MARTIN LAIRD LOSES GROUND WITH THIRD-ROUND 73

PHIL MICKELSON SHOOTS A 63,

RORY McILROY A 65 AT WELLS FARGO

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (AP) -- Even with his best round of the year, Phil Mickelson knew it wouldn't be enough for him to stay in the lead Saturday at the Wells Fargo Championship.
That was OK with Lefty.
All he wanted was a chance at Quail Hollow, and Mickelson hasn't had a better chance to win all year.
Mickelson roared into contention by playing a six-hole stretch in 7-under on the front nine, and keeping bogeys off his card with a wedge that danced around the cup on the 18th for a 9-under 63.
He was leading when he finished and wound up the third day two shots behind J.B. Holmes, who overtook Martin Flores for the lead on the last hole.
"I don't think I'll be leading at the end of the day because I think there are some birdies out there," Mickelson said. "But just to be in contention, and to have a chance at a golf course that I've become so close to over the years, I'm excited about tomorrow's round."
Holmes, pounding tee shots and gaining confidence along the way, had a 9-iron left on the 490-yard closing hole and made a 20-foot birdie putt from the fringe. That gave him a 6-under 66, and it made him the outright leader when Flores made his only big mistake of the round.
Flores pulled his tee shot into the stream that winds along the left side of the 18th fairway. He at least gave himself a chance to save par, but missed a 20ft putt and had to settle for a 69.
Holmes goes into the final round with a shot at coming back from injuries, one of them far more noteworthy than the others. He had brain surgery in 2011 to remove a piece of his skull. Then, he broke his ankle in 2013, and time off allowed him to have surgery on his left elbow.
And now he takes a one-shot lead into the final round at 13-under 203.
"I've worked really hard to get there and it would be a great accomplishment to come back and get a win in the bag," Holmes said.
Flores feels the same way. His best finish in four seasons on the US PGA Tour was a tie for fourth in the John Deere Classic last year, when he closed with a 63 and finished one shot out of a three-way play-off won by fellow Dallas resident Jordan Spieth.
Flores describes himself as a flat-liner, and he played the part Saturday, the first time he ever played in the final group on the weekend. He never looked at a leaderboard because he figured it didn't matter on a Saturday. He didn't let adrenaline get the best of him when he rolled in a 40ft birdie putt from just off the 12th green for his third straight birdie and a two-shot lead. He never came seriously close to a bogey until the 18th hole.
And not even that bothered him. So when asked if he could be the winner Sunday, Flores shrugged and said, "Why not me?"
"I've been working really hard, feeling great about my game," he said. "I'm going to go out there and attack. If I win, I win. If I don't, I don't. I'm going to keep working until I do."
Kevin Kisner had a 68 and was three shots behind. Justin Rose bogeyed his last hole for a 71 and was four shots back, along with Jason Bohn, who made three birdies over his last four holes for a 67. Former PGA champion Martin Kaymer bogeyed his last two holes for a 70 and was five behind.
The last 54-hole leader to win at Quail Hollow was Anthony Kim in 2008.
That could bode well for Mickelson, off to his worst start to a season in 11 years.
Not since 2003 -- the last year he went winless on the US Tour  -- has Mickelson gone this deep into a year without winning.
Worse yet, he doesn't even have a top 10. He had to deal with a back injury in San Diego and an oblique muscle strain in Texas. He missed the cut at the Masters last month for the first time in 17 years.
"I had a good round today, and it feels good because it's been a rough year for me this year," Mickelson said. "I haven't been healthy early on and I haven't put it together. And to have a good round today, good round the first round, this is a good start."
Mickelson said he didn't feel far off after his 75 on Friday, and he was right. He was helped by a couple of long birdie putts on the fourth and sixth holes, and by a 20-foot eagle putt on the par-5 seventh hole that revved up the crowd on a gorgeous day of sunshine.
Rory McIlroy set the pace early for a day of low scoring with a 65 that brought back memories of 2010, when he made the cut on the number and went 66-62 to win for the first time on the US Tour. He was four shots behind that year going into Sunday.
But with Holmes and Flores finishing strong, McIlroy goes into the last round seven shots behind.
Martin Laird, not for the first time this season, nosedived after getting himself into a possible challenging position at halfway
He went from 69-70 for the first two rounds to a third-round 73, not a bad score by any means but, in this class of company, a player goes backwards when he scores over par.
Laird is on 212.

