SEQUEL TO PERFORMANCES IN IRISH OPEN

EDOARDO MOLINARI, BALDWIN AND

WILLETT SECURE PLACES IN OPEN

NEWS RELEASE FROM R and A
Edoardo Molinari, Matthew Baldwin and Danny Willett secured their places in The 143rd Open Championship today after the final round of the Irish Open at Fota Island Resort.
Molinari closed with a 67 to finish in second place on 12-under-par, one shot behind winner Mikko Ilonen of Finland.
The 33-year-old Italian will now make his fifth appearance at The Open when it is played from July 17 to 20 at Royal Liverpool.
The two-time European Tour winner and 2010 Ryder Cup player has not played at a Major Championship since The Masters in 2012 and has been focused on returning to form after two surgeries on his left wrist.
“It is very exciting that after two years with an injury and all sorts of problems that I will be back to play this Major, especially now that I’m hitting the ball probably the best I’ve ever hit,” said Molinari
“I played Royal Liverpool in my last event as an amateur so it has a special place in my heart. I’m really looking forward to it.”
Molinari will be joined by England’s Baldwin and Willett after both finished tied third on 11-under-par alongside Sweden’s Kristoffer Broberg.
The pair earned the second and third qualifying places based on their higher positions in the Official World Golf Ranking.
Baldwin has a single victory on the Challenge Tour and played his first Open at Royal Lytham and St Annes in 2012 when he finished tied 23rd. The 28-year-old is looking forward to making his second Major Championship appearance close to home.
“I grew up playing golf at Ascot and moved to Royal Birkdale when I was 18 so I've grown up on links golf,” said Baldwin. “It’s definitely always been a dream of mine to play and possibly win The Open one day. It’s brilliant.”
Willett posted the only hole-in-one of the Irish Open on his way to establishing a new course record of 63 in the third round.
The 2012 BMW International Open Champion is a former Walker Cup player and in March of 2008 was the number one ranked player in the WAGR before turning professional. He will make his third Open appearance at Hoylake after finishing tied 15th in 2013 at Muirfield.
“I remember watching Tiger win at Hoylake a few years ago and it looks like a special place to have an Open Championship. I’ve played a lot of links golf and it’s a different kind of test but it’s one that I look forward to,” said Willett.
The Qualifying Series continues and the next event on the European Tour will be The Alstom Open de France from July 3 to 6 at Le Golf National near Paris.

ELDERSLIE PLAYER FOUR SHOTS BEHIND AUSSIE LEADER AFTER ROUND 3

McDOUGALL CLICKETY-CLICKS IN

LAST ROUND TO WIN TENNANT CUP

Elderslie's Alasdair McDougall, pictured below,  produced a brilliant last round of four-under-par 66 to leapfrog the tournament leaders over the final 18 holes and win the prestigious Tennant Cup at Glasgow Golf Club's Killermont course today (Sunday).
McDougall's first two rounds at Glasgow Gailes on Saturday - 71 and 72 for 143 - left him in joint third place behind halfway leader Adam Dunton (McDonald Ellon) (71-69) and Scott Gibson (Southerness) (70-71) at the start of the day.
Dunton's third-round 75 and Gibson's 73 left the door open for their challengers.
Australian Ben Ferguson took over the lead with a 69 for 212, two shots clear of Gbison (73 for 214), three ahead of Dunton (75 for 214) and four ahead of McDougall (73 for 216) and Scott Borrowman (69 for 216).
McDougall, who had a morning 73 at Killermont, got it altogether for a last-round surge to victory with a par-matching 282 total.
Dunton found his form again with a closing 69 for 284 but that was good enough only to share second place with  Ferguson (The Vines) whose closing 72 allowed McDougall to make up the four-shot leeway and have two more to spare.
Borrowman, whose 67-69 scores at Killermont represented the Sunday best by anyone in the field, finished fourth on 285.
An opening round of six-over 77 at Glasgow Gailes came back to haunt the Dollar man  - and, in the final analysis, cost him victory.

WALLACE BOOTH AND PAUL McKECHNIE TIE FOR 21ST PLACE

                            William Harrold ... another victory
HARROLD THE CONQUEROR WINS

BELGIAN CHALLENGE EVENT

William Harrold from Norfolk added the Belgian Challenge to his two EuroPro Tour wins this year by beating Germany's Florian Fritsch at the first hole of a sudden death play-off.
They had tied on 18-under-par 266 at the end of four rounds.
Wallace Booth (Comrie) and Braid Hills' Paul McKechnie tied for 21st place and earned 1,498 euros each.
George Murray finished T48 and earned 704 euros.

