ROOKIE HENLEY LEADS BUT RUSSELL KNOX MISSES HAWAII CUT

FROM THE US PGA TOUR WEBSITE
By Wire reports, PGATOUR.COM
HONOLULU -- Two days into his PGA TOUR career, Russell Henley put himself in the record book.

Henley putted for birdie on every hole Friday on his way to a second straight round of 7-under 63, giving him a two-shot lead over fellow rookie Scott Langley and Scott Piercy in the Sony Open.

RUSSELL KNOX MISSED CUT BY ONE SHOT. SEE END OF ARTICLE.

Henley was at 14-under 126, breaking the 36-hole tournament scoring record by two shots.
"It's pretty surreal," Henley said.
In the first full-field event of the season, the rookies were leading the way. All they did on another windy, warm day along the shores of Oahu was trade places atop the leaderboard. Langley opened with a 62 and followed that with a 66. That typically would be enough to stay in the lead.
Langley said he tried to stay aggressive, and then he felt he had no choice. He birdied his last three holes to reach 128.
Piercy looked as though he had a chance to catch Henley in the afternoon, even as a gentle wind turned into nothing more than a breeze, but he spent most of his time grinding over pars. A birdie on the par-5 ninth, his last hole, gave him another 64.
That means Henley and Langley will be paired together for the third straight day, this time in the last group going into the weekend.
The college graduates have been good friends for the past few years, each helping when the other was going through a bad spell. They have been linked together since they shared low amateur honors at Pebble Beach in the 2010 U.S. Open.
"It's never easy to back up a really good round, I kind of got off to a little slower start," Langley said. "But it was certainly nice to finish the way I did and kind of get back in it with Russ. He played so well, and I was just trying to keep pace as much as I can. To finish that way was really good."
The previous 36-hole record at the Sony Open was 128 by five players, most recently John Cook in 2002.
Matt Kuchar made eagle on the 18th hole to finish off a 63. He was three shots behind.
That the scores were low -- six players had a 63 or better on Friday -- was no surprise. Oahu hasn't received much rain over the last several months, and in tropical sunshine, the fairways were running fast and the greens were pure. And for those coming over from a windy week on Maui, it truly felt like paradise.
"Coming from last week, it feels really easy out there," Kuchar said. "This course, as simple as it seems, it's one of the tougher courses on TOUR. If you're not playing well, you're going to make some bogeys. ... I understand the wind is supposed to really die down over the weekend, so I certainly expect low scoring. The course is in great shape, greens are beautiful, so there's going to be a lot more birdies and foot has definitely got to be down on the pedal."
Dustin Johnson won't get a chance to match Ernie Els as the only players to sweep the two Hawaii events. Johnson, who won last week at Kapalua, withdrew after playing nine holes because of the flu.
"I feel like I'm coming down with whatever my caddie's got," said Johnson, who was 3 over at the turn. "Just not feeling well. Stomach hurts, headache, tired."
Chris Kirk made a pair of tap-in eagles -- a 5-iron into the wind to 3 feet on the ninth, a 7-iron with the wind to 2 feet on the 18th -- for a 62 that put him at 10-under 130 along with Tim Clark (66) and Charles Howell III (64).
Pat Perez, working on his new attitude of seeing silver linings instead of black clouds, ran off three straight birdies early in his round for a 63 and was another shot back.
The last rookie to win his PGA TOUR debut was Garrett Wilson when he captured the Tucson Open in 2001, the same week of the Match Play Championship in Australia. The Sony Open in Hawaii is only at the halfway point, which made the debut of the rookies no less impressive.
Henley took over the lead for the first time with a shot into 8 feet to a front pin on No. 2, his 11th hole of the day. With birdies on the fifth and sixth holes, it looked as though he might pull away when he stretched his lead to four shots.
Langley came to life with a 7-iron and a 20-foot birdie putt on the seventh, then a sand wedge into the par-4 eighth and more work than he wanted on the par-5 ninth, when he got up-and-down for birdie from near the hospitality tent to the right of the green.
"This feels like a Monday qualifier," Langley said of the low scores, not to mention the company he has been keeping. Langley and Henley were born two weeks apart. They became friends after Pebble Beach when they flew together to Royal Portrush for the Palmer Cup, and they helped each other on the practice range when their games were in need of repair. The difference was their road to the PGA TOUR. Henley won a Web.com Tour event while still at Georgia, and then he won twice on that tour last year to easily finish among the top 25 on the money list.
Langley, a former NCAA champion from Illinois, went through a bad patch last year when he finished last in the second stage of q-school and had no status. He kicked around the smaller tours, tried a few Monday qualifiers, and then made his way through q-school and earned his card with two shots to spare.
They're neck-and-neck going into the weekend, both hopeful they ride their momentum.
Piercy didn't know much about them, and he wasn't alone.

