TIGER WOODS' LEAD NOW FOUR SHOTS

FROM THE AOL GOLF NEWS SERVICE
Tiger Woods has extended his lead to four shots after the second round of the Chevron World Challenge in Thousand Oaks, California.
Woods, whose two-shot lead at the end of the first round saw him top a leaderboard for the first time since winning the Australian Masters a year ago, consolidated his position with a round of six-under 66 to put him 13 under overall.
An eagle on the second got him off to a strong start with further birdies coming on the fourth, fifth, 11th and 16th holes.
Graeme McDowell took sole possession of second place with a round of 69 as fellow Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy could only manage a 70, his scorecard blotted by a double-bogey on the 18th.
Luke Donald, who began the day in a tie for sixth, fired a round of 66 to move level with McIlroy on eight under.
But the big mover on the day was Paul Casey, who had a disappointing 73 on Friday but bounced back with a 65 - highlighted by a stunning hole in one on the 12th - to catapult himself from 14th to fifth.

THE WONDER OF WESTWOOD - THREE AHEAD AT SUN CITY

FROM THE AOL GOLF NEWS SERVICE
World No 1 Lee Westwood produced a brilliant eight-under-par 64 to storm into the lead at the halfway stage of the Nedbank Golf Challenge at Sun City, South Africa today.
The Englishman, who began the competition with a four-under 68 on Thursday, was flawless on Day 2 on his way to collecting eight birdies. Lee leads fellow Ryder Cup team winner Ross Fisher (68) by three strokes on 12 under par.
Three more players that tasted success with Europe at Celtic Manor - Edoardo Molinari, Miguel Angel Jimenez and Padraig Harrington - are three strokes further back on six under.
Italian Molinari, along with South Africa's Tim Clark, managed the second best scores, with their 67s at the Gary Player Country Club giving them hope for the weekend. Ernie Els was all alone on five under after shooting 68, with Clark's effort seeing him climb to four under, the same score as defending champion Robert Allenby after his second successive 70.
But the day undoubtedly belonged to Westwood - a player clearly on top of his game after surpassing Tiger Woods as world number one at the end of October.
"I haven't played a lot recently, so I still feel a bit rusty," Westwood said. "But today was great, it was about getting the most out of the round."

GAVIN DEAR HAS REASONS TO BE CHEERFUL

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Perthshire's former Walker Cup and Eisenhower Trophy hero Gavin Dear is obviously disappointed he did not make it through to the European Tour Final Qualifying School but he has returned home from his Stage 2 failure with plenty of reasons to be cheerful.
"I have a category for the Challenge Tour, which should give me a good number of starts. I also have an exemption into every Allianz Challenge Tour event through my 20th place finish on this year's Allianz Golf Tour Order of Merit," said the Scone man.
"I would then hope to receive some invitations to events that I don't automatically get into, hopefully getting as close to a full season as possible.
"At the moment, I'm kind of snowed in, so having an enforced break from golf, which is not a bad thing after a long season. I am hoping to be able to play in the Challenge Tour event in India in January and thus will try and prepare as well as I can."
Dear has many contacts in Florida through his four years at Lynn University, Boca Raton and Morocco is also a warm-weather practice venue option.
"I will go away during the rest if the winter and gain as much practice as possible. The Challenge Tour has one event in January, February, March and April, so I need to wait until the schedule is fully released and then plan around those events.
"As for 2010, I was very happy with my year, obviously struggling at Q School was disappointing, but getting my Challenge Tour category from the Alps Tour was my main goal. I feel I have improved as a player, become more consistent and more patient.
"I need to thank my sponsors, Murrayshall Hotel and Golf Club and Tetra, who have given me invaluable support during my first year as a professional.
"I am looking forward to a succesful year in 2011, and hope many others Scots do as well."

THE ROAD TO MOROCCO
Scottishgolfview.com editor Colin Farquharson has strong links with Morocco - Marrakech in particular where there are half-a-dozen courses with practice facilities, all within easy reach of the city - through Mohamed Fakir of Menara Travel.
If any rookie pro - or any professional or amateur- for that matter wants to practice during the winter at a warm/hot-weather venue, then Morocco is certainly worth considering. E-mail Colin@scottishgolfview.com and I will pass on your details to Mohamed Fakir.
PS The 2nd Morocco Golf Festival will be held over five courses at Marrakech from October 8 to 15, 2011. Colin Farquharson will again be Tournament Director.

