playing here. I think they've had a lot of great champions. I would love to be a part of it."
Joe Durant was second after a 68. He had a double bogey in the par-4 17th and rebounded with a birdie on the par-4 18th. Last week, he teamed with Billy Andrade to win the Legends of Golf in Missouri for his first Champions Tour title.
Durant wanted to quickly put the double bogey behind him.
"I just blanked out for a minute on 17," Durant said. "As a result, I hit it in the water and made double. Came back with a nice birdie on 18. I hit a bad shot on 17, but so what? You're going to hit bad shots from time to time."
Scott Dunlap, Woody Austin and Tom Lehman were 8 under. Dunlap had a 65, the best round of the day. Austin and Lehman shot 66.
"I didn't hit the ball super great," Lehman said. "In fact, I hit the ball much better yesterday. I seemed to always manage to get it in the right places and shot a good score."
Defending champion Bernhard Langer was 7 under after a 66. Marco Dawson, tied for the first-round lead with Allen after a 66, had a 72 to drop into a tie for 10th at 6 under.

Cadillac World Match-play

McIlroy v Casey play-off continues Sunday morning, Willett through to semi-final

Rory McIlroy and Paul Casey will return to the TPC Harding Park on Sunday morning (local time) to complete their WGC – Cadillac Match Play quarter-final sudden-death play-off after darkness called a halt to their match on the third extra hole.
McIlroy had a six foot putt to seal the match on the 16th green (the third extra hole of the play-off) but it slid wide and both players agreed the light was too poor to continue. They will resume on the first hole at 06:45am (local time) on Sunday morning.
While McIlroy and Casey have still to settle their quarter-final, the winner of which will face Jim Furyk in the semis, Danny Willett continued to enjoy his dream debut as the Englishman saw off compatriots Lee Westwood and Tommy Fleetwood en route to a semi-final clash with American Gary Woodland.
Woodland defeated Australian pair Marc Leishman and John Senden to reach the semis, while Furyk took down J B Holmes and Louis Oosthuizen.
Before Casey and McIlroy went head-to-head they respectively beat Hideki Matsuyama and Charl Schwartzel. The semi-finals and final will take place on Sunday.

Player Quotes

Rory McIlroy: "I made a couple of key up and downs when I needed to coming down the stretch. I had a couple of opportunities to close it out, one on 18 and one there and could not quite convert. It was getting pretty dark so we will come back in the morning and try again."

Paul Casey: “I dodged a couple of bullets but felt I gave him one or two. I am glad we are teeing up tomorrow, simple as that. I thought I was done for the day and the week on this green (the 16th). The beautiful thing is we hit the reset button, come back at 6:45am and start again. We looked at each other on the 15th (the second extra hole) and said 'One more'. It really was dark, whatever the TV cameras are showing, and both of us agreed."

Danny Willett: “I swung it really well today. I hit some good golf shots, putted nicely. It was a good, solid match against Tommy. You have to feel comfortable in this format - everyone is a good player. And everyone can win if they play good golf. I’m obviously delighted with how the week has gone so far.”
