NIGEL EDWARDS TO BE WALKER CUP TEAM CAPTAIN FOR THIRD TIME

FROM THE R and A WEBSITE
Nigel Edwards has been reappointed as the captain of the Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup team that will face the United States of America at Royal Lytham and St Annes Golf Club in the 2015 match.
Edwards (45) will also captain the GB and I team as they take on the Continent of Europe in the St Andrews Trophy match at Barseback in Sweden on August 29 and 30 this year.
Edwards, originally from Caerphilly, Wales, will serve as Walker Cup captain for the third time in succession as the GB and I team tries to win back the trophy in England next year.
He is the first person in the modern era to be invited to captain the GB and I team three times.
Nigel will also serve as captain of the St Andrews Trophy team for the third time in the biennial match as GB abd I look to reclaim the trophy after the Continent of Europe’s narrow 12½ – 11½ victory at Portmarnock in 2012.
A long-time member of Whitchurch Golf Club in Cardiff, Edwards played in four successive Walker Cup matches between 2001 and 2007. He was instrumental in GB and I’s 2003 victory at Ganton Golf Club, holing the winning putt, finishing undefeated and as the match’s leading points-scorer.
After twice playing on the winning side, Edwards completed a hat trick of wins by captaining GB and I to victory in the 2011 match at Royal Aberdeen. Defeated by the US side in the 2013 match at the National Golf Links of America in Southampton, New York, the GB and I team will look to reclaim the Walker Cup on home soil in 2015.
“I’m very proud to have the opportunity to captain the Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup team for a third time in 2015,” said Edwards. “It will also be a privilege to lead the St Andrews Trophy team for a third time this year.
"Both events have long histories and we will be aiming to win back the trophies. I am looking forward to continuing my involvement and using my past experience as both a player and Captain to make sure the players are prepared to play to the best of their ability.”
In addition to his Walker Cup successes, Edwards has been part of three victorious GB and I teams in the St Andrews Trophy, featuring in the winning 2002, 2004 and 2006 teams at Lausanne in Switzerland, Nairn in Scotland and Marianske Lazne in the Czech Republic respectively.
He captained the teams which lost to the Continent of Europe at Castelconturbia in Italy in 2010 and Portmarnock in 2012.
Edwards was also part of two winning European teams in the Bonallack Trophy match against the Asia-Pacific.
“Nigel has demonstrated great passion and pride for the Walker Cup and the St Andrews Trophy and we are very pleased that he has accepted the invitation to lead the GB and I teams both this year and next,” said Jonathan Plaxton, chairman of The R and A Selection Committee.
“He has proven to be very popular with the players and his experience in the amateur game will continue to be a tremendous asset as he prepares teams for the St Andrews Trophy and the Walker Cup.”
Edwards is currently Performance Director for England Golf, and previously served as Director of Player Development and Coaching at The Golf Union of Wales.

YORKSHIREMAN WINS TOP PRIZE OF 2,000 EUROS ON GECKO PRO TOUR EVENT

Yorkshireman James Maw didn't repeat his 10-under-par opening round of 61 today in the second and final round of the Gecko Tour 36-hole event, the Sovex Invitational at El Paraiso Golf Club, Malaga on Spain's Costa del Sol ... but he did not have to to win the 2,000 Euros first prize.
Maw from Abbeydale Golf Club, Sheffield had a one-under-par 70 for an 11-under-par total of 131.
That gave his challengers a chance to close the gap but Manuel Quiros (Spain) and another Yorkshireman, Marcus Armitage from Howley Hall, Leeds, came up one short of catching the leader.
Quiros had a day's best 63 for 132 and Armitage a 67 for the same total. They earned 875 Euros each.
Normally, Spaniards dominate the Gecko Tour prize lists but this was one event where the "Englanders" did well.
James Watts (Kingsway) and Carlos Balmaseda (Spain) tied for fourth place on 135, both returning 67s in the second round.
England's Lloyd Kennedy had a 65 for 136 and tied with Norway's Erik Tage Johansen (67) for sixth place.