McDONALD JOINT SECOND AT HALFWAY, THREE OFF THE PACE

JACK'S ALIVE WITH A WINNING

CHANCE IN LYTHAM TROPHY

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Jack McDonald (Kilmarnock Barassie), joint second at the halfway stage, has a three-shot leeway to make up on German leader Hurly Long if he is to add his name to the list of Scots who have won the prestigious Lytham Trophy down through years.
McDonald stepped up a gear from an opening round of 73 with a two-under-par 68 for a 36-hole tally of one-over 141. He birdied the fourth, eighth, short 12th and 18th - bogeys at the third and 17th - over the Royal Lytham and St Annes course that is an Open championship venue.
Hurly Long, the only men in the star-studded field to be under par after 36 holes, is on 138 after a pair of 69s for 138
Alongside McDonald on the 141 mark are South African Thriston Lawrence (72-69) and Harry Casey (Enfield) (71-70).
Other Scots to beat the cut are Blairgowrie's Bradley Neil (75-71) and Scott Gibson (Southerness) (74-72), both on 146, Adam Dunton (McDonald Ellon) on 147 (75-72), Dunbar's Alexander Culverwell on 148 (76-72) and Graeme Robertson (Glenbervie) on 149 (74-75). Robertson was a top-10 finishers last year.
Scott Borrowman (Dollar) missed out by a shot with 74 and 76 for 150.

THE CHAMPIONSHIP AT LAGUNA THIRD ROUND REPORT, SCORES

PANUPHOL, HANSEN SHARE LEAD

Singapore: Thailand’s Panuphol Pittayarat survived a late bogey scare but continued to take the third-round lead with Denmark’s Anders Hansen after posting a three-under-par 69 at The Championship at Laguna National today.
Hansen denied Panuphol the outright lead by signing for a 67 to share pole position with the 21-year-old Thai after compiling a three-day total of 16-under-par 200 at the US$1.5 million event sanctioned by the Asian Tour and European Tour.
South Korean-American David Lipsky remained in contention for his second win on the Asian Tour after carding a 70 to share third place with Robert-Jan Derksen of the Netherlands on 202 at the Laguna National Golf and Country Club.
Panuphol, nicknamed ‘Coconut,’ enjoyed yet another fruitful day as he continued his charge towards his maiden win on the region’s premier Tour.
“I’ve been in contention a couple of times where I got to play with some great players. I will try not to think about how they are doing and just do my best. It’s going to be a good Sunday,” said Panuphol.
Playing in the weekend rounds for the first time on the Asian Tour this season, Panuphol could only find one birdie, at the fourth, on in his outward-nine.
But the Thai began to show his title credentials by firing birdies on holes 13, 15 and 16. A bogey-four on 17 however blemished his otherwise flawless card.
“I was just pushing every putt I made in the front-nine. But on the back nine, I kind of gained back my confidence when I managed to roll in the putts, except for that bogey on 17 where I hit a bad shot.
I came into this week missing three straight cuts on the Asian Tour this season. My performance so far this week has definitely given me a huge confidence boost,” said Panuphol.
Meanwhile a late flurry of birdies in his closing four holes saw Hansen making his move to share the lead with Panuphol.
The Dane, who started the day two back of Panuphol in tied-fifth, got off to an encouraging start with an opening birdie on the par-four first.
Another birdie on eight saw him turn in 34 but it was his hat-trick of birdies starting from 15 that eventually surged him to the top.
“I’m very pleased. I didn’t hit the ball that great today but I made a couple of good putts on the last few holes.  It was nice to finish with those three birdies. It was a little more windy today so it was more tricky. But it was a great finish,” said Hansen.
“Every time you are up there you have to be pleased so I’m looking forward to tomorrow. I love competition and I love playing under the gun as it gets your attention,” added the Dane.
A round of 70 put the spring back in Lipsky’s step as he moves into contention for his second win on the Asian Tour.
Lipsky burst into the scene during his rookie year in 2012 where he not only topped the Asian Tour Qualifying School but also went on to notch his first victory in Cambodia.
The 25-year-old will go out with all guns blazing in search of those all-important red numbers in his final 18 holes.
“My target is to go to 20-under-par tomorrow to give myself a good shot at winning. That means I need another six-under-par tomorrow. I will see what I can do,” said Lipsky.
“I am looking forward to the final round tomorrow. With the current greens condition and how I’ve shot on this course, I will have to try and make as many birdies as possible tomorrow,” added Lipsky.
