MARK WHO? IS GIFTED SENIOR OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP BY BERNHARD LANGER

FROM THE DAILY TELEGRAPH WEBSITE
By ALASTAIR REID, at Royal Birkdale
Mark Wiebe emerged from the shadows, in every sense, to take victory in the Senior Open Championship at Royal Birkdale on Monday morning, pipping Bernhard Langer to the title at the fifth extra hole of a sudden-death play-off.
Senior Open 2013: Mark Wiebe defeats Bernhard Langer in five-hole play-off at Royal Birkdale

Wiebe, 55, an Oregonian with just two US PGA Tour wins to his name, struck when Langer bogeyed the 18th after leaving his approach short.
The pair had played the first two holes of their play-off the previous evening, but fading light ended play and they were obliged to return to the course at 8am, the first time in its 27-year history that the tournament had gone into a fifth day.
On the first hole on Monday, Langer passed over a golden chance to clinch victory when he missed a 12-foot birdie putt.
However, the German, a two-time Masters champion, said that the critical error had come on Sunday evening when, after two lengthy rain delays, he wasted a two-shot lead by double-bogeying the 72nd hole after failing to escape from a greenside bunker.
“It really was my tournament to win or lose coming down 18,” said 55-year-old Florida-based Langer.
“In the play-off anybody can win. It comes down to one good shot or one bad shot. And that’s what happened. Mark is a very deserving champion.”
Wiebe, who had been struggling with a back problem ahead of the tournament, had earned his play-off place with a superb final round of 66. His victory earns him a place in next year’s Open Championship at Hoylake, as well as a winner’s cheque of £207,000, but immediately he was looking forward to relaxing.
“I’m a little tired,” Wiebe admitted. “I tried to play the play-off like I was playing the tournament. I have never been in a play-off in a major championship either. I just tried to play the golf course as good as I could.
“I’m glad it’s over, and I’m honoured. I just was luckier today and last night than Bernie, I guess. I think it’s always better for both players had there been a birdie to win the play-off instead of a bogey.”
It was the second year in succession that Langer had surrendered a 54-hole lead in the Senior Open. On the Ailsa Course in Turnberry, he led by one going into the final day, but finished a long way down the
leaderboard as Fred Couples surged to victory. However, Langer said he could take confidence from the way he had played at Birkdale.
Langer said: “What I’ll take away from this is my tremendous ball-striking. I really drove the ball well this week, hit a lot of good iron shots and thought I played pretty smart – except for the 72nd hole. Otherwise, I played some of the best golf of my whole life.”

HOME BLAIRGOWRIE HOPES NEIL, CAMPBELL CLEAR FIRST HURDLES

FROM THE SCOTTISH GOLF UNION WEBSITE
The home fires are still burning; on a day that produced a few surprises, two of the event favourites – Blairgowrie pair Bradley Neil and Glenn Campbell – progressed to the second round of the Fairstone Scottish Amateur Championship.
With 256 hopefuls seeking to emulate the likes of Colin Montgomerie, Stephen Gallacher and Dean Robertson by claiming title glory in Perthshire, Blairgowrie would love to crown a home champion, this their first-ever staging of the SGU’s flagship event.
Campbell started proceedings at 6.45am against Greg Telfer from Prestwick St Cuthbert and had to draw on all his local knowledge to emerge victorious.
The 40-year-old, a member at Blairgowrie for over three decades, found himself two down after the opening three holes, not helped by a pulled drive at the par-5 opening hole of the Lansdowne Course.
But the 2005 champion dug deep and stayed on course for a round four clash with defending champion Grant Forrest after earning a 4&3 win.
“I’m looking to have a good run and hopefully local knowledge will help,” said Campbell, who reeled off hole wins at 5, 7, 8 and 10 to turn the tide.
“The course is in as good a condition as I’ve seen it in a long time – it’s fantastic.”
Campbell, who has fellow Blairgowrie member and SGU Boys Selectors Chairman Barrie Douglas on the bag this week, added: “Five Blairgowrie players started the event, so hopefully some of us can go far in the tournament. It’s good for the local interest and for our members.”
Neil was among the later starters on a busy opening day of 74 ties, coming through 3&2 against Grant Minnes of Kirkintilloch. "It was far from my A-game," said the Scottish Boys champion. "There is a lot of pressure and expectation on me this week and I just have to relax."
Forrest, meanwhile, fresh from playing The Open at Muirfield, was comfortable in a 4 and 3 win over Lanark’s Jamie Lamb.
“My game is feeling pretty good and I’ll just take things one shot at a time,” said the 20-year-old, who played with Mark O’Meara at The Open after coming through local final qualifying. “I had loads of chances but didn’t hole too many.”
Elsewhere, Paul Lawrie’s son Craig edged a tight battle with another Blairgowrie player, Nick Barr, to progress at the 19th.
“It was the only time I was ahead in the whole match,” said the Deeside youngster.
However, last year’s beaten finalist, Richard Docherty from Bearsden, exited at the first hurdle to David Donaldson of Bruntsfield Links, losing a terrific match at the 24th.
Kilmarnock Barassie’s Euan Walker, who represented Scotland at the recent European Boys’ Team Championship, was also a casualty, going down to Nairn’s Cameron Nelson 3&2, as was the former Scottish Boys champion, Craig Howie of Peebles.
But the likes of Scott Borrowan and Daniel Young, both seeds and much-fancied, progressed, as did the 2001 champion, Barry Hume. James Ross and Lawrence Allan also booked spots in round two, the latter playing Neil on Wednesday morning.
The Lansdowne Course is in terrific shape, so please come along and enjoy the Perthshire action. Entry is FREE all week!

