LEWIS, SULLIVAN SHARE LEAD IN AUSSIE AMATEUR MASTERS

Sunningdale's Stiggy Hodgson, the joint halfway leader with a pair of 69s for 138, had to withdraw from the tournament before the third round - reason unknown at the moment - but two other Englishmen, former British boys champion Tom Lewis and another Walker Cup squad contender, Andrew Sullivan, took up the standard and are sharing the 54-hole lead with Tasmanian Ryan McCarthy.
Lewis has scored 72, 69 and 69 for a six-under 210 over the Royal Melbourne course.
Andrew Sullivan achieved the same total with scores of 68, 71 and 71 while McCarthy, joint 36-hole leader with Hodgson,  hit the 210 mark with scores of 65, 73 and 72.
A third Englishman, Laurie Canter, is only two shots off the pace after a 68 for 212.

LEE HARPER MISSES OUT BY A SINGLE SHOT AT ASIAN Q SCHOOL

FROM THE ASIAN TOUR WEBSITE
Hua Hin, Thailand: A total of 64 players qualified for next week's Asian Tour Qualifying School Final Stage presented by Sports Authority of Thailand following the completion of the First Stage on Saturday.
But they do not include former Scottish boys' match-play champion Lee Harper (pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency).
The Archerfield Links man from Musselburgh missed out by a single shot at Majestic Creek.
Bangladesh’s Shakhawat, Australia’s Matt Docking, Berry Henson of the United States and Japan's Kenichi Sawada took a giant step towards securing their full playing rights on the Asian Tour this season after finishing atop the leaderboard over three different venues.
Shakhawat posted an even-par 72 to take top honours with Docking who returned with a 68 for a four-day total of 12-under-par 276 at the Majestic Creek Golf Resort while Henson added a final 70 to his previous scores of 73, 69 and 70 to emerge as the top finisher at the Imperial Lakeview Golf Club.
At the Springfield Royal Country Club, Kenichi posted scores of 67, 72, 68 and 72 to claim top spot and qualify for the all-important Final Stage which will take place next week.
Japan’s Tomoya Tokunaga carded a 69 to take a share of third place alongside Finland’s Kalle Samooja on matching 278s at the Majestic Creek Golf Resort while at the Imperial Lakeview, Japan’s Masanori Kobayashi and Jonathan Moore of the United States posted matching 283s to take equal second, one shot behind leader Henson.
Joshua Kelly of the United States returned with a final 283 total for second place while Australia's Tim Stewart took third place on 286 at the Springfield Royal Country Club.
The top 26 and ties from Imperial Lakeview made it through to the Final Stage while the top 24 from Majestic Creek Golf Resort and the top-11 and ties from the Springfield Royal Country Club also earned tickets to the final phase.
Players who compete in the Qualifying School will also be eligible for memberships on the Asian Development Tour, the region’s secondary circuit, where a minimum of five tournaments will be staged in the new season.

DAVID DRYSDALE MOVES INTO FOURTH PLACE IN JOBURG OPEN

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Defending champion Charl Schwartzel and his South African compatriots Thomas Aiken and Garth Mulroy share the lead going into the final round of a wide-open Joburg Open.

The South African trio all had similar efforts on day three, with Schwartzel and Mulroy - both part of a three-way tie for the lead at the halfway stage - going around the par 71 East Course of the Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club in two under 69s.

Aiken, who was a shot behind at the start of the day, managed the best round of the trio, a 68, as the leaders ended on 15 under overall.

Their closest challenge was coming from Scotland's David Drysdale after his four under 67 put him a shot further back, while English pair Ben Evans (67) and Jamie Elson (71) were tied on 13 under - the latter amongst the top trio after two rounds.

Jean-Baptiste Gonnet from France was tied with them to sit two shots of the leaders, with Welshman Jamie Donaldson recording the round of the day score of 65 to move onto 11 under.

Four other players were with him - Swede Oscar Floren (66), Antti Ahokas (68) of Finland and South African duo Allan Versfeld (70) and Branden Grace (71).

The big battle, though, looks set to take place at the top of the leaderboard as the co-sanctioned European and Sunshine Tour event reaches its climax.

Aiken, who led for most of the day after carding four birdies and a bogey on the par three 16th, believes someone outside the leading trio could produce a sting in the tail.

"Golf's a funny game, you can get someone shooting a 62 to come from behind, so you never know," he said.

"You need to concentrate on what you need to do, go out there and whatever happens out there happens."

Trying to explain why low scoring was hard to come by today, the 27 year old, a seven-time winner on the Sunshine Tour, added: "There were two difficult things out there today. One was the wind and the other thing was the pin placements, which were in some really nasty positions.

