OFF-FORM LEE WESTWOOD SACKS COACH PETER COWEN

FROM THE DAILY TELEGRAPH WEBSITE

By JAMES CORRIGAN
Lee Westwood has wasted no time in making the radical changes he believes are necessary to recover his
The Englishman has parted company with his long-time coach and appointed a new caddie in the wake of his missed cut at the US PGA.
The split with Pete Cowen is a surprise. The Yorkshireman initially guided Westwood through the successful start of his career and, after leaving him and suffering a dramatic slump, the Worksop golfer returned to Cowen in 2006.
Since then, Westwood has won a dozen titles, racked up seven top threes in the majors and reigned as world No 1.
But after flops in the last two majors, Westwood decided to act. “Lee admits he needed to shake things up because he’d lost his focus and his enthusiasm a bit, because he wasn’t getting the rewards for his long game,” said his manager, Chubby Chandler.
Westwood cut a frustrated figure when he left Kiawah Island with an eight-over total, despite having led the tee-to-green stats. His short game has once again ruined a campaign which started so promisingly with a tie for third at the Masters.
He was in contention at the US Open, before he eventually came 10th, but since the French Open at the start of July he has bafflingly lost his renowned consistency. Chandler explained the rational behind the decision to cut ties with Cowen, the much-vaunted adviser whose clients have won three majors in the last three years.
Parting company with Pete is because he’s passing on advice to Lee, but he’s not around to follow it through,” he said. “Lee is very structured about going to the gym, but not about practising – so when Graeme [McDowell] and Pete’s other players are booking him, Lee is leaving it late and is having to work around them.
Pete was here for two days with Graeme this week when Lee wanted to work with him, so it just wasn’t working out. Lee’s the sort who needs someone standing over him, making him hit chip after chip and telling him what he’s doing wrong. It’s not like he’s got the yips or anything – he just needs to improve his technique.”
Westwood will try out a different coach in a five-day trial beginning the end of this week.
“Lee’s not going to have a long-game coach for the foreseeable future — there’s nothing wrong with that part of his game, as you could see from the fact that he topped the greens in regulation stats here,” he said.
“But we’re going to put a few things in place – including a new short game coach. This man is not one of the usual suspects – it’s someone a bit different.
“Lee needs to try something different with his chipping and putting – he’s never been the greatest chipper, but his putting also needs work, he knows that. When you miss the cut after that, it gets even more frustrating, and that probably brought matters to a head.”
Westwood will have a new man on the bag when he plays at next week’s Barclays Championship in New York. Michael Waite has been filling in for Billy Foster since he injured a knee, but Westwood will now use the Zimbabwean Mike Kerr for two months up to and including the Ryder Cup in Chicago. Kerr works for Alvaro Quiros, but the Spaniard is taking an extended break.

Rory McIlroy takes a three-shot lead into the final round of the US PGA Championship at Kiawah Island after carding a five-under 67 in a rain-delayed third round.
The Northern Irishman hit five birdies in eight holes before a thunderstorm prematurely ended Saturday's play.
Successive birdies on the 15th and 16th lifted him to seven under, ahead of Sweden's Carl Pettersson on four under.
Tiger Woods sank three birdies on Sunday morning to reach two under.
Woods had tumbled down the leaderboard on Saturday after carding three bogeys in just seven holes before his round was curtailed.
The former world number one resumed his third round with an eight-foot par putt on the eighth, which he missed to drop to level par for the tournament.
However, he rolled in birdies on the 11th, 13th and 16th to get to three under before dropping a shot on the short 17th after failing to get up and down from a bunker.
The mid-round break did not help Fiji's Vijay Singh, who had led with Woods on four under at halfway.
A couple of birdies had helped him move to six under and share the lead with McIlroy but he played the back nine in four over par to join Woods on two under.

