SAUCIER, Mississippi (AP) -- Jeff Maggert became the 17th player in Champions Tour history to win in his debut, shooting a 4-under 68 on Sunday at the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic presented by C Spire.
Maggert fell into a tie for the lead with Billy Andrade after making bogey on No. 16, but responded with by holing a 50ft putt for birdie on No. 17 that pushed him back ahead.
Maggert's decisive putt had a large break from left to right and was over a ridge, and the 50-year-old struck it perfectly, shaking his head in disbelief after it fell in the hole.
Andrade, who started the day tied with Fred Funk for the lead, shot a 71 to finish in second two strokes back.
Maggert finished the tournament with an 11-under 205.
Bernhard Langer finished with a 68 for 208 to share third place with Jay Haas (71).
Fred Couples, last weekend's winner and first-round leader here, came fifth after a72 for 209.
Colin Montgomerie finished a creditable joint sixth with a closing, bogey-free round of 70 for 210. Monty had 16 pars and birdies at the sixth and 16th.
Sandy Lyle, the other Scot in the field, finished with a 71 for two-under 214.

ORLANDO, Florida -- The first tournament Matt Every attended as a kid growing up in nearby Daytona Beach was the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard.
He never could have imagined winning there. Sunday, he did.
"It's hard," an emotional Every said after a final-round, 2-under 70 gave him a one-shot victory at Bay Hill and the first of his career on the US PGA Tour. "It's tough, man. You just never know if it's going to happen. You get there so many times. It's nice to get it done."
He had plenty of help from Masters champ Adam Scott, who entered the weekend with a seven-shot lead and was up by four over Every entering the final round.
But the Aussie had an uncanny collapse with a 76 to tumble to third, two shots back. Keegan Bradley, who began the day three back, needed to make a 30-foot putt on the 18th to force a playoff, shot 72 to finish second.
I can't believe I won,” said the 30-year-old Every, who earned 500 FedExCup points, a spot in the Masters for the first time and well over a million dollars in prizemoney. 
“Being close to winning out here, I mean it can be kind of discouraging because if you don't win you just wonder if it's ever going to happen.
“I don't see how it could get much better than this, being so close to where I grew up and all the fans out there that were cheering me on. It was awesome.”
At times, so was Every.
He made four birdies in a five-hole stretch in the middle of his round to surge past a struggling Scott, taking the lead for good with a birdie on the par-4 13th.
In the end, though, he had to hang on in a wild final hour.
After finding the right rough on the par-5 16th, Every’s second shot struck a tree and he was forced to lay up short of the green. His next shot landed 25 feet behind the hole and he two-putted for bogey, opening the door for Scott.
Playing in the group behind Every, Scott reached the 16th in two but three-putted from 20 feet.
Every bogeyed the 18th, too, but could finally breathe a sigh of relief when Bradley missed his putt to tie.
“I kept telling myself, ‘Maybe it’s going to be somewhere special,’” Every said about going for his first win. “This is really cool.”

SCOTT STUMBLES WITH PUTTER
Adam Scott entered the weekend with the world No. 1 ranking within reach.
He left frustrated after a final-round 76 to finish two shots back of Every.
"Sometimes you've got to be hard on yourself; sometimes you don't," Scott said. "And I think I was getting into a really good spot and had an opportunity here to run away with an event and really take a lot of confidence. I'm annoyed that I didn't do better today."
The biggest culprit was his putting. Scott took 63 putts over the final two rounds, including 32 on Sunday. 
He made just one putt over 6 1/2 feet all day and three-putted from 20 feet after reaching the par-5 16th in two with a chance to tie Every for the lead.
Instead, Scott missed from just inside four feet and was left to wonder what might have been.

Had Scott won he would have taken over the top spot in the Official World Golf Rankings for the first time in his career.
"Today was a bit shaky," the Aussie admitted. "It was just a little out of sorts for whatever reason. And my short game just wasn't there. So that needs to be tightened up and probably shows that I need to do a bit more work on it to hold up under the pressure."
Perhaps a trip to Augusta National will help.
Scott, who will defend his Masters title there in three weeks, will spend the next couple of days there before going home to the Bahamas.
"If nothing else, it's a good reminder on how much putting practice I need to do for going to the Masters and just how important it is," he said. "And if I think back to last year, I made every putt that you expect to in that last round and ultimately that's, I guess, maybe what gave me the chance to win."

