ROCK AND UIHLEIN SHARE HALFWAY LEAD IN IRISH OPEN

 REPORT BY EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Robert Rock is relishing the opportunity of avenging his 2009 Irish Open play-off defeat, with the Englishman sharing the halfway lead with American Peter Uihlein at Carton House, two shots ahead of his conqueror of four years ago, Shane Lowry.

Rock was involved in one of the most dramatic finishes in Irish
Open history at Co Louth Golf Club, but he lost out in a play-off to
home favourite Lowry, then a 22 year old amateur.
While it was not to be for the 36 year old Belfry player that day, he
has since gone on to greater things, winning the Italian Open in
2011 before a stunning victory at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf
Championship after emerging on top from a final day battle with
Tiger Woods.
Rock admitted that his duel with Lowry was almost on a par with
that lucrative victory in the Middle East, and he cannot wait to
sample the atmosphere of the huge Irish crowds once again, this
time at the pristine Carton House Golf Club.
“I'll never forget that day, playing with Shane,” said Rock, who
signed for a six under par second round 66 at Carton House for a
nine under par total.
“That was really tough. That was almost harder than Abu Dhabi,
because I did feel like I had some people on my side in there! They
were both comparable, although they were different pressures.
“I started great really today,” he continued. “I've been putting a
little bit better lately so to start the day with a five‑foot putt for a
birdie was nice, and I drove it well for the rest of the round. Overall
it was a steady day, no bogeys and a tidy short game to keep it
going. I was never really out of play apart from the 18th tee shot
when I hit it in the bunker.”
Uihlein, meanwhile, continued his magnificent form carding a four
under par 68 to move to the front four weeks after his maiden European Tour victory, a result which was followed by a tied 12th
finish at the BMW PGA Championship, a top 25 at the Nordea
Masters and a top ten at last week’s BMW International
Championship.
“I've been playing well the last couple of days and executing really
well from the rough,” said the 23 year old. “You’re going to miss
some fairways out here with the wind blowing so you have to hope
for some good lies and then hole a few good putts and I did that.”
Lowry, who is Carton House’s Touring Professional, added a two
under par 70 to his opening round 67 to stay within two shots of
the summit on seven under par, alongside Sweden’s Oscar Floren
(71), Joost Luiten (70) of The Netherlands, Spaniard José María
Olazábal (63) and Ricardo Santos (66) of Portugal.
On a day when the wind caused some difficulty at the Country
Kildare venue, the cut fell at level par meaning that the four home
Major winners Darren Clarke, Padraig Harrington, Graeme
McDowell and Rory McIlroy all missed the cut.

LLOYD SALTMAN LOSES LEAD TO FRITTELLI

REPORT FROM EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
A superb birdie-eagle finish helped South African Dylan Frittelli assume the halfway lead at the European Challenge Tour's Kärnten Golf Open presented by Mazda.
The 23 year old from Johannesburg enjoyed a glittering college career in the USA, culminating in him holing the winning putt at the NCAA Championship finals last year to guarantee his ‘Texas Longhorns’ Team from Texas University the most prestigious college title in America.
Now making his way as a professional on the Challenge Tour, Frittelli finds himself leading the Lothians' Lloyd Saltman by a single stroke at the Jacques Lemans Golf Club, with Frenchman Edouard Dubois, England’s Billy Hemstock and Ireland’s Peter O’Keefe a further stroke back on nine under.
Roland Steiner leads the home challenge on eight under par after the Austrian added a three under 68 to his opening 66, but it was Frittelli’s grandstand finish that grabbed the headlines as he birdied his 17th hole before smashing a driver and a four iron to 15 feet before rolling home his eagle putt.
“Home in 31 was pretty good considering I bogeyed the easiest hole on the course on the front nine,” said Frittelli.
“It doesn’t help when you go for the superhero play with a hybrid from a severely sloping lie, but that’s what I did on four and I got my punishment with the bogey.
“But apart from that there was a lot of good stuff out there today and it is always a very satisfying way to end a good round with a birdie-eagle finish. That will always turn a decent round into a very good one and that’s how it turned out for me today.
“I am really looking forward to the weekend and getting out there and trying to get over the line. I have been playing nicely recently and have been putting myself into decent positions but I seem to be almost putting a little bit too much pressure on myself.
“There have been a few occasions where I have been three or four off the lead going into the weekend and have probably pushed too hard to try and close the leaders down, but obviously it will different for me tomorrow being the leader and I feel comfortable in that position. Hopefully I can just focus on my game and stick to my game plan because it feels good at the moment.”

ALEX SALMOND WILL NOT GO TO OPEN AT MUIRFIELD BECAUSE ON BAN ON FEMALE MEMBERS

He has previously criticised the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews to address its failure to offer Dr Louise Richardson, the principal of St Andrews University, membership.
Although Dr Richardson is not a keen golfer, it was pointed out that membership of the Royal and Ancient was bestowed on her male predecessors at the head of Scotland’s oldest university as a matter of course.
Mr Salmond is a keen golf fan but has faced criticism after spending spent £470,000 of taxpayers' money leading a delegation to last year’s Ryder Cup in Chicago.
Two months before that he charged the public purse for a week’s stay at an exclusive hotel ear Inverness while last year's Scottish Open was being staged nearby.
His refusal to attend the Open may help his standing with female voters, whom opinion polls indicate are particularly opposed to independence.
Sources close to the First Minister confirmed he was not going to Muirfield and reiterated his stance on men-only golf clubs.
A spokesman for Mr Salmond said he will again attend the Scottish Open at Castle Stuart near Inverness and insisted last year’s stay helped secure hundreds of jobs.
“The Scottish Open is being held the week before the Open Championship, and the First Minister will not be at Muirfield, but he wishes everyone involved all the best for a great tournament,” he added.
“His views on single-sex golf clubs are well-enough known, but we are sure this year’s Open will be another fantastic advert for Scotland, and we expect tourism minister Fergus Ewing to attend for the Scottish Government.”
All-male clubs which host the Open, such as Muirfield, Royal Troon, Royal St Georges, Sandwich, and the Royal and Ancient – which has become a separate entity to the game’s ruling body now known simply as the R and A – have come under criticism for the make-up of their membership.
In July 2008 St Andrews-based Ladies Golf Union lifted a ban on taking female tournaments to men-only clubs, such as Muirfield and another Open venue Royal Troon.
At the time, the First Minister remarked: “It might encourage them [the clubs] to change their ways. I’d rather not go any further, but I think it’s pretty clear from the comment I made where my sympathies lie.”
Earlier this year Maria Miller, the Culture Secretary and Minister for Women and Equality, urged single-sex clubs to think “long and hard” about retaining their membership policy.
The United States Golf Association does not allow clubs with single-sex policies to host the US Open. Last year, one of the last bastions of male membership – Augusta National, home of the US Masters – bowed to pressure and finally admitted its first lady members.
The club responded to a welter of criticism by inviting former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and the South Carolina financier Darla Moore to become the first women to wear the famous green jackets which signify membership.
No one at Muirfield was available yesterday to respond to Mr Salmond’s comments. Peter Dawson, the chief executive of the R and A, has previously defended clubs’ right to decide their own membership policy.
