COORE AND CRENSHAW TO DESIGN COURSE FOR BANDON DUNES DEVELOPER

FROM THE GOLF DIGEST WEBSITE
By GEOFF SHACKELFORD
Mike Keiser's next great project is15 miles south of Wisconsin Rapids, around 167 miles northwest of Milwaukee.
The Bandon Dunes developer is creating an 18-hole course in conjunction with 120 founders who paid a refundable $50,000 a piece for lifetime access, though it's clear, based on his comments, that Keiser has not acceded creative control, announcing his decision in a rare press release.
"I have purchased the land and The Founders and I have decided to build the first of four golf courses at Sand Valley," Keiser said in the release.
"The first course will be designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw (Bandon Trails, Cabot Cliffs). Design work will begin as soon as the snow melts and we plan to be open for play in Spring 2016."
Coore and Crenshaw have vaulted to the top of Keiser's favourite-architect's list, even though for months it seemed this would be a Tom Doak project.

FITZPATRICK QUITS US UNIVERSITY TO BE FULL-TIME AMATEUR IN ENGLAND

NEWS RELEASE FROM USGA
Reigning U.S. Amateur champion Matthew Fitzpatrick, pictured above, announced today that he is leaving Northwestern University, Chicago - Luke Donald's alma mater -  to pursue his amateur golf career full-time at home in England. Fitzpatrick spent one semester at the Big Ten college
“I very much enjoyed my experience at Northwestern,” Fitzpatrick said in a news release on the Northwestern website.
“The people, the school and the great city of Chicago all exceeded my expectations. I want to thank head coach Pat Goss, assistant coach David Inglis and my team-mates for everything they did for me.
“Based on the opportunities I have right now from a golf perspective, I feel it is important to dedicate 100 percent of my time to the game and have decided to withdraw from university in the U.S.”

Fitzpatrick, 19, entered Northwestern as the No. 1 player in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR).
In August, he defeated Oliver Goss, of Australia, 4 and 3, in the 36-hole U.S. Amateur final at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., becoming the first Englishman in 102 years to hoist the Havemayer Trophy.
The victory earned Fitzpatrick exemptions into the 2014 U.S. Open at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club and the Open at Royal Liverpool (Hoylake), as well as an invitation to the 2014 Masters Tournament.
He also earned the 2013 Mark H. McCormack Medal for being No. 1 in the WAGR at the completion of the U.S. Amateur.
His 2013 season also included being the low amateur at the Open at Muirfield and representing Great Britain and Ireland at the Walker Cup match at the National Golf Links of America in Southampton, New York, where despite the 17-9 defeat by the USA, he posted a 3-1-0 overall record.
In 2012, Fitzpatrick claimed the British boys championship.
During the autumn season, Fitzpatrick ranked second on the Northwestern team with a 71.63 stroke average, compiling three top-20 and two top-10 finishes in five events.
“Matt is a bright and talented young man who has an incredible future ahead of him in the game of golf,” said Goss, who also coached two-time GB and Walker Cup team member and former world No. 1 player Luke Donald at Northwestern.
“We wish him nothing but the best in his career.”

TOP PORTLETHEN PROSPECT SAM KILOH LEAVES AMATEUR RANKS TO BE A TOUR PRO

Sam Kiloh ... turned down US college scholarship offers

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com

First Craig Lawrie, now Sam Kiloh, another of
the North-east's best teenage amateur prospects, has turned pro to seek some of the fame and fortune that Paul Lawrie has achieved over the past two decades.
The main difference is that Paul was trained as a PGA assistant by the late Banchory Golf Club pro Douglas Smart. Craig and 19-year-old Sam are both sidestepping that route so that they can start playing golf for money immediately.

Kiloh made his debut as a pro in Wednesday's North-east Alliance at Inverallochy where he finished joint fifth, two shots behind the amateur winner, John Duff.
Sam is working at the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre until the end of January but will not have a playing attachment to the Centre.