TOP SEED RYAN EVANS BEATEN IN FIRST ROUND OF MATCH-PLAY ON ANOTHER VERY HOT DAY DOWN UNDER

Australian Men's Amateur Championship Round 1 Match Play
> Download the Match Play Draw and Results

Top seed Ryan Evans (Wellingborough GC, England), fell at the first hurdle of the match-play stages of the Australian men's amateur international championship at The Grange Golf Club, Adelaide.
Evans, playing the last of the 64 qualifiers, went down by 3 and 2 to Ryan Ruffels (Victoria) on another day of high temperatures - 46 degrees Celsius was the predicted temperature for mid-afternoon so the match-play ties, unusually, began with a shotgun start to try to get the players off the course before the searing heat arrived.
Last year's championship beaten finalist Geoff Drakeford (Victoria), home club member and 2013 Australian junior champion Anthony Murdaca (South Australia) and National Squad member Taylor MacDonald (Queensland) all progressed to the last 32.
MacDonald beat fellow Aussie national squad member Lucas Herbert (Victoria) 3 and 2.
A total of eight international players made it through to the next round including Americans David Snyder and Max Buckley.

Rafa Cabrera-Bello, in three-way tie for first-round lead in Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship

REPORT FROM EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Spaniard Rafa Cabrera-Bello, a previous winner on the European Tour’s ‘Desert Swing’, fired an opening round five-under-par 67 for a three-way share of the lead with Englishman Matthew Baldwin and France's Romain Wattel in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Classic.
Cabrera-Bello won the Omega Dubai Desert Classic in 2012, and he got off to an ideal start in his bid to lift another trophy in the Middle East, beginning 2014 with six birdies and just a single bogey on the opening hole.
“I have not competed for the last five weeks, and even though I have been practising and trying to recreate competition, it's not quite the same, so I'm pretty pleased with this start,” said the 29 year old from Gran Canaria.
“I've always said that I feel very comfortable here.  It reminds me a bit of home with the palm trees and the sand and the good weather, so I enjoy playing in short sleeves and in the sunshine.”
Both Baldwin and Wattel are searching for their maiden wins on the European Tour, each having finish as a runner up before, Wattel in the 2012 Omega European Masters in Switzerland and Baldwin in the Nelson Mandela Championship last month.
Baldwin mixed seven birdies with two bogeys in his round and he admitted that his morale was high following his career-best performance in South Africa.
“It's given me confidence to go on and keep challenging and maybe a win is around the corner, you never know. I want to win. There are plenty of guys that obviously  want to win as well, but I think looking at the year ahead, top 60  (on The Race to Dubai) is a target but definitely to get a win under the belt would be superb.”
Wattel did not drop a shot in his opening round, carding five birdies, and after spending the past week in Dubai practising, he feels his game is in good shape ahead of a big year.
“I just tried to play solid today,” he said. “Abu Dhabi is a good test all the time, so I’m really pleased with five‑under par and it's obviously really nice to start the tournament.”
Scotland’s Craig Lee finished his round by posting four birdies in a row before holing a 35ft par putt on the last to lie one shot back on four under par in a seven-way share of fourth place. He is joined by 2014 European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley, who threatened to upstage many of the hopefuls hoping to secure a place in his team for Gleneagles. The Irishman reached five under par himself after five birdies in his opening 11 holes, but dropped a shot on 16th – when he chipped in for bogey after finding the water - for a round of 68.
Dutchman Joost Luiten, who finished tied third in last week’s Volvo Golf Champions, is also on four under par, along with the South African pair of George Coetzee and Dawie Van der Walt, Scotland’s Marc Warren, and Portugal’s José Filipe Lima.
There was a positive start to the new year for former World No. 1 Rory McIlroy who started 2014 with a bogey-free two under par round of 70, the same score as Englishman Luke Donald and three-time winner Martin Kaymer, while reigning Open champion Phil Mickelson opened with a one over par 73 – carding 17 straight pars before dropping a shot at the ninth, his final hole of the day.
Sergio Garcia, with only one birdie, shot a four-over 76 but Paul Lawrie could do no better than an 80.
Paul had a double bogey 6 at the 13th and a triple bogey 7 at the 16th in halves of 37 and 43. He would need to shoot in the low 60s in the second round to have any chance of making the cut.
SERGIO GARCIA SAYS THE ROUGH
IS DANGEROUS
REPORT FROM GOLF.COM WEBSITE
Phil Mickelson didn't have much success with his new driver in the first round of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, failing to make a single birdie in a 1-over 73 to sit six shots behind the leaders.
Mickelson made 17 straight pars in his first round of the year before a bogey on his last hole, joining a number of big names who struggled on the opening day.
"I can't recall the last time I had a round without a birdie," Mickelson said. "But didn't make a bogey there until the last."
Mickelson's playing partner Rory McIlroy carded a 70 while Henrik Stenson had four bogeys in a 74 and Sergio Garcia complained about the rough being "dangerous" after a 76.
Mickelson said before the event that he was driving better than ever after getting a new driver from Callaway Golf that he said could turn one of his weaknesses into a strength.
However, he only hit five of 14 fairways on the Peter Harradine-designed course.
"This first round, I was a little tentative, played a little cautious, didn't trust my swing too much," Mickelson said. "I haven't been out in competition for a while but then it was good to get my feet wet."
McIlroy was upbeat after showing signs of the same form he displayed at the end of the 2013 season, which earned him the victory in last month's Australian Open in Sydney.
"I feel the benefit of ending last year well and then starting off this year with a lot of hard work, it's sort of showed off," McIlroy said.
"Today was my first competitive round since the start of December, and I drove the ball as well as I have done in a long time."
Martin Kaymer, a three-time winner in Abu Dhabi had a costly double bogey on the 14th and also finished with a 70.
Garcia said he hurt his shoulder while playing the Pro-Am on Wednesday, and said he was troubled by the thick rough -- needing treatment on his 13th hole.
Garcia said the rough is "very, very thick," and that "they have cut it from from the green back to the tee, and by doing that the ball nestles down quite a bit.
"You just have to hit it so hard into the ground to get it out and when you're not 100 percent it doesn't help at all," Garcia said.
"I would say that it's dangerous and hopefully nobody else will get injured because it could happen to several guys this week."

