DANIEL YOUNG WINS CAMERON CORBETT VASE FOR SECOND YEAR IN A ROW

Perth player Daniel Young (Craigie Hill) retained the Cameron Corbett Vase - the latest SGU 72-hole Order of Merit event - at
Haggs Castle Golf Club this evening in an exciting finish.

Young, who won the prestigious trophy in a tournament reduced to 36 holes last year because of flooding, showed this time round that he had the class and the nerve to make most of the running over four rounds.
Joint overnight leader after Saturday rounds of 71 and 66, Young went three shots clear of the field on his own with a third-round 68 for 11-under-par 205.
His nearest rival was James White (Lundin) who had scored 72-68-68 for 208. 
Young, playing two groups behind White, appeared to be cruising to a repeat victory until White staged a grandstand finish with birdies at the 17th and 18th for a three-under-par 69 which enabled him to post a clubhouse target of 11-under 277.
Young, 21, winner also of the Leven Gold Medal last August, stood on the 18th tee knowing he needed a birdie to win by one shot, a par to figure in a play-off against White.
Daniel kept cool under pressure and sank a tricky 2 1/2ft putt for a birdie and a round of one-under 71 for a winning total - by one stroke - of 12 under par 276.
Scott Crichton (Aberdour), like Young a former US college circuit player - Daniel completed four successful years at Lynn University, Boca Raton, Florida in May - finished third, having started the tournament with a 66 and closed it with a 72.
Crichton won the Cameron Corbett Vase - one of the oldest tournaments on the amateur golfing calendar - in 2011 but an outward half of three-over 39 in his final round meant he had just too much ground to make up over the closing holes.
Jamie Savage (Cawder), winner of last weekend's East of Scotland Open, achieved a top-10 finish with a share of fifth place on 285. A third-round 76 killed his winning chance after being only two shots off the pace at halfway.

DANGEROUS WEATHER HOLDS UP LAST ROUND OF GREENBRIER CLASSIC

The decision was made due to "dangerous weather" in the area. It has yet to start raining but the clouds are heavy and the wet stuff is on the way.

WESSELINGH WINS PLAY-OFF AT BAD RAGAZ PGA SENIORS OPEN

Paul Wesselingh picked up his second win of the season after a play-off victory over Kevin Spurgeon at the Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open today.

A birdie at the third extra hole was enough for Wesselingh to take the title, having shot a six under par round of 64 to haul himself into contention and post nine under.

He had started the final day in a tie for 11th and five shots behind the 36 hole lead held by Santiago Luna and Gary Wolstenholme, but seven birdies, an eagle and three bogeys put Wesselingh in the box seat.

However, Spurgeon carded three birdies in his final four holes to draw level, and after the pair halved the first two extra holes in par, it was Wesselingh’s birdie the third time round on the 18th that proved enough to take the title.

“I started off five behind and set myself a target of 10 under to win, but you’re never sure if that’s going to be enough,” explained Wesselingh. “But I started off so well, and being five under par through six holes was incredible, and that’s when I found out I was leading.

“I felt pretty comfortable after that, until I was walking down 14 and I saw I still had a two shot lead. It might not have been a good idea to know that, and straight afterwards I made a couple of bogeys at 14 and 15. But then I made two tremendous putts on the next two, before a silly bogey on 18.

“Then in the play-off I missed a three footer on the second extra hole to win, but on the next I holed from 25 feet and Kevin missed from eight to tie.

“I’m just delighted. I love it here in Switzerland, it is a special place, and I even used to come here on holiday. They make us feel so welcome, and it is a great course and a special win.

“To win twice in a year is good anyway, but now I’m off to America tomorrow for the US Senior Open and looking forward to that. It is really exciting, and has opened up a whole new chapter in my life.”

This is Wesselingh’s third European Senior Tour title in just 19 appearances, and vaults him to the top of the Order of Merit after four events in 2013.

Pedro Linhart (68) and Carl Mason (67)finished three shots adrift in a tie for third, while Bob Cameron (70), Juan Quiros (70) and Wolstenholme (73) all finished a shot further back at five under par.

Luna, who had lead after two rounds alongside Wolstenholme, finished four under par after a 74 on Sunday saw him fall back into tie for eighth.

STEWART MAKES TOP 20 IN CHALLENGE TOUR'S GERMAN EVENT

Duncan Stewart earned 2,210 Euros for a joint 16th place finish in the Bad Griesbach Challenge event on the European Challenge Tour in Germany today.
Stewart, from Grantown on Spey, had rounds of 69, 68,74 and 68 for an aggregate of nine-under-par 279 at the Hartl Resort course.
He finished 10 shots behind the winner of the 27,200 Euros top prize, Italian Andrea Pavan who shot 68, 67, 66 and 68 for 19-under-par 269, winning by a shot from another Italian, Marco Crespi.
Raymond Russell, the only other Scot to survive the halfway cut, finished joint 64th on 290 with scores of 73, 69, 73 and 75. He earned 434 Euros.

PAVAN, CRESPI MAKE IT AN ITALIAN 1-2

Andrea Pavan has won his third Challenge Tour title with  a one-stroke victory at the Bad Griesbach Challenge Tour by Hartl Resort.