"I did what I needed to do, didn't do anything ridiculously bad, but it just didn't want to go in the hole. Hopefully tomorrow it will go the other way."

Schwartzel missed several putts along the way as he ended with his worst score of the week so far - he shot 68 and 61 previously.

The 26 year old also felt that the wind had been in a factor in keeping scoring in check.

"It was a tough day out there today," he said. "The wind blew a lot and this course is not in one direction, it's in different ones, so it makes things difficult.

"It always swirls and makes it difficult to choose clubs."

The World Number 32, who is the highest ranked player in the field, also lamented his putting, adding: "I know I hit the ball well, but I left a few putts out there.

"I missed a few short ones, which weren't really bad ones, but just misread.

"Then I three-putted 15 and all of a sudden I knew I'm now on the back foot when I could have had quite a bit of momentum going my way.

"But no one really got away and I'm right in it for tomorrow."

After the overnight leaders all dropped early shots - Elson starting with a double bogey 6 - Aiken got his nose in front with an easy two-putt birdie on the sixth.

Schwartzel responded with a hat-trick of gains approaching the turn, starting with an approach to six feet on the seventh.

Aiken hit a great third at the par-5 eighth after finding sand off the tee to set up a two foot birdie and retain his lead, and fired in a 15 footer at the tenth.

Mulroy refused to allow the tournament to develop into a two-horse race and fired his tee shot to six feet on the par three 12th, before holing from 20 feet at the next.
Drysdale, who has played on the Sunshine Tour, scored better in the third round than any of the trio ahead of him.
His four-under-par 67 was made up on halves of 35 and 32. He has yet to bogey a hole after the sixth (in his second round he did not have a single bogey over the 18 holes).
The Scot started badly in the third round with bogeys at the first and fourth but he put that right with birdies at the short fifth, long eighth and ninth. From the turn he had six pars and birdies at the 13th, 17th and 18th.
SCOTSWATCH: Apart from Drysdale, Lloyd Saltman was the Scot with the most reasons to be cheerful at the end of the third day. He shot a 69 fpr 206 to be sharing 22nd place with Marc Warren who slipped back to a 73 after opening rounds of 67 and 66 had held out promise of a title challenge over the last two rounds. Scott Jamieson is on 208 - joint 38th place - after a one-over-par 72. Steven O'Hara's hopes of following up last weekend's heroics died a death when he shot a 75 to drop to joint 67th place.

LOCAL HERO FOUR CLEAR IN CHALLENGE TOUR OPENER

From Challenge Tour Press Officer Paul Symes
Home hero Gaganjeet Bhullar took a stranglehold of the inaugural Gujarat Kensville Challenge after racing four shots clear of the chasing pack on the third day of the €200,000 event, which marks the start of the 2011 Challenge Tour season. Bhullar, bidding to become the first Indian to triumph on the Challenge Tour, collected five birdies – four on the front nine – and an eagle 3 at the 598yd sixth hole in a superb display at the Jeev Milkha Singh-designed Kensville Golf Club in Ahmedabad, India.
The 22-year-old’s round of 68, which featured just the one blemish at the eighth hole, moved Bhullar to eight under par, four shots clear of his nearest challenger Matthew Baldwin of England.
Bhullar said: “I wasn’t playing safe after the turn, I was just trying to keep the ball on the fairway and try to hit the middle of the green, irrespective of the pin position. It was also windy as we played in the afternoon, which made it a bit difficult. But I was concentrating so hard that actually I lost track of the wind factor.
“I don’t think you can ever really enjoy a lead in golf. It doesn’t matter if you’re five or ten shots ahead, you can’t ever really relax. But obviously it does give you confidence. In the final round, I’m just going to keep the same policy of trying to hit every fairway and green, and hopefully convert a few birdies if I can. It would be great to begin the season with a victory.”
In contrast to his playing partner, joint overnight leader Florian Praegant endured a difficult day, reaching the turn in 40 after carding three bogeys and a double bogey at the fourth hole for the second day in succession. But to his credit the Austrian staged a miraculous late rally to sign for a round of 73 which moved him to third place on three under par.
Baldwin is one place higher and one shot closer to the leader after notching four birdies in his round of 70. The Englishman birdied the third, sixth, ninth and 15th holes, but gave shots back at the fifth and 13th.
He said: “I’m slowly getting used to the conditions out here. There’s no doubt that it’s a tough course, but it’s also interesting to play because you need to use your brains. My driving was fantastic today. I could’ve ended up with at least a couple of more birdies had I putted properly, but it was a good round anyway.
“I know four shots is a big lead to catch, but I’ll give it my best and you never know what can happen over 18 holes of golf. I’m confident of putting on a good show.”
Baldwin’s compatriot Matt Ford is in a tie fourth place on two under par alongside Bangladesh’s Siddikur Rahman. England’s Gary Lockerbie and Denmark’s Mads Vibe-Hastrup share sixth place after both men compiled rounds of 69.

