The other Graham Robertson wins Edward Trophy at Glasgow Gailes

The "other " Graham Robertson on the SGU Order of Merit circuit this summer - the one that spells his name that way and is a member of the Edinburgh municipal course club Silverknowe, won the final domestic four-rounder of the season - the Edward Trophy at Glasgow Gailes.
His namesake, spelled Graeme Robertson, a Stirling University student and a member at Glenbervie Golf Club, won the previous weekend's event, the South-east District Open at Musselburgh. But he did not play in this one because he is one his way to Slovenia with the rest of the Stirling University squad for the 2nd European university team championships this coming week.
Graham Robertson Mark II had three solid rounds to start with - 72, 71 and 71 and then burst clear of the field on the final lap with an excellent closing round of 67 for a total of 281.
He won by two shots from former British amateur champion Craig Watson (East Renfrewshire) who figured prominently in the SE District Open until fading on the final day. Watson scored 71, 71, 70 and 71 - against a CSS of 74 for each round - for a total of 283.
Peter Latimer (St Andrews New) was the halfway leader with on 140 with scores of 74 and 66, believe to be a course record. Peter subsided with Sunday rounds of 73 and 73 to fill third place on 284 - four shots clear of Mathew Clark (Kilmacolm) and Scott Crichton (Aberdour) on 288

THOMAS BJORN AGAIN! SECOND SUCCESSIVE VICTORY FOR DANE

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Thomas Bjorn matched the lowest round of his European Tour career to grab a second successive victory in blistering fashion in Switzerland today.
The 40 year old Dane fired a nine under par 62 to turn a three stroke deficit into a four shot win over Martin Kaymer at the Omega European Masters.
Bjorn had also been three behind with a round to go in last week's Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles.
There he was involved in a marathon five-man, five-hole play-off. This time he left the rest behind - Rory McIlroy and Lee Westwood included - with a marvellous closing burst.
Kaymer missed a two foot putt on the long 14th that would have taken him two in front and how Bjorn made him pay.
He was almost in water with his approach on the same hole but birdied it to draw level, made another ten footer for eagle on the next and then put the icing on the cake with two closing birdies.
After going five under for the last five holes, he said: "The way I finished was special and it's been an amazing two weeks.
"I started hitting my wedges so well last week and kept it going.
"At the end you think nothing can go wrong. Golf seems easy sometimes and you have to remember that when you are not playing well."
He has had a real rollercoaster career, talking of "fighting demons" after he lost the 2003 Open Championship from three ahead with four to play and going through another low this summer following the death of his father.
But with a third win of the year - World Number One Luke Donald is the only other player to do that - Bjorn is now back in the world's top 30 and, of course, leads the Ryder Cup race which started this week at Crans-sur-Sierre.
The picturesque mountain course saw record crowds of 54,100 flock through the gates this week - up by 1,400 on last year.
With tee times brought forward because of the threat of storms, Kaymer burst out of the pack with two eagles and two birdies in the first eight holes.
But as low cloud and rain duly arrived the German lost the magic, finishing with ten pars in a row for a 65.
Second place could be good enough to take him back up from fifth in the Official World Golf Ranking to third, however, depending on results in America.
Joint third were US Open Champion McIlroy, South African Jaco Van Zyl and overnight leader Jamie Donaldson.
McIlroy was joint top after two opening birdies, but had to wait until the 14th for his next one and a 68 was never likely to be enough.
Van Zyl, last man into the event, came through from 15th with a 64, but Donaldson could manage only a 70 and now has gone 238 European Tour events without a win.
Westwood also shot 70 and, having started the second in sole possession of second, that meant a sixth place finish for the World Number Two
Fellow Englishman Nick Dougherty, whose opening 63 had set him up to end a miserable run of 21 successive missed cuts, fell back to 45th with a 73.
He was over par in each of the final three rounds and so the three-time winner still faces a long battle to avoid a return to the qualifying school at the end of season.
But at least he now appears on The Race to Dubai. His last cheque was last November.
McIlroy, playing for the first time since he hurt his arm against a tree root in the US PGA Championship, said: "It was a bittersweet week. Coming back off the injury I didn't know what to expect. To get myself into contention was great and the arm felt 100 per cent healthy, which is a huge positive.
"Even if I had played well I don't know if I would have been able to catch Thomas.
Donaldson, still with a share of the lead with four to play, commented: "I'm quite happy really - it's my best finish of the year.
"I did well to get it out in one over, but the back nine I played great and that's the time when you want to play well.
"There are so many positives to take out of it. I stayed in the hunt not playing well and you can take a lot from that. I can't possibly beat myself up over it."