BIRTHDAY BOY MCCREADIE LEADS BY TWO - WILL DELAY CELEBRATIONS

Buchanan Castle tour pro Jason McCreadie will be 43 years old on Tuesday - but, as leader by two shots at the halfway stage of the £50,000 Gleneagles Scottish PGA Championship - he will delay any celebration until the end of the 72-hole tournament over the Kings Course.
On a perfect day for low scoring - no wind and soft, holding greens -  McCreadie added a 66 to his opening 64 for a 12-under-par aggregate in the Tartan Tour's flagship event.

It doubled his first-round advantage over Gareth Wright after the Welshamn followed up his first-round 65 with a 67.

But the pair might not be left to battle it out for the title on their own in the final two rounds after Aberdonian Greg McBain and Greig Hutcheon (Banchory) both surged up the leaderboard.

McBain, winner of the Paul Lawrie Invitational at Deeside last year, was three-over with five holes to play in his first-round 71.

But, helped by a hot putter, the 29-year-old bagged nine birdies second time out in carding an eight-under 63, the best of the week.

It catapulted him into third on eight-under, three ahead of Hutcheon after the Tartan Tour No 1 signed for a 64.

Illuminated by an eagle at the tenth, it helped repair an opening 73 that included a quadruple-bogey 8 at the third.

But McCreadie, a two-time Northern Open winner and , is still the the 2008 winner of the SPGA title, is the man they all have to catch in Perthshire.

"I hit a couple of bad ones today but got away with them, which is was you need," said the leader, who reckons a a win could be written in the stars.

He's working with Rowallan Castle-based Ross Aitken, who helped Graham Fox claim this title at the same venue 12 months ago.

"That's maybe an omen, you never know," added McCreadie with a smile.

The cut fell at four-over, with 37 players making it through to the final two days. The third round starts at 7.30am with McBain, Wright and McCreadie out in the last group at 9.30am.
Gullane's Emma Fairnie, only the third woman to play in the championship since Meg Farquhar in 1933 and Heather MacRae just a year or two ago, failed by two shots to survive the cut but
she gave it her best shot.
Emma can be proud of a second-round, one-under-par 70 for 148.
She covered her last 10 holes in four under par with birdies at the ninth, 10th, 14th and an eagle 3 at the last. She had a bogey at the 17th but it did not make all that difference as shwe missed the cut by two.