A FEW FIRSTS
Erik Compton was never really in contention on Sunday but his final-round 69 was good enough to earn him a tie for fifth at 9 under.
In 92 career starts on the US PGA Tour, the double heart transplant recipient’s only other top 10 came at last year’s Honda Classic, where he tied for fourth.
The only time Compton did check the scoreboard in the final round?
“Well, Arnold Palmer was on 16, and he gave me the thumbs up,” Compton said. “It’s kind of hard to hit a shot when you’re in contention and he’s looking at you.”
Meanwhile, reigning FedExCup champion Henrik Stenson picked up his first top 10 of the season, also tying for sixth. It was his first top 10 on TOUR since winning the 2013 TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola.
Likewise, Brandt Snedeker tied for eighth for his first top 10 of the season.

Russell Knox followed up two 71s with a disappointing 72-74 weekend which placed him T43 on level par 288.
At least that was a lot better than the only other Scot in the field, Martin Laird, who had a 76 on Saturday and a 78 on Sunday to fill the last place among the 76 qualifiers on nine-over 297.
Padraig Harrington had a nightmare 80 in his final round for 293 and a share of 67th place.

LATIMER HEADS EAST QUALIFIERS 

FOR ORDER OF MERIT EVENTS

Former Scottish amateur international Peter Latimer, pictured above, was the outright winner of The PGA in England (East) 36-hole qualifying school held at Essendon Country Club.
Felixstowe Ferry assistant Latimer, who helped Suffolk to win the inaugural SkyCaddie PGA in England and Wales Inter-County Championship at The Belfry in October, was five-under-par 139 for the tournament and four-under 68 for his second round.
Latimer comes from Markinch, Fife and is a former pupil of Madras College, St Andrews. He also played on the US college circuit as a student at Guilford College, Greensboro, North Carolina. His
clubs as an amateur were St Andrews New and Lundin Links.
Richard Smith of Oxhey Park Golf Centre had the best second round score of six-under-par 66. He ended joint runner-up with the consistent senior, Andrew George of Ely City.
They were only shot behind Latimer, who did not enter last year’s Order of Merit events but could be a power in 2014.
Darren Charlton of Dunstable Downs was five-under for his second round which lifted him to fourth place, a shot clear of Chris Cutchie of Colchester and Nicholas Cunningham of Bedford and County. Both were one-under-par.
Fifty players from a field of 108 qualified for the six Order of Merit events in the PGA in England East Region this year. The 50^th place was settled on count back with one qualifier from the eight who finished on 10-over-par. Fredrick Harrington of Rayleigh Golf Range won the last place with a second round of 73 which was equalled by Carl Parker of Crews Hill.

The World Golf Hall of Fame has announced a new induction process featuring Arnold Palmer and Gary Player on a selection committee.

A 16-person panel will now consider entries under new criteria, in which players must be over 40 years old, have 15 wins on the major golf tours and a minimum of two major victories.
The committee will be jointly chaired by Palmer and Player along with retired LPGA Tour legends Annika Sorenstam and Nancy Lopez.
The new rules, which will come into effect for the class of 2015, will make it easier for golf's top women players to gain entry to the Hall of Fame.
"The new process will set up the Hall of Fame for long-term success," Palmer said.
"We will be keeping the bar for induction priorities high. I think the steps that have been made are good and we are endorsing it wholeheartedly."
Lopez added: "The standard is important to the players who previously qualified. The standard will remain high for selection."
Player said the move was vital to recognise players who have enjoyed significant success outside of the European and PGA Tours.
"What excites me is the international aspect," said the South African. "Everybody internationally who has played such a vital role has been included."
Jack Peter, the World Golf Hall of Fame chief operating officer, added: "We wanted to put the decision-making process in the right hands and ensure that the selection process remains there for years to come.
"It will eventually mean more women are considered and inducted into the Hall of Fame."

EDITOR'S FOOTNOTE:  Colin Montgomerie - who never won a Major - gained his place in the Hall of Fame last year ... just in time. There was
comment at the time that a major-less player is not a genuinte Hall of Famers. Of course, Colin is not

EARLY BIRD McMULLEN FLIES OFF 

WITH SGU JUNIOR CHAMPIONS' TITLE

An early starting time when a cold wind was not quite so strong played a part in Niall McMullen's victory with a one-under-par 70 in the rescheduled SGU Junior Champion of Champions one-round tournament over The Duke's Course, St Andrews today.
The competition should have been played last autumn but had to be postponed due to flooding.