BAEK, GRIFFITHS SHARE INDIAN OPEN LEAD

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE ASIAN TOUR
New Delhi: Korean youngster Baek Seuk-hyun and England ’s Simon Griffiths shared the halfway lead at the US$1.25 million Hero Honda Indian Open on Friday to give themselves a shot of winning a maiden Asian Tour title.
The 20-year-old Baek, who has lived in Thailand for the past eight years, stunned even his father with a second round two-under-par 70 to tie Griffiths, who fired a superb 67, on six-under-par 138 at the Delhi Golf Club.
A shot back was India ’s surprise package Manav Jaini (69), American duo Anthony Kang (67) and rookie Ben Fox (69) and Sweden ’s Rikard Karlberg (69), who is chasing a second victory of the year at the fabled Delhi venue.
Thailand’s Kiradech Aphibarnrat and Namchok Tantipokakul returned a 70 and 72 respectively to be two off the pace while Ajun Atwal, the first Indian to win on the PGA Tour, moved ominously up the leaderboard with a 69, four back in the Hero Honda Indian O pen , the joint richest full field event on the Asian Tour.
“My dad called me and he was so surprised that I played really good. When we played here early this year, I played so bad. He’s really happy. I’m happy,” said Baek, who turned professional two years ago.
On the advice of his caddie, Baek has kept his driver in his hotel room to negotiate the tight and challenging Delhi layout and he has expertly played his way into contention despite his inexperience. He shot four birdies against two bogeys and was excited to be leading.
“There are many good players. I need to concentrate hard tomorrow. It’s only the second day. My caddie has helped me a lot. He said earlier this week “no driver”. It’s my first time leading a big tournament. I dream of winning a big tournament every day and this time, it’s a chance for me and I hope to take it,” added the Korean, who has won three local Thai events in his young career.
Griffiths, fighting for his Asian Tour card, missed a short birdie putt at the last hole for the outright lead but his 67 was still the joint lowest of the day. “There was a spike mark right on it (his line). I was thinking about the mark and should have been thinking about striking a good putt. Stupid really,” lamented Griffiths .
“I have just been lacking confidence recently. When you are struggling you think about going backwards rather than forwards. I don’t know what has turned things around but I am just digging in. I need to get something out of the week.”
After finishing third in the Barclays Singapore O pen last month, Karlberg, winner of the SAIL O pen in India this year, gave himself a chance of winning at the Delhi course again with six birdies against a bogey and one double bogey.
“I will be the king of Delhi if I can win again. Today, it didn’t feel that good but I still had a good score. You can feel that there is something special here which I like,” said the Swede.
“Everything feels comfortable and I trust my putting again. I was a bit down after my win but I feel it’s coming back. I think I’m in good form.”
Indian newcomer Jaini, who has 10 top-10s on the local circuit this season, produced a bogey free card to move into contention at the Hero Honda Indian O pen . He shot birdies on the 13th, 18th and second holes for a shot at glory.
“This is my home course and I know it pretty well. I think 10 under would be the winning score. A positive mindset helps a lot at this venue,” said the 27-year-old.
Scot Ross Bain made the cut with only a stroke to spare after rounds of 75 and 72 for 147.
Surprise non-qualifier was Sweden's Daniel Chopra, a winner on the US PGA Tour. He had scores of 74 and 76 for 150, to miss out by two shots.

Thai beats Oldcorn for European Seniors Tour Rookie of Year award

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE EUROPEAN SENIORS TOUR
Boonchu Ruangkit has been named as the European Senior Tour’s Rookie of the Year following a magnificent debut season in which the Thai won four times and topped the Order of Merit. Ruangkit succeeds Australian Mike Harwood as recipient of the coveted annual award, joining an illustrious list of past winners that includes record Senior Tour money winner Carl Mason (2003), Ryder Cup star Costantino Rocca (2007) and former Masters Champion Ian Woosnam (2008).
He becomes the 13th Rookie of the Year since the award was inaugurated in 1998, when Irishman Denis O’Sullivan was honoured.
Ruangkit, who is revered as the ‘Godfather of Thai Golf,’ enjoyed a whirlwind 2010 having started the year as a relative unknown in Europe.
The 54 year old won on his first appearance of the season at The Aberdeen Brunei Senior Masters presented by The Stapleford, although his prize money did not count towards the Order of Merit as he was not a Senior Tour Member at the time.
Ruangkit then tore up the record books when he dominated the Chang Thailand Senior Masters presented by ISPS, winning by an unprecedented 11 strokes and a record low total of 21 under par.
He completed his hat-trick by capturing the Berenberg Bank Masters in South Africa before adding a fourth title when he won for the first time on European soil in the Benahavis Senior Masters in October.
That saw him place one hand on the John Jacobs Trophy and he sealed his position as European Senior Tour Number One – and Rookie of the Year – with a superb final round 65 in the OKI Castellón Senior Tour Championship to claim a share of eighth position and take his season earnings to €266,609.
Andy Stubbs, Managing Director of the European Senior Tour, said: “Boonchu’s achievements in 2010 have been nothing short of remarkable and he is a worthy recipient of the Rookie of the Year Award to sit alongside the John Jacobs Trophy he received for leading the Order of Merit.
“There was some considerable competition for the Rookie of the Year Award, including five-time European Tour winner Barry Lane and former PGA Champion Andrew Oldcorn, so it is testament to how well Boonchu played that he should finish top of the pile.
“He follows some fantastic names as the winner of the Rookie of the Year and we look forward to another hotly contested award in 2011.”
Ruangkit’s nearest rival for the Rookie of the Year Award was Scotland’s Oldcorn, who finished seventh on the Order of Merit with earnings of €163,114, followed by former Ryder Cup player Lane in 20th place, Mark Belsham in 25th position and Qualifying School winner John Harrison in 41st.