CANADIAN OPEN IS SNEDEKER'S SECOND US TOUR WIN OF SEASON

FROM THE US PGA TOUR WEBSITE

In the final round of the RBC Canadian Open from Glen Abbey Golf Club, Brandt Snedeker wins at 16 under.
OAKVILLE, Ontario -- Brandt Snedeker won the RBC Canadian Open on Sunday for his second US Tour title of the year, closing with 2-under 70 for a three-stroke victory.
Snedeker took the lead Saturday after second-round leader Hunter Mahan withdrew when his wife went into labor, and held on in the breezy final round at Glen Abbey.
"Just ecstatic right now," Snedeker said. "This is a tournament I said early on in my career I wanted to win just because my caddie (Scott Vail) is actually from Canada and it's his national open. It meant a lot to him, meant a lot to me. Third-oldest tournament on TOUR and it's got some great history to it, and now to put my name on that trophy it means a lot."
Mahan's wife, Kandi, gave birth to daughter Zoe Olivia Mahan early Sunday in Texas.
"Zoe will be getting a very nice baby gift from me," Snedeker said. "I can't thank Kandi enough for going into labor early. I don't know if I'd be sitting here if she hadn't. But that is a way more important thing than a golf tournament. I missed a golf tournament when my first was born, and it was the best decision I ever made. I'm sure Hunter would say the same thing."
Snedeker finished at 16-under 272. The six-time PGA TOUR winner also won the AT and Pebble Beach National Pro-Am in February. Now third in the FedExCup standings, the reigning champion is in position to become the first FedExCup winner to defend his title at the TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola the following year.
"It feels great to get a win," he said. "To validate all the hard work I've put in over the past three months where I haven't played my best and know that I'm working on the right stuff and able to hold up under some pretty serious pressure this afternoon. To win a tournament like this with those pivotal holes coming down the stretch means a lot."
Snedeker had two birdies and a bogey on the front nine. He birdied the par-4 10th to move to 16 under, but gave the shot back on the par-3 12th. He birdied the par-5 16th and parred the final two holes.
"I hung in there really well and made the key putts I needed to and I was able to survive," Snedeker said. "That's what today is all about."
Dustin Johnson, William McGirt, Matt Kuchar and Jason Bohn tied for second.
FEDEXCUP
Johnson was tied for the lead after a birdie on No. 16, then drove out of bounds and hit the lip of a fairway bunker en route to a triple-bogey 7 on the par-4 17th. He finished with a 70.
"I was playing really well," Johnson said. "Really confident, swinging the driver really good. So you know, it's a driver hole for me, and I just blocked it a little bit. Made a poor swing. ... Not too happy, but I felt really good with my golf game. ... It's nothing, nothing to worry about. I'll go get them next weekend."
McGirt had a 68, and Kuchar and Bohn shot 71.
David Hearn was the top Canadian, shooting a 73 to tie for 44th at 4 under.
Mike Weir tied for 49th at 3 under after a 72.
"I'm playing fine. Just missing too many short putts," Weir said. "I missed a number the last couple days inside 6, 7 feet, just missing way too many of those. You need those to keep your round going sometimes and I just didn't capitalize when I had opportunities."
Pat Fletcher, born in England, was the last Canadian winner, taking the 1954 event at Point Grey in Vancouver. Carl Keffer is the only Canadian-born champion, winning in 1909 and 1914. Albert Murray, a Canadian also born in England, won in 1908 and 1913.
The 2014 tournament will be played at Royal Montreal.

KEVIN TWAY WINS PLAY-OFF ON WEB.COM TOUR

FROM THE WEB.COM TOUR WEBSITE
By Joe Chemycz, Web.com Tour staff
BOISE, Idaho – Rookie Kevin Tway rolled in a six-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole to beat Spencer Levin and win the Albertsons Boise Open. Tway rallied late and posted a 7-under 64 at Hillcrest Country Club to force the overtime session with Levin, who was first in the clubhouse at 23-under after carding a 63.
The two players returned to the uphill, 395-yard 18th for the playoff, the third in four weeks on the Web.com Tour but the first in Boise since 2005.