BROBERG WINS AGAIN ON CHALLENGE TOUR

CHALLENGE TOUR NEWS RELEASE
Kristoffer Broberg produced one of the most incredible finishes in recent European Challenge Tour history when the Swede holed a 60 foot birdie putt in the second play-off hole at the Norwegian Challenge to clinch a second win in as many weeks.
Broberg and Alvaro Velasco had finished regular play tied for the lead on 22 under par at Byneset GK, after a two under par 70 and three under par 69 respectively, before two pars at the first play-off hole meant they returned to the 18th tee to do it all over again.
Velasco, the 2010 Challenge Tour Number One, gained the advantage from the tee the second time out when he found the middle of the fairway while Broberg found the rough on the right. When the Swede’s second shot came up 60 foot short of the pin, the Spaniard looked odds on favourite to clinch a third Challenge Tour title.
He caught his approach thick, however, and could only land the ball five foot nearer to the flag than Broberg, who proceeded to roll the ball into the back of the cup from a seemingly impossible distance before Velasco’s birdie putt missed to the right by a matter of inches.
Incredibly, Broberg’s Challenge Tour record now reads: three appearances - tied ninth place in the first, a win at last week’s Finnish Challenge and another title this week.
“It was amazing,” said the 26 year old, who had already won twice in Norway in just over a year on a Nordic satellite tour. “I’m so happy right now. I was so tired from the last two weeks I almost just wanted it to be finished but to finish it like that was just incredible.
“That’s definitely the biggest putt I have holed in a position like that. My drive was a little to the right on the final play-off hole and I hit a six iron but I didn’t strike it like I would have liked to. Even then, I still didn’t let myself think that I wasn’t going to win.
“I played so so up until the play-off. I made a lot of pars and didn’t really get going at any time. I was constantly hitting the ball past the pin and then two putting a lot.
But I can’t believe I've won two in a row, it’s just amazing. The key has been confidence. After last week’s win I came into this week with a lot of confidence and feeling I could win the tournament.”
Both Broberg and Velasco made cagey starts to the final round, playing in the last group alongside former Ryder Cup player Oliver Wilson, as they each parred the opening six holes. Broberg picked up a birdie at the par five seventh hole while his Spanish counter-part gained two shots at the sixth and seventh to move into the tied lead.
Broberg continued to rack up the pars – nine in a row from the eighth hole – while a bogey at the 12th and a birdie at the 16th for Velasco meant the two players were neck and neck stepping onto the 17th tee.
They both birdied the short par five before a par each at the final hole meant it would go to extra holes and, while Velasco was disappointed to lose out in such a fashion, he showed nothing but admiration for Broberg’s winning putt.
“There is nothing you can do or say about that,” said Velasco. “It was just a great putt. I tried to tie but I was too far from the hole so it was difficult. I was between clubs for the second shot and I tried to smash the shorter club but I caught too much grass.
“It’s still a positive week. I wasn’t playing too well recently and then I had a break and this week I showed that I’m back so I’m looking forward to the next few weeks.
“It’s been up and down since I won the Challenge Tour Rankings in 2010 and now I can take positives from this week and get my confidence back.”
Argentina’s Rafa Echenique finished in third place a shot back after closing with a six under par round of 66 while experienced campaigners Steven O’Hara (65) and Wilson (68) finished in a tie for fourth place on 20 under par.

HUGH HUNTER'S CLACKMANNAN COUNTY NEWS

IT’S A GOOD TIME FOR WEE COUNTY GOLF
With Alva’s Lawrence Allan representing Scotland in the Boys Home Internationals last week, and Dollar’s Scott Borrowman in the Scottish team for the Men’s Home Internationals, it should give Clackmannanshire locals a sense of pride in their golfers.
Allan played in all three Boys International matches at County Louth just north of Dublin---- a 7000 plus yard layout that has been used for the Irish Open.  His statistics of two wins from six matches do not do justice to his fine play over the three days.
All his matches were close and of a very high standard.  His play in the closing holes was impressive, and he can be proud of the many good shots played under a bit of pressure.
It was a good start in the foursomes against Wales--- partnered by Scottish champion Craig Howie, the pair recorded a 1 hole win thanks to a 10ft putt on the 18th
from Lawrence.  However he fell in the singles by 2/1 to Welsh player Delon Hau.  Allan had to wait till day three in the English match to record another win in his singles. by 2 and 1.
The Scottish team finished runners-up to England with Ireland and Wales in 3rd and 4th place.
This week sees Lawrence competing in the British Boys Championship to be held at Nottingham.

