MENA TOUR RESTARTS

ROOKIE SAM'S GOOD START IN DUBAI

Portlethen's Sam Kiloh, a rookie pro from the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre stable, shot a one-under-par 70 to be joint 11th at the end of the MENA Tour's Dubai Creek Open at Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club today (Monday).

England's Craig Vance and James Housby shared the lead with New Zealander Trevor Marshall on 68.

GET IT ROUND IN THREE-UNDER 67s

Kenneth Ferrie and Chris Kelly shot the best individual rounds of three-under-par 67 on a very wet day at Deeside Golf Club for the Paul Lawrie Invitatonal pro-am.
Steven O'Hara (Mouse Valley) had a 68, his brother Paul (Clydeway Golf) a 69 and European Tour Q School Stage 1 winner Neil Fenwick (Dunbar) a 70. Although not "official money," Paul Lawrie put up £500, £250 and £100 for the best three individual scores.
There was some very good scoring in awful weather with some of greens, particularly the 18th, beginning to show signs of excess water by the end of play.
Steven O'Hara piloted the Hunting 3 team of Alan Reid (11), Alan Morrison (16) and Innes Miller (3) to victory in the pro-am team event with a net 16-under-par 124.
They finished three shots clear of the Marcliffe Hotel 1 team whose pro was Chris Kelly and five clear of Farmfoods 3 (Neil Fenwick).

ENGLISHMAN'S GREAT LAST ROUND PAVES WAY FOR FRENCH WIN

TOM WILDE WINS THREE-WAY

PLAY-OFF FOR ALPS TOUR TRIUMPH

Tom Wilde from England won the Alps Tour event on the French-Luxemburg border, the Citadelle Trophy International at Golf de Preisch.
Wilde beat Matthieu Pavon (France) and Alfonso Gutierrez (Spain) in a three-way play-off after the trio had each totalled 11-under-par 272.
Wilde's rounds were 69, 75, 69 and 64.
Pavon had a 67 in the last round and Gutierrez a 70 which allowed Wilde to make up a lot of ground with his great final score of 64.
He earned 6,525 euros.
Compatriot Andrew Coolley dearned 2,385 euros for fourth place on 278 (10 under par) with scores of 67 72 70 69.

SUPER SCOTT OFF TO SPAIN - OLE!

Dollar’s Scott Borrowman playing as an amateur in the first stage qualifying event made a superb start to his bid to gain a European Tour card for 2015.

At the 7000yd Roxburghe Golf course near Kelso, Scott qualified in second place with a 13 under par score for the 72 hole event.

With the top 17 and ties from a field of over 70 golfers qualifying for the next stage, Scott set up a qualifying place with his first three rounds where he finished 12 under par and was tying the lead.

This took a bit of pressure off him in the final round, where he could relax a bit. Playing conservatively, he continued the good scoring to return a 1 under par 71, spoiled only by an ugly double bogey at the 16^th hole

However it didn’t affect his second placing. Highlights of the round were two eagles (7^th and 14^th) where drives well over 300 yards set up iron shots to the green.

The 571 yard 14th was especially satisfying for him …. a 350yd drive, 5 iron and 12 yard putt demolished the signature hole on the Roxburghe course.

Scott now goes forward to one of the four second stage qualifying venues in Spain, where just under 300 golfers will try to gain one of the 80 or so places for the six-round final stage, with only the top 20 scores or so gaining playing rights on the 2015 European Tour.

Twenty Scots competed, with six gaining a place in the second round.

TOP TEN FINISH FOR ALLOA.

In the Scottish Club Championship held at Lundin Links, the Alloa team put in a reasonable performance finishing 10^th in a field of 16 teams. Represented by Ian Ross, Ian Guthrie and David Milloy, the team returned an aggregate for the first round of 148 (best two scratch scores to count), but fell back in the second round.

Previous successes in this event came from Tulliallan in 1988 and 2002, while Alloa triumphed in 1996 at Cochrane Castle.

INDIVIDUAL SCORES

Ian Ross 75, 72; Ian Guthrie 73, 84; David Milloy 78, 81.

The competition was won by Glenbervie Golf Club with an aggregate of 282, and they will go forward to the European Club Championship final.

AUTUMN MEETING

The last major County Meeting will be held at Alloa this Saturday, when the aggregate trophies will be decided. Late entries are still available for this event by contacting the County Secretary Tommy Johnson.