REPORT BY EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
William Harrold won his maiden Challenge Tour title at the Belgian Challenge Open after prevailing in a play-off against Florian Fritsch at Cleydael Golf and Country Club.
The overnight leader held his nerve to card a five under par 66 on an enthralling final day, but Fritsch forced a play-off by making up the one shot deficit with a round of 65.
Harrold, twice a winner on the satellite EuroPro Tour this year, showed composure when it mattered most to eventually triumph with a par on the first extra hole, which Fritsch could not match.
“It was a tough day,” said Harrold. “In addition to all the drama, Florian is a friend of mine, so winning like this after he made a bogey wasn’t ideal. But that’s what happens in golf, and I’m very happy with this victory.”
The win, which sees Harrold climb to 13th on the Challenge Tour Rankings, will put the Englishman in the spotlight.
However, not much seems to faze the new Belgian Challenge Open Champion.
“My game is all about staying cool as much as I can,” he said. “It is never over until the last putt and my last putt was a foot and a half, but I have to admit, it felt longer than it looked. My life won’t change with this victory, although I imagine my schedule might.”
While Germany’s Fritsch came so close to winning, he will be more than satisfied with the consistency he has shown in northern Belgium this week, which saw him card four rounds in the 60s.
In a tie for third, only two shots back from Harrold and Fritsch, were the English pair Dave Coupland and Jason Palmer.
Both men had held the lead at various stages before the weekend, and a pair of 66s meant they finished on 16 under par.
Elsewhere, Joel Stalter continued his impressive display over the tricky lay-out in the suburban town of Aartselaar with a final round of 67.
Stalter, who was making only his second appearance as a professional, has a lot to feel pleased about.
“I am proud of this result,” said the confident Frenchman. “I am only a rookie and I am learning my job. I played really well over the first nine, but everyone else made a lot of birdies too. I was a bit disappointed with my three bogeys coming home though. I paid quite a heavy price for two bad shots.
“But I am happy with the way I finished, with two birdies on the last two holes. I was not sure about where I finished up on the leaderboard, but it could’ve been worse than fifth for my second week on the Challenge Tour. Next week, why not a win?”

FINN ILONEN LEADS FROM PILLAR TO
POST TO WIN IRISH OPEN

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Finland's Mikko Ilonen completed a wire-to-wire victory as he celebrated his 300th European Tour appearance by winning the Irish Open at Fota Island Resort.
Ilonen carded a final round of 70 to finish 13 under par, one shot ahead of Italy's Edoardo Molinari, with Sweden's Kristoffer Broberg and English duo Danny Willett and Matthew Baldwin another shot back in third.

Graeme McDowell had been hoping to claim a first professional victory in Ireland in front of the massive crowds in Cork, but struggled on the greens and had to settle for a closing 71 and a share of sixth with Magnus A Carlsson, his first top-ten finish in 13 appearances in the event.

Ilonen established a new course record of 64 in the opening round and although that only lasted until Willett, aided by a hole-in-one, shot 63 on Saturday, the 34 year old Finn took a one-shot lead into the final round.

Birdies on the second and fourth took Ilonen three clear of the field until Willett carded his second birdie of the day on the ninth, but that was as close as anyone got until Ilonen dropped his only shot of the day on the last, ironically after hitting an iron off the tee for safety.

English teenager Matt Fitzpatrick, who was the only amateur to make the cut in the US Open last week, finished in a tie for 29th in his first tournament as a professional following a closing 68.

Ilonen's victory was the second wire-to-wire effort in as many weeks after Martin Kaymer's triumph at Pinehurst No.2, and the Finn admitted he had been inspired by The Ryder Cup hero.
“It was very much Martin Kaymer-inspired win,” he said. “I sent a message to him last week that I really enjoyed watching his golf.

“I very rarely enjoy watching golf; I would rather play golf, but Martin's win inspired me. It was nice to keep that lead all the way.

“I made sure that I paced myself well and I'm not too quick with things and keep my head up no matter what happens, and I kept on doing the same thing all the time, tried to hit the fairway. I hit a lot of greens today and kept okay pace with my putting.

“I looked back on the 18th green and I couldn't believe how many people there were.  It's nice to see - it was a very humble moment.”