STUART APPLEBY LEADS SONY OPEN WITH A SIX-UNDER 64

FROM THE GOLF.COM WEBSITE
HONOLULU (AP) — The Sony Open took a while to get started. So did Stuart Appleby.
Appleby was humming along on rain-soaked Waialae Country Club, no bogeys on his cards but not many birdies, either. That changed when he holed a 163yd shot from the fairway and a 35ft putt on the next green to finish with a 6-under 64.
That gave the Australian a one-shot lead over nine players from Matt Kuchar and England's Justin Rose to a pair of rookies in Nate Smith and Ben Martin. In soft condition and only a light breeze, 65 players in the 144-man field broke par.
Appleby shot 30 on the back nine, including a chip-in from the front of the 12th green. Then came a strong finish, with a 5-iron that he holed out for eagle on the 16th and the long birdie putt on the 17th.
"Less than two hours, really went from a pretty plain round to a good round," Appleby said.
No one could catch him in the afternoon. Shigeki Maruyama, a popular figure in these parts, was at 5 under through 12 holes until he dropped a few shots on the back and had to birdie the 18th for a 65.
Martin, who just graduated from Clemson University last year, wasn't sure what to expect. It wasn't the ideal preparation for his first regular US PGA Tour event, although it was out of his hands. He had to do a commercial shoot on Tuesday, then couldn't practise Wednesday because the range was closed and didn't play Thursday when rain washed out the opening round.
"I hadn't hit a golf shot in three days," he said.
He hit most of them quite well in the opening round. Five of his birdies were from inside 8 feet, and two others came on the par 5s that he reached in two. It helped to have some experience on the bag. Martin sent his caddie to California to study the four courses used in the Bob Hope Classic, and he used Frank Williams, the long-time caddie for Stewart Cink, who was coming to Hawaii on vacation.
Martin hadn't never seen Waialae until this week, so the soft conditions didn't feel different.
That wasn't the case for the veterans.
"I have never seen the course like this," Steve Stricker said after rallying for a 69. The fairways were too wet to mow, and grass clippings that had been floating in water created yellow patches of debris.
Appleby said the course was "heavy," but he had no complaints. Players were allowed to lift, clean and place their golf balls through the fairway, although some players felt by the end of the day it wasn't necessary.
"Much better than I expected," said Kuchar, who made a long eagle putt on the ninth and made only one bogey.
Appleby was among those who started his season last week on Maui, and it was a struggle. The Sony Open offers a completely different test, minus the mountainous terrain and the severe slope on the greens with a strong grain.
He felt more relaxed here, and the finish helped.
Appleby chipped in for birdie from in front of the 12th green - "sort of freshened up that par, par, par I had the first couple hours on the front nine," he said - added a birdie on the 13th and then finished with a flourish. With a slight breeze off the Pacific, from a 163 yards away on the 16th, he hit an easy 5-iron right of the flag and was surprised to hear the cheer when it went in for an eagle.
Before long, a good score was a great one. It was his lowest opening round in 10 years at the Sony Open.
Appleby played in the same group with Rose, and Appleby thought the Englishman played far better from tee to green, the difference perhaps being that Rose didn't hole any full shots from the fairway.
Rose opened with a 75 last week and played well from there, finishing in a tie for 12th.
"I didn't panic, just really realised that it was a good week to knock off some rust and start growing some good habits," he said. "And the week kind of evolved and I got better every day. It was nice to carry that on into this week."
This week figures to be different. Because an entire round was washed out, the plan is to play the second round on Saturday, followed by a 36-hole marathon on Sunday.
Some players did well to rally. Vijay Singh, playing for only the second time in the last four months, was 4 over through six holes. He birdied four of his last six holes for a 70.
And then there was Charles Warren, who got into the Sony Open through his top-10 finish at Disney in the final tournament of the year. Warren birdied his last hole at Disney, which not only put him in Honolulu to start the year, but got him inside the top 150 on the money list to give him at least conditional status.
He promptly made three straight bogeys to start his season and was 4 over through six holes. It took him until the eighth hole to take honors from 67-year-old Dave Eichelberger, playing as local club pro for winning the Aloha Section. But Warren turned it around by playing 5 under over his last 10 holes for a 69.
Eichelberger had a 76, and that wasn't the worst of it. Michael Thompson, one of 27 rookies at Waialae, posted the first 80 on the US Tour this year. One of the veterans, Jeff Maggert, had a 75.
"Almost shot my age," said Maggert, who at 46 has been around long enough to laugh at himself;"