Tim Thelen followed in the footsteps of Colin Montgomerie when he carded a closing level par round of 72 to win the Senior Open de Portugal at Vidago Palace on Sunday.
The American was second behind his former Houston Baptist University team-mate at the Travis Perkins Masters and then third when Montgomerie won in Moscow, but this time Thelen earned top spot on the podium after a controlled performance which earned him the fourth European Tour title of his career.
Thelen started the day three shots in front of Greg Turner, Des Smyth and Carl Mason after opening rounds of 68 and 64, but in the end he had to face both a late charge from Miguel Angel Martin plus a weather delay before claiming the €33,750 first prize.
The players were called off the course at 4.35 local time but when play resumed forty minutes later Thelen promptly birdied the 17th to open a two shot lead before taking a four down the last to finish one shot ahead of Martin on 12 under par 204.
Mason and Smyth both closed with one under par rounds of 71 to share third place on 206, while Paraguay’s Angel Franco produced one of the biggest moves of the day, carding a seven under par 65 to move up into a share of fifth place alongside Joé Rivero, Steen Tinning, Greg Turner and Chris Williams one shot further behind
“This week I played as well as I can play,” said Thelen. “I’ve played well for the last two weeks but this was even better. I think I hit 16 green today and that’s pretty impressive round here.
“Today, I just did what I needed to. The pins were a lot more difficult today and Des caught me about the ninth so I was under a bit of pressure but I birdied the tenth and just tried to stay patient after that.
“I’ve been struggling with my back all week but today it was much better,” he added. “I almost pulled out after it went into spasm on the second hole yesterday but today, thank God, for the first time in nine or ten days, I didn’t feel a thing.
“It feels so good to be back in the winners’ circle again. I won three times in 2012 but I didn’t play well last year at all and was lucky to keep my card. "However, this year, I’ve played well pretty much all the time. I just didn’t get it done until now. This week, I did.”
Martin is still seeking his first European Senior Tour victory but he believes it is just round the corner after closing with a fine five under par 67 his third top ten in succession.
The Spaniard started the day six shots behind Thelen but cut the deficit to four with an outward nine of 33 and then posted three more coming home to record the third runner-up finish since turning 50 a couple of years ago.
“It’s getting close,” he said. “I was ninth at the Travis Perkins and tied third in the Russia so I knew I was playing well coming in here. I just have to stay patient and wait my turn. But I’m happy with my game and that’s the most important thing to me right now.”

PAUL MAKES UP FOUR-SHOT DEFICIT TO WIN KLM OPEN

Paul Casey triumphed in his first tournament since becoming a father, overturning a four-shot deficit to win the KLM Open by a single stroke on Sunday in the Netherlands.
Casey’s first son Lex was born on September 1, and the new arrival clearly inspired him to a 13th European Tour title as he carded a final round of 66 for a 14 under par winning total. Simon Dyson was runner up on 13 under par.
Dyson was bidding for a fourth KLM Open title, and a third at Kennemer Golf and Country Club, but after a course record 62 on Saturday, followed by five birdies and just one bogey in the final round, it was Casey who succeeded Dutchman Joost Luiten as champion.
Another Englishman, Andy Sullivan, finished third on 12 under par following a remarkable round of 67 which included a hole-in-one on the par three 15th, an ace which earned him a trip into space.
Eddie Pepperell (66) completed an all-English top four, finishing a further shot back, while Luiten closed with a round of 68 for a ten under par total to share fifth position with Spaniard Pablo Larrazábal (65) Sweden’s Johan Carlsson (63) and overnight leader Romain Wattel of France (74).

“I’m a bit emotional to be honest. Although it was very carefree for three and a half days, because if I played well or poorly I was going to go home to see my baby, and then I got to the last three holes and I thought I really want this, not that he is old enough to understand.

“Just having my first child was a great distraction. I had no expectations coming into the week and I did very little practice, although I’ve played good golf. Even flying in Wednesday morning to spend as much time at home as possible, so I was apprehensive as to how I was going to play. I couldn’t have dreamed it would turn out this way. It’s not that I wasn’t trying my hardest on the course, but you just don’t know how it will turn out.”

“It was a really good week again. I just got better every day. Today I played really nice and shot five under. I felt like I left a few out there on the front nine, but then made a few birdies on the back nine and holed out well.
"That keeps your score going and I just fell one short. But it is still a good week.
“It’s frightening how much I like it here. The minute I get off the plane I feel up for it and I fancy it, ever since my first win in 2006. It just shows how much it is mind over matter. I tee it up on the first day and fancy my chances. I just hope it is here for a long time.”

“My daughter will think I’m the best dad in the world – a professional golfer and an astronaut! I’m going to have to pluck up some serious courage, but it is a once in a lifetime experience, so I’m going to have to do it.
“My caddie just shout to me, ‘we’re going to space’. I was in hysterics. It’s just an unreal experience. I didn’t play great through the round and then I hit a shot like that. I had two 2s out there, but not been close to it. So I wasn’t really even thinking about it.
"It’s been such a rollercoaster of a day. I just strapped myself in and went for the ride. Overall it’s been a great week and I’ve really enjoyed myself here at the KLM Open."