Ian Poulter named Golfer of Month for November

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY EUROPEAN TOUR
Ian Poulter has won The Race to Dubai European Tour Golfer of the Month award for November following his victory in the UBS Hong Kong Open and two other top ten finishes in a superb end to the season.
The Englishman, who receives an engraved alms dish and a jeroboam of Moët and Chandon champagne in recognition of his achievement, triumphed at Hong Kong Golf Club by one shot from Italian teenager Matteo Manassero, posting an impressive 22 under par 258 which included a stunning ten under par 60 in the second round.
The victory was sandwiched between a tie for sixth place in the Barclays Singapore Open in defence of the title he won the previous year, and the runners-up spot at the season-ending Dubai World Championship.
Having tied at 14 under par 274 with Sweden’s Robert Karlsson after four rounds over the Earth Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates, the pair traded birdies at the first play-off hole before Poulter dropped his ball on his marker on the green of the second extra hole. The marker moved, initiating a one shot penalty, which was enough for Karlsson, who birdied the hole anyway, to clinch the title.
It was an unfortunate finish for Poulter, but he was widely praised not only for the fact he alerted the rules officials to the incident, but for the way he graciously accepted the situation and the subsequent defeat. His prize money for second place, however, took him to a career-high fourth in The Race to Dubai, with earnings of €3,027,008 for 2010.
Veteran television commentator Renton Laidlaw, a member of the judging panel, said: “Ian has been in tremendous form over the last month and he was thoroughly deserving of his victory in Hong Kong. Not only does he produce some fantastic golf, he entertains the crowds with his flair and colourful character.
“He was just outside the top ten in the WGC-HSBC Champions in China and ran Adam Scott close to put up a wonderful defence of his title in Singapore before winning in style in Hong Kong. To then also play as well as he did once again in Dubai before showing sportsmanship at the end of the tournament, means he is not only a worthy winner of the award this month, but also a credit to the game.”
It was a difficult decision for the judging panel, comprising a cross section of the golfing media, who considered yet another month on The European Tour where each and every victory had strong merits.
The panel commended Italy’s Francesco Molinari, who went head to head with World Number One Lee Westwood to win the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai; Robert Karlsson, who claimed his second European Tour title of the season in Dubai, and Adam Scott, who won the Barclays Singapore Open at Sentosa Golf Club for the third time in six years.
However the decision went to Poulter who now has the honour of being the only player to have won a monthly award twice in 2010 having picked up February nomination following his victory in the WGC-Accenture Match Play in Arizona.

TIGER'S 65 LEADS CHEVRON WORLD CHALLENGE

Tiger Woods put himself in position to end a forgettable year on a triumphant note by charging one shot clear in the Chevron World Challenge first round.
Seeking his first golf victory of 2010 after becoming engulfed in a torrid sex scandal at the end of last season, tournament host Woods fired a sparkling seven-under-par 65 at Sherwood Country Club, California.
Although he recorded his only bogey at the par-four last after pushing his tee shot behind a tree, he matched his lowest score of the year to finish one shot ahead of Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell.
"To get the lead here, you've got to play the par-fives well and today I played them well," Woods said in a greenside interview after recording birdies on each of the five par-5s.
"I played solid all day. I didn't really make any putts. I made just one putt today. It's kind of interesting."
Woods opened with a 65 at the US PGA Tour's Barclays tournament in August and fired another 65 in the second round of the Deutsche Bank Championship the following week.
He also recorded a 65 in the final round of last month's Australian Masters.
Playing in his own charity event for the first time in three years, world number two Woods birdied four of the first nine holes in bright winter sunshine to reach the turn in four-under 32.
He picked up further shots at the 10th, 11th, 13th and 16th to lead by one before his cushion was doubled when US Open champion McDowell bogeyed the tricky 18th.
Woods then pushed his tee shot well right at the last, hacked out on to the fairway with his second and struck his third on to the bottom tier of the green before two-putting for a 5.
"It was a lack of commitment," Woods said of his tee shot on 18. "I couldn't really commit to hitting a low fade off the tee there and hit a pop-up."
Tiger has struggled on and off the course since his private life unravelled at the end of last season amid sordid revelations of serial philandering.
He took a five-month break from the game in an ultimately unsuccessful bid to repair his marriage and embarked on the fourth swing change of his career in August.