MONTY AND HARRINGTON PREDICT BRIGHT NEW YEAR FOR RORY McILROY

Colin Montgomerie and Padraig Harrington are predicting a return to winning ways for Rory McIlroy in 2014.

But the European Tour veterans have conflicting views on whether Tiger Woods will surpass Jack Nicklaus's record of 18 major victories.

Montgomerie and Harrington, who boast nearly 70 professional wins between them, discuss McIlroy's prospects in an interview to be broadcast on BBC Radio 5 live later today (Thursday). They say they expect the 24-year-old to continue his assault on golf's record books, despite his difficult 2013.
And Montgomerie, winner of a record eight European Tour Order of Merit titles, maintains the Northern Irishman is "far too talented" not to start winning again on a regular basis.
"He's the most talented player to emerge since Seve Ballesteros. Seve fell out of his pram playing golf and Rory did the same thing. That's not going to go away," said the Scot.
Colin Montgomerie on Woods's major prospects
McIlroy failed to win in 2013 until his penultimate event, the Australian Open in December - but Montgomerie does not foresee similar struggles in 2014.
"I think it was a blip year," he said. "A lot was happening and I think Rory will get back to winning ways."
Three-time major winner Harrington also anticipates a rapid revival. "I've said it is possible Rory could compete with Jack's record," he said. "The reason is that time is on his side. He started winning majors at 22 so that gives him a good bit of time.
"Rory has won two in the last three years. That's a good stat. If he wins more in the next three years then that really becomes some stat," added the 2007 and 2008 Open champion.

As for Woods, Montgomerie believes this is a crucial year if the 14-time major champion is to overhaul Nicklaus's record. The Scot points out that the world number one, who has not won a major since 2008, has previously won at three of this year's major venues.
Woods won the 2006 Open at Hoylake  and the 2000 US PGA at Valhalla, and has won four Masters green jackets at Augusta.
"He also came a close runner-up the last time the US Open was staged at Pinehurst," Montgomerie said.
"I thought last year was important for Tiger Woods to win a major. And he's running out of time, there's no doubt."
Irishman Harrington is more optimistic about Woods's prospects. "No-one has got into contention more consistently than Tiger Woods has in recent years at major tournaments," he said.
"I do agree the less he wins, then the harder it gets. He is starting again - it's like he's never won one.
"I just believe, though, that because he has competed so much, if he gets one then the others will come reasonably soon after and he will get there."

Rory McIlroy says he wants to make up for a disappointing 2013 by winning two majors this year
But Montgomerie says Woods' strategy is flawed in the modern game. "The trouble with Tiger is that he just has not been aggressive enough over the weekends.
"He has played safe golf, he hasn't attacked. The safe game now has gone. This is a very aggressive game we play now.
"When he first came on the scene he was 30, 40 yards past everyone - now he's 30 yards behind. That's a big difference and therefore he cannot win majors playing safe anymore."
In the interview, recorded at last week's Volvo Golf Champions in Durban, the two European Ryder Cup stars also discuss their own careers.
Harrington admits to having "lost some of the buzz" while Montgomerie says he has been revitalised by turning 50 and joining the Seniors' tour.
They also discuss the Ryder Cup and Harrington says the time has come to end the right of home captains to have a say in course set-up.