BRADLEY NEIL WINS BRITISH

MEN'S AMATEUR TITLE AT 18

NEWS RELEASE FROM THE R and A
Blairgowrie’s Bradley Neil won the Amateur Championship at Royal Portrush today after a closely fought final with South African Zander Lombard.
Neil clinched the match with a half on the par 5 35th hole for a 2 and 1 victory in the 36-hole final. The 18-year-old Blairgowrie golfer became the first Scot to win the Amateur Championship since Stuart Wilson at St Andrews in 2004.
Neil’s form on the back nine and coolness under pressure helped him clinch the title and earned him a place in next month’s Open Championship at Royal Liverpool, the 2015 US Open at Chambers Bay and a traditional invitation to the Masters.
“To play in front of big crowds like this is incredible,” he said. “I would like to thank my caddie Michael Stewart. This win is not just for me,  it is for everyone that has helped me. I am so proud that my name will be added to the list of past winners.
“It means a lot to me to have the chance to compete with Major champions in The Open.  It will be fantastic it will be a strong test and it will be good to see how my game copes.
“Zander is a brilliant guy and we have been good friends for the last six months. He is a very strong, determined player. He didn’t make it easy for me. He’s got a lot of game and he is a really good talent.”
Despite his disappointment, the 19-year-old Lombard, who was hoping to become only the second South African winner after Bobby Cole in 1966, was delighted to have reached the final and has earned a place in Final Qualifying for The Open Championship.
“I’m very pleased with my achievement,” he said. “My golf’s been good all week. We both played really solid today and I have to say thumbs up to Bradley, he’s an awesome golfer with a lot of talent. We are pretty good friends and it is always nice having really good company on the golf course.
“We both just made a lot of pars and played really solid golf without making any mistakes. I had a few errant shots around the turn of the afternoon round but all in all I am really happy with my performance and my golf and am really looking forward to the rest of my career.”
The final was all square after a closely fought 18 holes in the morning in which both players recorded level par rounds of 70, with Lombard playing the steadier golf.
The South African hit 16 of 18 greens in the morning round and had six birdie putts he failed to convert. Neil only managed to find eight greens in regulation but his short game kept him hard on Lombard’s heels.
After the opening exchanges Lombard remained one hole up until the 12th when he missed his first green of the day and failed to get up and down to take the match back to all square. Neil went ahead at the 16th when Lombard bunkered his tee shot and couldn’t advance the ball to the green. Neil meanwhile holed a 10 foot birdie putt. The match went back all square on the par-5, 17th when Neil recorded a bogey after finding the left rough off the tee and Lombard managed a fine birdie.
The afternoon round began the way the morning session ended for Lombard, with the South African failing to take advantage of birdie chances. He watched with dismay as a 15 foot putt at the 19th just curled away from the hole. He missed another birdie putt at the par-3 21st hole, when his 18 foot attempt just shaved the left edge of the hole.
In between, the Pretoria native hit a poor drive at the par-5, 20th hole to find the left rough. His second shot didn’t clear the rough and he lost the hole when Neil made a birdie.
Neil was much more composed at the beginning of the afternoon session and he hit seven of the first nine greens.
Lombard got the match back to all square with a birdie three at the 25th when he holed a 20 foot birdie putt. The pair traded holes at the 26th and 27th holes. A wild tee shot into the left rough on the 26th meant a bogey and back to one down for Lombard. He quickly got that back, though, when he holed a six foot putt for birdie to take the match to the 28th all-square.
Neil moved ahead on the back nine, however, when Lombard bogeyed the par 4 28th and the par 3 29th. When Neil won the 31st hole with a bogey five, after Lombard lost his ball with his drive, and the next with a par three, the situation looked ominous for Lombard as he fell four behind.
The South African showed his resilience to win the next two holes with birdie threes, including holing from off the green from 20 feet on the 34th hole.
But when both players halved in par at the penultimate hole the match was over. Neil had two putts from ten feet to seal his win.
“When he bogeyed 10 and 11, I think that really swung things in my favour,” added Neil. “I went two up and it was going to be tough for him to get back from that.
"When he lost a ball down 13, I went three up with five to go so it is going to be tough for anyone, especially when I then went four up with four to go. I really wanted it to be over but I’m just glad it is done now.”
Neil, who is currently ranked 38th in the World Amateur Golf RankingTM, has followed in the footsteps of players such as Matteo Manassero, Sergio Garcia and Mikko Ilonen in winning the Amateur Championship and can now look forward to playing in The Open at Hoylake next month.