The 24 year old Italian finished on 19 under par after a 68 today to edge out compatriot Marco Crespi, who three putted the last hole for a bogey, having charged into a share of the lead with just two holes to go.

However, when Pavan needed it most, he made a clutch birdie two at the 17^th and was able to make a bogey down the last and still take the title.

He got off to the ideal start in the final round with a birdie at the par four first, before another at the third that extended his advantage in Bad Griesbach.

A bogey followed at the fourth, but he bounced straight back with another birdie two holes later, and when he reeled off further red figures on 11 and 12 his advantage was two with just the daunting final three holes to play.

The finish to the Beckenbauer course in Germany has caught a number of people out in all four rounds, but Pavan handled them with aplomb and in doing so, put the finishing touches on a fine victory that moves him up to second on the Challenge Tour Ranking.

“It feels great as it is tough to win, and you can’t control that,” said Pavan. “But today was a battle, I played very well, and I hit so many good putts, and to make that birdie on 17 was great with Marco making a move behind.

“My caddie just told me to stay patient, to keep playing the same way I have been, and the putts will drop, and they did, so it’s great. It’s not easy to win out here, and to get a win at this time of the season it gives me a lot of confidence.

It had looked like plain sailing for Pavan for much of the final round, with the Italian a couple in front for the majority of Sunday, but when Crespi hit top gear on the back nine he really applied the pressure to his countryman.

Nine birdies in the final round  saw Crespi bound up the board, but he dropped a couple of shots at crucial times, and that ended up being the difference.

Victor Riu had led after the first two rounds, and played the final day alongside Pavan, but level par on Sunday was not quite good enough for the Frenchman to contend for the title, and he finished in a tie for third alongside Norway’s Knut Borsheim.

 Graeme McDowell continued his remarkable winning streak by holding off playing partner Richard Sterne to secure a third title of the year at the Alstom Open de France today.
McDowell carded a closing 67 at Le Golf National to finish nine under par, four clear of South Africa's Sterne, who had been only one behind until bogeys at the 16th and 17th.
Sterne eventually did well to par the 18th for a final round of 71 to make sure of outright second, with 2007 winner Graeme Storm and Spain's Eduardo de la Riva a shot behind.
McDowell missed the cut in last week's Irish Open but reaped the rewards of staying on at Carton House over the weekend to work on his game, the first prize of €500,000 taking him less than €30,000 behind Justin Rose at the top of The Race to Dubai.
It should also lift the former US Open Champion from ninth to sixth when the Official World Golf Rankings is updated on Monday, with The Open Championship at Muirfield just around the corner.
The 33 year old Ulsterman began the day tied with Sterne and made the perfect start with a birdie from 15 feet at the opening hole, but Sterne responded with a two-putt birdie on the par five third, where McDowell was lucky not to find a water hazard with his drive.
Both players then birdied the fifth before a poor drive cost McDowell a bogey on the seventh, while the par five ninth produced matching birdies for the final group from a greenside bunker.
McDowell was quick to get back on level terms at the start of the back nine, holing from nine feet for a birdie on the tenth and then missing from a similar distance on the next.
Sterne dropped his first shot of the day on the 12th after driving into heavy rough and coming up short of the green with his approach, and he looked certain to also bogey the 13th as well.
The South African committed the cardinal sin of taking an iron for safety only to push his tee shot into a water hazard, but after taking a penalty drop he hit his third shot to 20 feet and holed for an unlikely par.
Luck certainly appeared to be on McDowell's side as he pulled his tee shot on the 16th but saw the ball take a fortunate bounce away from the heavy rough and kick 90 degrees right.
That left him with a relatively simple up and down, but he needed more good fortune after pulling his par putt and the sheepish grin after it somehow found the left edge of the hole told its own story.
Sterne had called for a "G-Mac bounce" after also pulling his tee shot but was not so fortunate and a bogey four gave McDowell a two shot lead with two to play, the Northern Irishman then making certain of victory with a superb birdie on the 17th.
McDowell, in his last eight tournaments has missed the cut five times and won the other three.

"It certainly motivated me a lot the last few weeks. The US Open was a tough one to take and missing the cut in Ireland last week; it made me more hungry to want to be in positions like I was this afternoon.

“To win a title as prestigious as the French Open over a course that I think is the best we play on The European Tour, is very special and something I will remember for a long time.” 

McDowell was quick to extol the virtues of Le Golf National as a Ryder Cup host venue, with the Versailles course set to host the biennal match between Europe and the United States in 2018.

“It's going to be a phenomenal venue come 2018,” he said. “I think the guys, Jean Van de Velde and his team, have done a fantastic job here.  This golf course has got better and better every year and I think we are in for one of the greatest Ryder Cups of all time in a few years' time, and I just hope I can be here for that.”

BRYAN INNES' NINTH MURCAR LINKS RECORD TITLE

FORMER Scotland international Bryan Innes, pictured above, has won the Murcar Links Golf Club men's championship for a record ninth time. He beat Corin Stewart by 4 and 3 in the 18-hole final on Saturday to win the Fairfield Challenge Cup.p.

For the second year in a row, Calvin Cheyne is the Murcar Links junior club champion with Keir MacArthur winning the junior handicap championship.