Lundin Golf Club member McMullen - in the first group off the tee and well used to playing in a wind on the Fife coastline - made the most of his luck of the draw, playing very well to notch birdies at the long first, long 11th and 17th, offset only by bogeys at the short 16th and 18th in halves of 35.

McMullen played in last year's Under-16 boys international against England and he made the last 16 of the International Junior Masters tournament in the United States.

Underlining the advantage of an early morning start, George Burns (Williamwood), in the second threesome off the tee, finished joint second on 71 with Dundee's Connor Cook (Caird Park).

Burns had an eagle 3 at the long sixth and birdies at the seventh and 11th but had four bogeys in halves of 35-36.

Cook had birdies at the sixth, 13th and 17th but bogeys at the second, eighth and 16th in halves of 37-34.

Scottish schoolboys champion Connor Syme (Dumfries and Galloway) had the best inward halves of the day, 33, thanks to birdies at the 11th, 12th and 15th after the outward half cost him 39 shots.

British boys champion Ewen Ferguson (Bearsden) finished fith on 75 while Scottish boys match-play title-holder, Bradley Neil (Blairgowrie) had an uncharacteristic, error-strewn 81 to finished joint 26th in a field of 46.

Neil had triple bogey 7s at the fourth and 13th, and a double bogey 7 at the first.

He dropped seven shots to par over the last seven holes in halves of 40-41.

Scott Drummond and Michael Stewart earned £575 apiece for finishiong joint fourth in the Jamega Tour 36-hole event over the weekend at Quinta do Vale Golf Club in the northwest of Portugal's Algarve coastline.

Drummond was two over par for the last five holes with scores of 71-75 for two-over 14while Stewart birdied the 12th, 13th and 16th only to run up a double bogey 6 at the 18th in his repeat 73.

They finished one shot behind the three Englishmen who contested a sudden death play-off  Jamie Abbot (71-74) won the first prize of £2,000 in the play-off.

David Dixon (71-74) and Tom Whitehouse (74-71) earned £1,250 each.

Callum Macaulay finished joint sixth on 148 (77-71) to earn £350.

The three Saltman brothers did not have a weekend to remember.

Elliot finished joint 23rd on 155 (77-78); Lloyd joint 27th on 157 (77-80) and Zack scored 81-79 for 160 and a share of 31st place in a field of 44.

JIMMY GUNN MISSES ANOTHER CUT

Jimmy Gunn missed another cut on the Web.com Tour on Saturday. In the fourth event of the United States' No 2 pro tour, the Arizona-based Dornoch exile shot 71-75 for 146 - four shots too many to qualify for the final two rounds of the Panama Claro Championship at Panama City.
Gunn's second-round scorecard summed up how he is playing on the South American swing.
He reached the turn in 33 ... so far, so good.
Then came a horrific inward half of 42 shots with double bogey 6s at the 11th and 16th and single shots dropped at the 12th, 13th, 14th and 17th.

Panama City, Panama – Australian Aron Price fired a 1-under 69 Saturday and remained atop a packed leaderboard after 54 holes of the Panama Claro Championship, the fourth stop on the Web.com Tour’s 2014 schedule.
Price started the day tied with Scott Parel (75) at 6-under 134 and offset three bogeys with four birdies which was just enough to inch away from the field and post a 7-under 203 total, one better than rookie Carlos Ortiz (66), Aussie Steve Allan (67) and Texan Roland Thatcher (67).
Andrew Putnam (68), Brasil Champions winner Jon Curran (70) and Californian Mark Hubbard (70) are only two off the pace heading into Sunday’s finale which will start with 17 players within four shots of Price’s lead.
“My job today was to try and keep my patience, that’s absolutely the name of the game on this course,” said Price, who also held a one-shot lead after he opened Thursday with a 4-under 66. “I know it’s a cliché but most of this game is played in your head.”
With golf balls bouncing on concrete-like grass, the name of the game is finding a way to control distance both off the tee and into the green.
“I think anything under par is a good score out here,” said Allan, whose only bogey was a three-putt on the par-3, 6ith. “If you shoot even-par you haven’t played poorly.”
The early starters took advantage of kinder and gentler conditions and posted the day’s best rounds. Louisville grad Derek Fathauer, who shot a 59 in a practice round last week, carded the day’s best, a 5-under 65 which moved him into a tie for eighth.
Ortiz teed off well ahead of the leaders jumped into contention early. The 22-year old from Mexico had four birdies and an eagle and was the clubhouse leader at 6-under for most of the day.
“I wasn’t trying to shoot a particular score,” he said. “With the wind you never know how the scores are going to be. Anything under par I knew was going to be okay and I’ll take 4-under every day.”
Ortiz cashed in with two birdies and an eagle on his first four holes and then played even-par the rest of the way. The highlight of the day was his under-the-tree punch 6-iron from 185 yards that stopped five feet from the cup at No. 4.
“I wound up left in the trees and that’s all I could do,” he said. “I just needed to keep it low and under the branches and it just rolled up there.”