TITLE-HOLDER KISNER SHARES NATIONWIDE TOUR LEAD

FROM THE US NATIONWIDE TOUR WEBSITE
CANONSBURG, Pennsylvania -- Defending champion Kevin Kisner gave four shots back to par on the back nine Saturday and fell into a three-way tie for the 54-hole at the Mylan Classic in suburban Pittsburgh. Kisner's even-par 71 at the Southpointe Golf Club left him right where he began the day, at 13-under par.
Californian John Mallinger birdied two of his final three holes for a 4-under 67 and a share of the third-round lead along with England's Gary Christian, who rallied with four consecutive back-nine birdies for a 2-under 69.
Former Navy Lieutenant Billy Hurley is in fourth place after a 2-under 69 put him at 12-under 201. Andrew Svoboda is two shots back and tied for fifth place after a 2-under 69 that featured eight birdies. Georgia's Scott Brown (70) is also at 11-under 202.
Saturday's third round produced a scoring average of 70.761 and featured several stumbles, or 'sticky patches' according to Christian, from the leaders.
Kisner, looking to become the first to successfully defend a title in the Nationwide Tour's 22-year history, opened the day with a two-shot advantage but gave that back with a double-bogey at the par-3, 3rd hole
"I was shocked when I was two-over early and I wasn't getting lapped," he said. "Nobody went really low."
The former Georgia All-America turned things around with five birdies in a seven-hole stretch that pushed him to 16-under par through 11 holes and four in front of his nearest challenger.
"It was frustrating because I had a chance to run away from the field there for a minute," he said. "My tee shot on 14 (par-5) rolled two inches in the rough and I had to lay up where you should be making birdie. I play the next three holes in four-over par. That's a five-shot swing right there."
Kisner's bogey-bogey-double bogey patch was the result of his difficulties around the greens.
"It felt like I was chipping like a 30-handicapper there for a while," he said. "I just didn't have very good touch today. It's a guessing game on how the ball comes out. You're short-sided and you know you have only about eight feet of green to work with and your ball is sitting down in four-inch rough.
You're trying to guess if it's going to come out hot or if it's going to come out dead."
Kisner guessed wrong on several holes and saw his lead disappear. A birdie at No. 17 gave him a share of the lead with Mallinger, who jump-started his round with a five-foot eagle putt at the par-5, 11th.
"I was trying to be patient because I knew you can make birdies on the back nine," he said. "There are a lot of birdies out here but you still have to make the putts."
Mallinger made some good ones down the stretch, and he knew he needed them.
"I looked at the leaderboard on 16 and saw that Kevin was 16- or 17-under," he said. "I knew I had to get a little more aggressive to stay in the golf tournament."
Mallinger rolled in a 25-foot birdie putt at No. 16 and then a 12-footer at the 18th to post the first 13-under score.
The final duo of Kisner and Christian joined him a short time later.
Christian, an Auburn grad who has settled his family in Birmingham (AL), had his own problems during the day. Specifically, three consecutive bogeys midway through the front nine that left him six shots back of Kisner, his playing partner.
"You just have to gather yourself once you have that sticky patch," he said. "It was good to get that out of the way and hopefully that's it for the week. I knew he was killing me and I knew I was way behind. The good thing is that when you're confident in your ability to reel off three or four in a row, then suddenly you're back into it as soon as he cools down for a little bit."
The timing worked out well for Christian, who was error-free for his final 12 holes.
• John Daly withdrew during the third round due to injury (hamstring).
• Kevin Kisner will be attempting to do something no player has ever done in the 22-year history of the Nationwide Tour -- repeat as champion.

PORTLETHEN WIN ABERDEEN PENNANT LEAGUE FOR FIRST TIME

MESSAGE FROM RICHARD BARR OF NEWMACHAR GC
On behalf of Newmachar Golf Club, I would like to congratulate Portlethen Golf Club on their first Aberdeen Pennant League win, by defeating Newmachar GC 3.5 to 1.5 in the final at Peterculter Golf Club

The final was played in excellent sporting spirit, and all the players enjoyed the afternoon / evening.
Thanks should also go to Peterculter GC, staff including Greenkeepers, catering and Dean for the organising and hosting etc. Course was in great condition, food was good - just the outcome was Newmachar's way - however, it is a well deserved, long overdue, win for Potlethen.
ps special mention should go to the Portlethen player in group 4 (can't remember his name) on his hole in one, on the 8th, ~155 yards, with a 7 iron...having just come off the back of an eagle on the par 5, 7th..!

Thanks again, and well done Portlethen,

Richard Barr
Newmachar Match Sec.

Portlethen win Aberdeen Pennant League

Portlethen Golf Club have won the 2011 Aberdeen Pennant League sponsored by the Cults Hotel after a thrilling final against Newmachar on Saturday 3rd September at Peterculter. Playing in their third final in five years, Portlethen’s young squad triumphed by 3½ points to 1½ for a thoroughly deserved victory.
In the top game, Clark Brechin and Ryan Penny, playing in his last tournament before joining the pro ranks, were always comfortable against Chris Simpson and Mark McKechnie closing the game by 4&3. In a close second match, Ian Craik and Graham Innes won the 14th and 15th holes and held on for a 2&1 victory over Keith Martin and Bryan Robson. When Lewis Shand and Chris Rees lost by 3 and 2 to Richard Barr and Paul Henderson and Ryan Donaldson and Keith Horne squared with George Mitchell and Chris Lamb, all was set for the final match to determine the destination of the trophy.
Gary Esson and Stephen Cook had led since the 3rd hole against Ewan Duthie and Dave McCormack, but this was a game that always looked like going all 18 holes to seal the overall result. It was fitting that Gary Esson was the man who closed it out with a 1 hole victory, playing his 19th season of Pennant League and securing Portlethen’s first ever victory.
Team Captain Donald Smith collected the trophy amid scenes of celebration after a long wait for Portlethen. The spirit of the side and quality of golf on the day were exemplified by Ryan Donaldson’s hole-in-one at the 8th hole, using a 6-iron.