"It's Russell something and Langley? I think Russell won when he was in college, right?" Piercy said. "Hey, they're playing well. I think I played in five final groups as a rookie and didn't come through. There's a learning curve. But maybe their curve is quicker than mine."
Russell Knox, the only Scot in the field, missed the cut by one shot, despite birdieng the 16th and 18th for a two-under-par 68.
Earlier the Jacksonville Beach, Florida-based, Inverness-born player had deviated from par only twice - abirdide at the third and a bogey at the seventh.
Knox's two-round total of one-under-par 139 was one stroke too many to survive the cut.

EUROPE RYDER CUP SKIPPER FOR GLENEAGLES TO BE NAMED QUICKLY ON TUESDAY.

FROM THE DAILY TELEGRAPH WEBSITE

By JAMES CORRIGAN
José María Olazábal’s successor as Europe Ryder Cup captain will be announced immediately after a vote is taken next week in order to avoid the betting controversy which blighted the appointment of Colin Montgomerie.

Montgomerie's appointment as Ryder Cup captain in 2009 emerged after a flurry of wagers on him

“If we come to a decision in Abu Dhabi we will have to announce it that night,” said Thomas Bjorn, the chairman of the 15-man Tournament Players Committee which will meet in the United Arab Emirates capital on Tuesday evening.

The Tour is desperate not to have a repeat scenario of the farce in 2009 when Montgomerie’s appointment came out thanks to a series of bets forcing his price to tumble in the hours after the meeting.
“It was a bit daft, if not unseemly,” Montgomerie told Telegraph Sport. “We were told to keep it hush but then from being a rank outsider I was suddenly huge odds-on. We could do without a recurrence.”
Bookmakers last night welcomed the move. “It’s definitely wise,” said a Ladbrokes spokesman. “We took the market down a while ago as we didn’t want to leave ourselves exposed.”
Bjorn will have the casting vote if there is a deadlock. The race for Gleneagles 2014 seems to be between Darren Clarke and Paul McGinley, with Montgomerie also mentioned after United States reinstated a former winning captain in Tom Watson.
Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy has set up a foundation to help children’s charities around the world. For each of his first six events in 2013, his bag will carry the name and logo of a children’s charity and will be auctioned.

EWAN SCOTT FINISHES FIFTH DOWN UNDER

Scottish youths champion Ewan Scott from St Andrews finished a creditable fifth in a strong field for the Australian Master of the Amateurs championship at Royal Melbourne Golf Club today (Friday).
Scott, who was beaten finalist at Murcar Links last April in the Paul Lawrie Foundation Scottish boys match-play championship, shot scores of 68, 71, 73 and 73 for a total of 285
He finished six shots behind the 17-year-old winner, Viraat Badhwar from Queensland who had rounds of 64, 74, 68 and 70 for 279 and a two-stroke victory from runner-up Brady Watt (West Australia).
Badhwar is Austratlia's top junior and he demonstrated his potential by returning a final round of 70 in high winds.
Brady Warr had led by four strokes with a round to go.

OOSTHUIZEN LEADS BY ONE FROM JAMIESON AND JAIDEE

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Former Open Champion Louis Oosthuizen had his wishes come true in Durban - not just a 64 to lead the Volvo Golf Champions, but the bonus of a new excavator for his farm.
A 30 foot birdie putt on the final green took the 30 year old South African into a one stroke halfway lead over Scotland's Scott Jamieson - also round in 64 - and Thai golfer Thongchai Jaidee.
The digger was then presented to Oosthuizen because he had been promised it rather than a car if he was part of the winning team on the day with Jaidee and amateur Colin Ledwith, a two-handicap member at Canons Brook in Essex, England.
They were level with Darren Clarke, Thorbjørn Olesen and their partner with one to play and once on the putting surface Oosthuizen said: "I walked around to the guys and said 'Listen, we need one of these to go in'.
"I was fortunate enough to make the long one - and then Colin made one as well.
“I'm walking away with a nice gift for the farm. That's going to be a lot of fun next week playing around with it!”
For the final two rounds it is back to professionals only and Oosthuizen, Jaidee and Jamieson are way out on their own as they head into the weekend.
There is a six-stroke gap to the six players in joint fourth place on five under - England's Danny Willett, Scot Paul Lawrie, Irishman Shane Lowry, Frenchman Julien Quesne, Indian Jeev Milkha Singh and Dane Thomas Björn.
Current Open Champion Ernie Els is among those one further back following a disappointing 72.
Jamieson is trying to make it a double triumph in the city, having last month achieved his first European Tour success in the Nelson Mandela Championship presented by ISPS Handa at Royal Durban.
That qualified him for a place in the elite 33-man winners-only field at Durban Country Club even though the event had to be reduced to 36 holes because of rain.
After more downpours there was a two-hour delay before the second round today, but Jamieson must have taken it as an omen and promptly birdied five of the first eight holes.
Then came three more in a row from the 13th and he led on his own following a 12 foot putt at the 17th, only for Oosthuizen to birdie the last two and overtake him on 12 under.
"If it rains for a couple more days maybe that's a good thing for me," the 29 year old Glaswegian said.
This is his first-ever week as a member of the Official World Golf Ranking's top 100 and another victory now would put him into contention for a place in next month's 64-man WGC-Accenture Match Play in Arizona.
“Definitely comfortable in this environment,” he added. “In terms of the quality of the field, this is certainly deeper than what I managed to win with, but all you can do is play the golf course and definitely want to go higher after winning.”
Jaidee, leader by three after his opening 65, added a 68.
“I hit a lot of greens today, just a couple of holes missed the putts,” he said. “In two days I’ve really enjoyed my golf here and look forward to the next two rounds.”