SAUCIER, Mississippi (AP) -- Billy Andrade hasn't played much competitive golf over the past four years. It was hard to tell on Saturday.
The 50-year-old Andrade had the low round of the day, firing a 7-under 65 to jump into a tie for the lead with Fred Funk after the second round of the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic presented by C Spire at Fallen Oak.
Colin Montgomerie is lying joint 12th with Bernhard Lanager after scores of 71-69 but the leading Brit is England's Roger Champion, a shot ahead of the Scot on 139 (69-70).
Sandy Lyle slipped back to T26 on 143 (70-73) while Sir Nick Faldo improved from a 74 to a 72 but is T50 on 146.
Andrade made nine birdies on Saturday, including a stretch of six over seven holes midway through the round. The exclamation point came on the final hole, when he drained a 20ft putt for birdie.
It's the second time in less than a year that Andrade has been in contention to win a tournament in the Magnolia State. He finished fifth at the Sanderson Farms Classic in Madison, Miss., last summer, which was easily his best finish in three starts on the US PGA Tour last year.
"I have no idea what it is about Mississippi," Andrade said laughing. "But right now, I absolutely love it."
Andrade is playing in just his fourth Champions Tour event. His best finish was eighth place at the ACE Group Classic in February.
Fred Couples started the day with a two-stroke lead, but fell into a tie for second place after shooting a 71. Jay Haas and Jeff Maggert both had 69 to join Couples one stroke behind the leaders.
Andrade has been mostly on the sidelines the past four years, working part time as an analyst for the Golf Channel. He's started just eight tournaments on the US PGA Tour since 2010 and said it's been nice to play several events in a row on the Champions Tour since he turned 50 to regain some consistency.

"It was kind of a swirly, windy day," Andrade said. "We didn't know if the wind was helping us or hurting us on some holes. But I got off to a nice start with a birdie on the first hole and then got into a nice rhythm."
Andrade and Funk are at 8-under 136 for the tournament. Funk shot a 67 on Saturday.
"I like coming here because it's a pretty difficult golf course and I like hard golf courses," Funk said. "When you're playing well, you try to get a little separation, although we're not too separated on the board right now."
There are 11 players within three shots of the lead.
Couples had a good start on Saturday, going 2-under through his first six holes. But he had 11 pars and a bogey the rest of the way to finish at 71, which snapped his streak of 12 straight rounds on the Champions Tour in the 60s.
The streak was one shy of Hale Irwin's record set in 1999.
"It was just a little sloppy," Couples said. "I didn't make a birdie on the back nine, so that's a lot of holes without making a birdie."
David Frost was disqualified Saturday after removing a stone in a bunker on Friday, which should have resulted in a two-stroke penalty. A Champions Tour official said Frost self-reported the violation after Saturday's round.
Frost was tied for sixth place at 6-under before his disqualification.
Because of expected rain, the tee times have been moved earlier for Sunday's final round.

JORDAN MILNE WITH A ONE-UNDER 68

Elgin amateur Jordan Milne won the North Scottish Golfers Alliance scratch championship for the Sir Hugh Mackenzie Trophy over his home course yesterday.

Milne headed the field by one stroke with a one-under-par 68.

A birdie at the fifth and bogeys at the first and seventh saw him out in one-over 35. Further birdies at the 10th, 11th, 13th and 17th were offset by dropped shots at the 12th and 16th for 33 home. 

Three more amateurs finished joint runners-up on 69 - Jeff Wright (Forres), Jordan Shaw (Boat of Garten) and Scott Dingwall (Grantown). 

Wright missed a short putt at the last and Shaw, who had a bag of six birdies, had a calamitous 8 at the 10th.
