BURGOYNE HAS TOP SIX CHANCE AT SENIORS TOUR Q SCHOOL

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Oban-based Terry Burgoyne needs one last big push on the final day to earn one of the six top cards at the European Seniors Tour Final Qualifying School at Vale do Pestana, Lagoa on Portugal's Algarve coastline.
Burgoyne, who spent the best part of 24 years in Sweden, shot a third-round, one-under-par 70 for a tally of two-under-211 over the par-71 lay-out.
He is in joint fifth position, eight shots behind the three-stroke leader, American Dick Mast who has broken 70 with every round, his latest a 69 for 10-under 203.
The only other Scot to survive the 54-hole cut at 221 or better was former Walker Cup player Lindsay Mann from Carnoustie. He shot his best round yet, a 70, for 218 and is joint 32nd.
Apart from the top six cards which guarantee playing time on the Over-50s circuit this year, the next eight in the final placings will be able to play in a limited number of events.
Mann will need to break 70 to improve 18 or so places over Thursday's final round.
Deeside's Peter Smith and David James from Dumfries missed the cut by one shot on 222, both players returning 72s for joint 45th place.
Edzell club pro Alastair Webster had a 76 for 223 and joint 52nd place.
Iain Parker (Royal North Devon) finished joint 59th on 225 after a 77 while Murray White (Penfold Park) shared 65th place with a 79 for 229.

IT LOOKS PLAIN SAILING FOR THREE-SHOT LEADER DICK MAST FROM AMERICA

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE EUROPEAN TOUR
Dick Mast will take a three-shot lead into the final round of the European Senior Tour Qualifying School Final Stage after a steady two under par 69 kept him in pole position to win a card for the 2012 season.
The American, who began the third round with a four-stroke cushion, kept up his momentum with a birdie on the second hole before picking up another on the tenth.
His only bogey of the day came on the 13th hole but he immediately regained a shot on the 14th hole to move to ten under par 203, three strokes clear of Englishman Paul Wesselingh who carded a bogey-free 68 to move to seven under par.
Despite struggling on the greens, Mast, who finished third in The 2006 Senior Open Championship at Turnberry, remains on course to succeed another American, Tim Thelen, as winner of the Senior Tour Qualifying School.
“The wind was from a different direction today and I made a few wrong decisions but got away with a few others and I’m in a good position,” said the 59 year old.
“I didn’t make any putts today, at all. I didn’t putt well and that was probably the difference between today and the first two rounds. But I feel pretty good and I’m hitting the ball decent. I feel like I’m stroking it good but I had a hard time getting a rhythm today.”
With the top six players earning full cards for the 2012 Senior Tour season, Mast has an eight-shot cushion going into the final round in terms of securing unconditional playing privileges, and 10 strokes over 14th position – the final spot to earn an alternate start card. However, he insisted that he will not be changing his game plan to play more conservatively in the final round.
“I’m just thinking about me – I’m not looking behind me,” said Mast. “I’m not going to play safe or anything and I’m going to try to shoot low tomorrow. I’m in a position whereby I can make more mistakes than the next guy and still get through but my goal was to win it and that is what I will try to do tomorrow.”
Wesselingh, the club professional at Kendleston Park, near Derby, birdied the first, seventh and 12th holes to maintain the pressure on Mast at the top of the leaderboard.
He is trying to secure a card at the first attempt but will also be looking for an improved performance on the greens in his final round.
“I holed a 20ft putt on 17 and another on the sixth when I could have dropped a shot so it is two bogey-free rounds in a row now,” said Wesselingh.
“I was pleased with the round but I’m struggling still on the greens so it could easily have been four or five shots better. I’m just hoping I can get in that top six though.”
Another Englishman, Steve Cipa, is third on four under par after a one under par 70 which included a double bogey 7 on the par five 16th hole.
Former Scottish Senior Open champion Glenn Ralph is a further shot back on three under par after also carding a 70, with five players, American Charlie Bolling (73), Scotland’s Terry Burgoyne (70), Canadian Rick Gibson (70), Northern Ireland’s Jimmy Heggarty (70) and Zeke P Martinez (68), all tied for fifth position on two under par.
The final round will be contested by 44 players following the third round cut, which was made at eight shots from 14th position – the final spot that would secure a conditional card for the 2012 season.

