MARTIN LAIRD TIED EIGHTH
- WATNEY LEADS AT THE WYNDHAM
GREENSBORO, North Carolina -- Nick Watney fully expects his lead to be gone on
Sunday when he and Brad Fritsch tee off at 2:05 p.m. ET in the final
group of the final round at the Wyndham Championship.
"So it's not like I'm protecting anything tomorrow," Watney said. "Just more of the same. Hopefully make a few birdies and keep the mistakes down and have a chance coming down to the last few holes."
Watney, a five-time PGA TOUR winner, earned sole possession of the one-stroke lead at 14 under when he rolled in a 19-footer from the fringe on the 18th hole at Sedgefield Country Club late Saturday afternoon. But there are 12 players within four strokes of his advantage and another four within five.
The good news for Watney, though, is that the third-round leader of the Wyndham Championship has gone on to win five times in the six years since the tournament returned to Sedgefield Country Club.
That said, the Donald Ross design has been extremely generous this week -- averaging under par each day, including 69.208 on Saturday. Sedgefield has yielded 100 more birdies than bogeys for the week, along with 28 total eagles, including two holes-in-one in the third round.

Heath Slocum, the overnight co-leader, is tied with Freddie Jacobson, who joined him at 12 under with a 66 on Saturday. Brandt Snedeker and Webb Simpson, both former winners of the Wyndham Championship, are another stroke behind and tied with Scott Langley.
The group at 10 under includes Bill Haas, who played collegiately at Wake Forest, Andres Romero, Bo Van Pelt, Martin Laird, Kevin Kisner and Camilo Villegas, who held the first-round lead after a 63.
"You can't really go out and protect anything here," Jacobson said. "Not that I'm in the lead after today but you got to go out there and keep firing like I did today, just keep giving myself chances and hopefully run a few putts in tomorrow and give it a chance to bring it home."
Slocum, who entered the week ranked 158th in the FedExCup and now stands tantalizingly close to playing his way into the FedExCup Playoffs at No. 126, agreed.
"I like my position and I think it's going to take a really good one tomorrow," he said. "They're so jam-packed up top. I feel like I'm more than capable."
Snedeker's 2007 victory came in the tournament's finale at Forest Oaks where he made up five strokes on Sunday with a 63. He also has two top-10s at Sedgefield, though, and he knows Sunday will be a go-for-broke kind of final round.
"You never like being two back with ten other guys," Snedeker said. "You know what you're going to have to do. You have to go out there and shoot good tomorrow. The great mentality, go out there and be aggressive and don't hold back.
"Give it everything you got."
Martin Laird is in joint eighth position going into the final round. He has shot 65-66-69 for 10-under 200 and is four shots behind leader Watney is this low scoring event.