"I'm going to be playing on a mixture of the Europro Tour and the EPD Tour," said Kiloh whose first hurdle in the pro ranks will be get through the EuroPro Tour Qualifying School at an English venue in March.
"My original plan was to go to an American college on a scholarship but I turned down the offers I had. I decided that I wanted to play golf professionally instead because I would enjoy it more and that's what I want to do in the future - play golf around the world which the EPD Tour especially will allow me to do."

Sa had his 19th birthday at the end of last November.
Sam had a +1 handicap as he left the amateur ranks. Career highlights so far?
"Winning the North-east District Order of Merit in my last year as a junior and winning the Portlethen Golf Club junior championship twice.the last," said Kiloh whose family home is at Portlethen.
"Also winning the North-east boys' stroke-play championship at Auchmill and finishing
runner-up in the North-east youths championship at my home club, Portlethen, with rounds of four-under-par 68 and 72."
Kiloh holds jointly the Alford course record of seven-under 62 which he achieved in a junior open tournament.

MATSUYAMA PULLS OUT OF SONY OPEN ON HAWAII

HONOLULU (AP) --- Hideki Matsuyama has withdrawn because of a wrist injury from the Sony Open which tees off today at the Waialae Country Club, Hawaii.
Matsuyama, the first rookie to win the Japan Golf Tour money title, was playing for the first time since he won the Casio World Open in Japan when he teed it up in Wednesday's pro-am.
He then pulled out with soreness in his wrist.
Matsuyama  was the sixth-highest ranked player in the field at No. 23 in the world. Matsuyama had said his wrist was getting better, but that he had not been able to practise much going into the first full-field event of the year on the US PGA Tour.
One man's misery is another's good fortune. He was replaced in the Sony Open by Robert Streb.
Inverness-born, Florida-based Russell Knox is in the field.
Honolulu is at least 10 hours behind UK time so allow for that if you want to follow the live scoring service on the US PGA Tour website

JACQUELIN SETS PACE WITH A FIVE-UNDER 67 IN VOLVO TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS

REPORT FROM EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Raphaël Jacquelin finished with back-to-back birdies for a five-under-par 67 to lead by one stroke  at the end of the first round of the Volvo Golf Champions from defending champion Louis Oosthuizen in The European Tour’s opening event of the 2014 calendar year.
Frenchman Jacquelin, who earned his place in the 36-man ‘tournament of champions’ field by winning the 2013 Open de España after an epic nine-hole play-off, showed few signs of rust in his game following the winter break, despite the windy conditions at Durban Country Club, in South Africa.
After opening with five straight pars, Jacquelin birdied the sixth and eighth holes before the turn, then picked up further shots on the 14th, 17th and 18th holes for a five under par round of 67.
“I managed to get everything right today,” he said. “It was a bogey‑free round, and that was the key - to go every round bogey‑free on this course. It's a new year and it is pretty good way for me to start, so that's great.”
Oosthuizen took a little longer to get back into the swing, dropping a shot on the first hole, but the South African hit back with five birdies for a round of 68, as he attempts to become the first player to successfully defend the Volvo Golf Champions title.
“It was a rough start, and it’s not the easiest five holes to start the day with in that wind, but, I got into a rhythm quickly at about the third, or fourth hole and felt comfortable in the wind,” he said.
“I think level par, or one under, for me would have been a nice start just to get the tournament going.  But once I turned, when I got to the 10th, I really felt comfortable out there.  I still left quite a few birdies out there, and I didn’t really make any putts, but, I feel good.”
Northern Ireland’s Darren Clarke, benefitting from a new fitness regime, shares third position with Frenchman Victor Dubuisson after both players carded opening rounds of 69.
Scotland senior Colin Montgomerie mixed six birdies with four bogeys in his round of 70 and shares fifth position with sixth other players, including the European Tour’s 2013 Rookie of the Year, American Peter Uihlein, who recovered from a triple bogey 7 on the first hole.
Surprise of the day was a seven-over-par 79 by Thomas Bjorn who is already rated a certainty for a Ryder Cup team place at Gleneagles in September.