Report from Web.com Tour website

WICHITA, Kan. – Sebastian Cappelen couldn’t have dreamed of a better scenario heading into the final round of the Air Capital Classic presented by Aetna. Cappelen, a Monday qualifier, fired his second straight 65 on Saturday afternoon at Crestview Country Club to grab the outright lead at 14-under 196.
PGA TOUR veteran Andre Gonzales is in second at 12-under 198 after a bogey-free 66.
Web.com Tour rookie Sung Joon Park (64), Matt Weibring (66), Blayne Barber (67) and Rob Oppenheim (67) are two-strokes off the pace.
Local favorite Aaron Watkins (71), who held the 36-hole lead, struggled on Saturday afternoon and finds himself four-strokes back along with amateur Ollie Schniederjans (65), Paul Claxton (67) and Jeff Gove (68).
Cappelen maintained his aggressive strategy off the tee using his driver most of the day but hit only eight fairways. With precise irons from the rough and a smooth putting stroke, the former University of Arkansas Razorback managed to keep his card clean in the third round. Coming off of the 18th green Cappelen looked over at the leaderboard and noticed his name at the top.
“I don’t know what to say, it’s all new to me,” he said. “I’m just trying to do what I know best, and that’s just play golf.”
Cappelen came to Wichita with something to prove. The 24-year-old pro from Denmark doesn’t have any travel plans past this week. A win on the Web.com Tour can change a young touring professional’s life and Cappelen is well aware of the opportunity that presents itself on Sunday afternoon.
“It’s my one shot as of now and there’s nothing guaranteed,” he said. “It’s the dream, sometimes dreams come true and for me it’s just happening right now.”
Gonzales has been playing steady all season and things seem to be trending in the right direction for him to get back in the winner’s circle this week. The Washington native has been working with Anne Marie Gildersleeve, a teaching professional, in Austin, Texas straightening out the 31-year old pro’s flight pattern which has given Gonzales confidence in the gusty conditions this week.
“I feel like I can control my trajectory really well,” he said. “I’m able to work shots both ways and I’m very comfortable over shots when I’m fighting the wind.”
Gonzales' iron game has been on point this week. The University of Las Vegas-Nevada alum hit 16 greens on Saturday afternoon but missed on a few chances once on the putting surfaces. Gonzales feels that if he can get a feel putts to go in early he can put a special round together on Sunday.
“I’m pleased with the way I’m playing,” he said. “I feel like I still have a really hot round coming.”

US PGA TOUR REPORT AND SCORES

  • RYAN MOORE LEADS BY ONE AS HE CHASES TRAVELERS VICTORY

FROM THE US PGA TOUR WEBSITE
  • After four top-15s at this event, could Ryan Moore finally pick up a victory? (Jim Rogash/Getty Images) After four top-15s at this event, could Ryan Moore finally pick up a victory? (Jim Rogash/Getty Images)
CROMWELL, Connecticut -- Four times Ryan Moore has finished in the top 15 at the Travelers Championship. Two of those were runner-up finishes.
The only thing he hasn’t done at TPC River Highlands? Win.
After a third-round 66, he’ll have a chance to do just that on Sunday.
Moore is 13 under and has a one-shot lead over Aaron Baddeley. Four others, including Sergio Garcia, are another stroke back.
"It's just funny how weeks go," Moore said. "This is the type of grass and everything I grew up on, and I think I'm comfortable with chipping and the putting aspects on this golf course and I think that's where the success comes from."
It's showed. For a third straight day Moore holed an eagle, this one from just off the green on No. 6. It was the second time this week he has done so on the par 5.
Moore added two more birdies, chipping in again at the par-3 11th and hitting his approach shot to four feet on the 17th on another spectacular day of weather that was ideal for scoring.
For the second time this week, TPC River Highlands played under par and 36 players were in red figures.
Not surprisingly, Moore was one of them.
He is second in the field in fairways hit for the week and fourth in total putts with 81, including 28 on Saturday.
Moore has also taken a laid-back approach to this week’s event after the grind of the U.S. Open at Pinehurst last week.
"I generally don't tend to over practice here in general, but I've even cut back a little bit," Moore said. "I think it's good. I've kind of showed up every day with a good focus and just ready to go play golf."

BADDELEY BOUNCING BACK:
Last year, Aaron Baddeley didn’t know where the ball was going or what was wrong with his swing.
In October, he started working with Grant Waite and Chris Como.
“Those guys really were the first guys really to give me some true understanding what was wrong,” Baddeley said. “Why the ball wasn't going straight.”
It has looked like it through three rounds at TPC River Highlands.
Baddeley shot 65 Saturday and is in position to try for his first win on the PGA TOUR in three years.
“It feels like a long time ago, yet it doesn't in the sense of the feeling of being in this position doesn't feel abnormal,” Baddeley said
During the process Baddeley discovered his right arm was getting stuck behind him and that he had a bad wrist angle into the ball.
He looked at the swings of players who hit the ball straight and saw his arm and wrist were doing the opposite.
“It's been a steady progress of just improving like percent by percent day by day,” he said. “I feel like I'm getting really close to playing some really good golf.”