EUROPEAN CHALLENGE TOUR 2013 SCHEDULE RELEASED TODAY

NEWS RELEASE FROM EUROPEAN CHALLENGE TOUR
The 2013 European Challenge Tour schedule, released today, continues the Tour’s mission to unearth the world’s top young golfers and bring the game to all corners of the globe with 25 tournaments confirmed in 17 different nations.
Players such as Nicolas Colsaerts, Branden Grace and Martin Kaymer have passed through its ranks in recent years and the announcement of such a healthy schedule for the Tour’s 25th anniversary season once again illustrates its continuing diversity.

The pioneering spirit of the Challenge Tour is illustrated by two new tournament destinations in 2013, Oman and Ukraine, while a return to Germany after a five year absence provides another welcome boost to the calendar.

The visit to Ukraine comes in September when the Superior Golf & Spa Resort in Kharkov is the venue for the Kharkov Superior Cup, a week before the Challenge Tour ‘Major’, the lucrative Kazakhstan Open, returns to Nurtau Golf Club for the ninth edition of the tournament.

The following month marks another historic breakthrough for the Challenge Tour as it makes its debut in Oman for the National Bank of Oman Classic at Almouj Golf, The Wave, near Muscat, the week before the season once again reaches its traditional climax at the Challenge Tour Grand Final.

Prior to that, July’s Hartl Resort Challenge will provide a long-awaited return to Germany, a country whose Challenge Tour events have produced some great champions including Martin Kaymer, Joost Luiten and Richie Ramsey.

Alain de Soultrait, Director of the Challenge Tour, said: “Once again, the Challenge Tour continues to grow year on year, despite increasingly difficult economic times, and we are delighted to announce such a healthy schedule which provides challenges as well as rewards for all our players, something which make this Tour the perfect preparation for The European Tour.

“Not only that, the Challenge Tour is still breaking boundaries in golf with the announcement of our tournaments in the Ukraine and Oman. Our voyages into new countries have produced huge results in recent years, illustrated perfectly last year by Espen Kofstad who became the first Norwegian to win the Rankings.

“Another very pleasing statistic in that regard is that a Czech player - Marek Novy - has a category for the first time in 2013 and we look forward to his homecoming at the second edition of the D+D Real Czech Challenge Open.”

The Czech tournament, at Golf and Spa Kunĕtická Hora in Dritec, has moved from its traditional October slot to the beginning of June and is part of the strong summer across the continent of Europe for the Challenge Tour with tournaments in Portugal, Belgium, Spain, France, Scotland, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Finland and Norway, following on from the start of the season which features the Gujarat Kensville Challenge in India in January and the 44th staging of the Barclays Kenya Open in February.

The Tour will touch down on European soil for the first time in April for the Challenge de Madrid, which will for the first time be played at elEncíngolf outside the Spanish capital, while the Kärnten Golf Open in June moves to the Jacques Lemans Golf Club in St Veit-Längsee.

A month earlier, in mid-May, the prize fund for the Madeira Islands Open on The European Tour will once again count towards the Challenge Tour Rankings while the dual-ranking event at Aa Saint Omer Golf Club returns under a new name, the Najeti Hotels et Golfs Open.

“The mix of established tournaments alongside new events is excellent and is the very essence of the Challenge Tour,” said De Soultrait.

“We very much value our long term partners and that is shown by the 44th staging of the Barclays Kenya Open and the 25th edition of the Rolex Trophy in Switzerland, but we are equally excited to be returning to Germany for the first time in five years for the inaugural Hartl Resort Challenge, in addition to the new venues for the Challenge de Madrid and the Kärnten Golf Open.

“Of course, without the support of our various sponsors and federations the continued success of the Challenge Tour would not be possible and we thank them for the part they play in producing the golf stars of the future. We are very much looking forward to 2013.”