This week its Scott’s turn in the Men’s Home Internationals at Glasgow Gailes, played to the same format as the boys.

AUTUMN COMES EARLY FOR COUNTY GOLF.
The last county Meeting is being played at Alloa Golf Club on the 18th August.  Late entries are still available for this event which will decide the  2012 season trophies.  With some adjustment needed from some Club competitions, the current positions are as follows.

HARROWER TROPHY ( Aggregate of Spring, Summer, Autumn meetings)  Dollar’s Darren Hulston leads on 145 from Braehead’s Allan Watson on 147.  Further back are S Horne (149), M Robertson (150)  R Benvie  (151).

ORDER OF MERIT.   Darren Hulston leads on 375 points from Allan Watson (265), J Aitken (215) , D Findlay(180) and M Robertson (125).

A BUSY WEEK FOR THE WATSONS

The family of Bobby Watson the 1973 Scottish Boys Champion were in action last week. Playing from Muckhart, Eilidh Watson played in the Girls Home internationals at Radyr in Wales.  Thanks to a fight back from Eilidh when she won the last three holes for a halved match, the Scottish team secured a draw in their first match--- that proved to be their best as they suffered defeats in the next two.
Robert Watson played in the English Under 14’s Championship at Blackwell Golf Club in Worcestershire--- he recovered from a bad opening round of 84, recording two final rounds of 75 and 77 to finish in the middle of the field.

CHRIS WOOD MAKE'S THAILAND OPEN HIS FIRST PRO VICTORY

NEWS RELEASE
BANGKOK, August 12 - Englishman Chris Wood scored the first win of his professional career today with a two-shot victory in a rain-interrupted U.S. $1 million Thailand Open, breaking the hearts of home fans seeking a first Thai champion in eight years.
The 24-year-old European Tour regular -- competing in a OneAsia Tour event for the first time -- fired rounds of 67, 64, 67 and 67 for a 23-under par total of 265, although preferred lies were allowed because of soggy conditions at the 6,471 metre (7,077 yard) Suwan Golf and Country Club.
Hard-charging Thais Arnond Vongvanij (65) and Wisut Artjanawat (67) battled to catch the strapping 1.96-metre (6 ft 5 inch) Wood, but had to settle for a share of third place with Korean Lee Dong-hwan (67).
Alone in second was Jang Dong-kyu, also of Korea, who completed the first nine holes in just 29 shots en-route to a closing 63 and the best result of his career.
"It is brilliant – I am really, really pleased," Wood said, after what appeared to be a victory march from the 17th was interrupted by a rain delay of over an hour.
"It is hard winning. I always felt that once I got one win it would give me the confidence to go on and win more, so hopefully I can take this confidence back to the remainder of the tournaments I have got for the season."
Wood, one of five European Tour regulars competing in the event, was four under after six holes on Sunday, but gave his rivals a glimmer of hope with a bogey on the eighth.
At the 11th, however, he put one hand on the winner's cheque of over US$181,000 with a birdie putt of around 30 feet -- and then effectively pocketed it with an even longer effort on 15.
"It was a tough putt, but I putted really nicely this week," he said.
"I think I have turned the corner in my putting which has let me down all season. I have been playing as well as I have done this week but without converting chances. It is nice to convert a few. I always knew once I cracked the putting I would be winning and this week proved my point."
At four under, the cut was the lowest in OneAsia's history -- reflecting the strength of a field that was also bolstered by the presence of 20 Japan Tour players as part of a growing relationship between the circuits.
Wood turned professional in 2008 after finishing fifth in the Open Championship and then underscored his potential by bettering that the following year when he just missed out on making a play-off with Stewart Cink and Tom Watson at Turnberry. With a second and third place finish on the European tour this year, it was only a matter of time before he broke his duck.
Thailand Open defending champion Andre Stolz of Australia, who went on the win the OneAsia Order of Merit title last year, finished at eleven under after closing with a 67, his best round of the week.
The day belonged to Wood, however, who plans a break with his family to celebrate the win.
"I am going home for a week, a bit of rest, share it with my family and then onto Gleneagles in Scotland for a tournament," he said.