Levin was making only his second start since hand surgery last fall and misfired on his 10-foot birdie effort. That opened the door for Tway to collect his first professional win of any kind.
“My hands were shaking a little bit,” he said. “It was on the same line I had in regulation and I just wanted to make sure I got it to the hole.”
The win was worth $139,500 and moved the former Oklahoma State All-American to No. 6 on the Tour money list with just four events left on the regular season schedule. His next stop will be the PGA TOUR in 2014.
“This means a lot because I’ve struggled since turning pro,” he said. “This really hasn’t sunk in yet. I’ve always wanted to play on the PGA TOUR since I was a little kid.”
Sunday’s finale turned out to be a shootout as the field came within an eyelash of setting a scoring record for the third consecutive day. The scoring average was 68.080 (par 71) and only five of the holes played above par for the week.
Leading money-winner Michael Putnam (63), Canada’s Bronson La’Cassie (65) and 54-hole leader Philip Pettitt (67) wound up at 22-under and tied for third.
Ben Martin (63), Hunter Haas (64), Matt Bettencourt (65), Jamie Lovemark (66), Jason Allred (66) and Will Wilcox (67) shared sixth place at 20-under 264.
Tway moved into contention with an 8-under 63 Saturday and was two shots off the 54-hole pace set by Tennessee’s Philip Pettitt (67/T3). He knew he’d be nervous for the final round so he called his father for some advice.
Papa Bob, who won eight times on the PGA TOUR including the 1986 PGA Championship, was in England at the Senior Open Championship.
“He said to take it just like any other day,” said the Tour’s fourth rookie winner in 2013. “He said to play like I was in 50th place and that I needed to move the leaderboard.”
Tway got close with some early birdies but it seemed everyone was making birdie runs and the leaderboard was lighting up like pinball machine.
“I really didn’t pay attention to the boards,” said Tway. “I looked at number 15 and saw someone was at 22-under. I knew I had to make some birdies coming in.”
Tway was 19-under and actually four back of Levin, who played the final 51 holes without a bogey.
The rookie put the petal down and rolled in a a 10-foot birdie putt at No. 15, a 30-foot eagle putt at No. 16 and another 10-footer for birdie on the par-3, 17th to tie Levin, who had finished 30 minutes ahead of him.
When Tway missed a 20-foot birdie putt on the final hole, the stage was set for the fourth playoff in the tournament’s 24-history.
Final-Round Notes
-- Weather – Mostly sunny. High of 90. Wind – calm before 2pm then NW 5-10 mph.

Russell Knox, with scores of 69, 59, 68 and 69 for 19 under par 265 finished joint 12th.

ALEXANDER TAKES ON THE ROXBURGHE

First, apologies to Braehead’s Rikky Alexander for overlooking his entry in the Scottish Boys Stroke Play Championship at the Roxburghe golf course last week.
Rikky had a pretty good performance, finishing 31st equal in a high quality field with a 9 over par score (76, 72, 77) on the tough course.
Bob MacIntyre, however, didn’t find it tough and was the winner with an 18 under par score (66, 66, and 66). Bad weather cut the tournament to three rounds.

Those golfers with sharp eyes may have picked up the record breaking win by a 14 year old Thai amateur in a 72 hole professional event, beating many experienced players with a 13 under par score.  His reaction to winning was to phone his friends to catch up on his school homework, after being given the week off school ….. WOW!

                                      WEATHER WIPE-OUTS

Unfortunately the 36 hole County Championship which should have been played at Alloa on Sunday was a casualty of heavy rain and a rescheduling will be made. Details will appear soon in the local Golf Clubs.

The 36 hole Central Scotland seniors at Kilmacolm lost one round due to the weather.  Locals were a bit down the field. Tulliallan’s Phil Dempsey scored 72, and Bob Stewart a 74, while the winner Ronnie Clark scored a 65.

Bob is in the field for the prestigious Seniors Open Amateur Championship to be held at Royal Aberdeen from Wednesday 7th till Friday 9th August. In the field of 144 top seniors, Bob tees off at 3.52 on the Wednesday.

                                   FIXTURES COMING UP

Entry sheets for the Clackmannan County Autumn Meeting at Tulliallan on the 17th August are now on Club notice boards.  This event will round off the County season and will determine the aggregate trophies for 2013.

   Other local fixtures
Saturday, August 3: Boys Open (Alva) ; Williamson Open (Braehead)
Sunday, August 4: Alpha Trophy (Alloa); Junior Open (Tillicoultry).
Thursday, August 8:  Senior Open  Alloa
Golfers should always check with the Golf Clubs for fixture changes and late entries.