STUDENT MUNRO TOPS NORTH-EAST ALLIANCE CLASS FOR 3rd TIME

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Robert Gordon University student Gordon Munro scored his third win on the North-east Golfers' Alliance 2011-2012 circuit with a par-matching 64 over a short, winter course at Newburgh Golf Club, Aberdeenshire today.
Fraserburgh member Munro, pictured, a winner at Craibstone in November and Inverallochy in January, birdied the 11th and 12th, bogeying the first and 14th in halves of 33-31 to head a field of 84 players by one shot and win a £100 voucher.
Joint runners up on 65 were Tartan Tour pro Lee Vannet (Carnoustie) and rookie pro Kris Nicol (Fraserburgh).
Vannet overcame a bogey-bogey-bogey start with an eagle 2 at the fourth and birdies at the 10th and 13th. He dropped shots at the 11th and 18th in halves of 33-32.
Nicol, in contrast, was two under par after only four holes, thanks to birdies at the second and fourth but he bogeyed the fifth and sixth in an outward half of level par 32. A birdie at the 10th put him under par again but he had back-to-back bogeys again, at the 13th and 14th, in an inward 33.

ENGLAND NAME FOUR FOR JONES CUP INVITATIONAL FEB 3-5

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE ENGLISH GOLF UNION
Four members of the England Squad will attempt to create history by winning a US title that has continually eluded English players.
Craig Hinton (The Oxfordshire), Garrick Porteous (Bamburgh Castle, Northumberland), Ben Taylor (Walton Heath, Surrey) and Daniel Wasteney (Bondhay, Yorkshire) will fly the flag for England Golf in the Jones Cup Invitational at Ocean Forest Golf Club, Sea Island in Georgia from February 3-5.
A field of 84 top amateurs from the US and around the world, will compete over 54 holes of stroke play for this prestigious title which was inaugurated in 2001 as a biennial event but which is now played annually.
Hinton, 23, is no stranger to America having spent a short spell at college in Kentucky. He enjoyed a successful 2011 season, finishing tied sixth in the Portuguese Amateur, equal fifth in the Brabazon Trophy and joint ninth in the Welsh Open Stroke Play.
Those performances helped him finish ninth on the Titleist/FootJoy EGU Order of Merit, while he also made his full England debut in the Home Internationals in Ireland.
Porteous, 22, also made his full England debut in last year’s Home Internationals and there is again an American link as he is studying at the University of Tennessee. A former under 16 and boy cap, he finished runner-up in last year’s Tillman Trophy and tied ninth in the European Amateur Championship.
Taylor, 19, was also a debutant in last year’s Home Internationals and came close to victories in the South East of England Links Championship, finishing second, and tied third in the Lagonda Trophy. In 2010, he was the South East Junior Champion and the South of England Boys Champion. A student at Nova Southeastern University in Florida, he is also studying in America.
Wasteney, 20, is a former Yorkshire Open Champion and National Association of Public Golf Courses Champion. Last year, as Yorkshire Champion, he finished equal sixth in the County Champions Tournament and represented the EGU in the Costa Ballena Tournament and in the Riverswood Junior Open in the Netherlands.

North-west England economy forecast for £90million boost from 2012 OPEN

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE R AND A
February 1, Lytham, England: An independent study commissioned by Open Championship organiser, The R and A, forecasts that this year’s event, to be staged at Royal Lytham and St Annes Golf Club, will deliver a total economic benefit close to £90m to the regional economy of the North West.
The headline figure includes a forecast economic impact of £35.1 million and a destination marketing benefit of £52.6 million gained through global television exposure of the week-long event (July 15-22, 2012).
Researchers at the Sport Industry Research Centre at Sheffield Hallam University base their economic impact forecast on 185,000 spectator admissions and the established spending pattern of players, the media, event staff, sponsors and organisers measured over the last two championships.
Commenting on the research findings, R and A Executive Director - Championships, Johnnie Cole-Hamilton said:
“The Open Championship comes to England’s Golf Coast to provide the best players in the world with a true test of golf and it is good to know that we also bring an important financial boost to the host economy.”
Welcoming The Open Championship economic impact forecast, Fylde Borough Council Chief Executive, Allan Oldfield said:
“Having The Open Championship in town is clearly beneficial to local people and businesses in Fylde and we look forward to welcoming the many thousands of spectators destined to attend this years event”.
Commenting on the wider legacy of The Open Championship, Lancashire County Council Chief Executive, Phil Halsall said:
"The Open this year will be the Championship’s third visit to the North West in just seven years. In hard times the cash injection that comes with hosting the event can make a real difference to the economic outlook of the region”.
Companies in the North West are demonstrating their enthusiasm to do business at The Open accounting for 30 percent of official hospitality sales to date. Overall official hospitality sales are a third up on last year at this time with some packages already sold out. Official hospitality packages are available exclusively through TheOpen.com and companies should be aware that unofficial operators do not have on-course facilities.
