NEW US OPEN CHAMPION McDOWELL RELISHING

RETURN TO THE BARCLAYS SCOTTISH OPEN

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE EUROPEAN TOUR
As newly crowned US Open Champion, Graeme McDowell will have many occasions to look forward to over the next few months but the one the 30 year old Northern Irishman is relishing the most is a return to Loch Lomond for The Barclays Scottish Open from July 8-11.
McDowell has always been a favourite with the Scottish galleries after his superb victory in the tournament in 2008 and he will now return to the Bonnie Banks in style following his dramatic triumph at Pebble Beach where he became the first European golfer to win the US Open in 40 years since Tony Jacklin triumphed at Hazeltine National in 1970.
His level par total of 284, following a final round 74, saw him also became only the second Northern Irishman in history to win a Major Championship, following Fred Daly’s Open Championship triumph of 1947, and the link between the two is even stronger considering both men are from Portrush.
“Winning The Barclays Scottish Open in 2008 is right up there with my best moments in golf and to be coming back to Loch Lomond next month as the US Open Champion will be unbelievable,” said McDowell, who travelled to California on the crest of a wave following his victory in The Celtic Manor Wales Open two weeks ago.
The crowds at Loch Lomond are well used to seeing the world’s best not only play in The Barclays Scottish Open but also win it, and that fact was conclusively borne out by the final results from Pebble Beach which saw not only McDowell, the 2008 champion, triumph, but also Frenchmen Grégory Havret – the 2007 winner – finish second, and last year’s champion, Martin Kaymer of Germany, share eighth.
“It is no secret that Loch Lomond is one of my favourite venues of the entire year on The European Tour,” added McDowell, who moved up from 37th to 13th on the Official World Golf Ranking. “I think it’s fantastic for Barclays and the tournament that Grégory and myself will be playing there having finished first and second at Pebble.”
Runner-up Havret will always be remembered at Loch Lomond for the gutsy showing he put up in 2007, carding a final round 68 to tie Phil Mickelson – who finished tied fourth in California alongside Tiger Woods – before beating the left-handed American in a sudden-death play-off.
“I think it is fair to say that 2007 was the peak of my career so far, and winning The Barclays Scottish Open was definitely the high point of that season,” said Havret. “I beat Phil in a play-off and on Sunday at Pebble Beach I managed to play with Tiger Woods and shoot three shots lower than him.
“I always have special memories of Scotland, having also won the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles, and I can’t wait to go back to Loch Lomond next month alongside Graeme as the top two finishers in the US Open. Who knows? Maybe I can finish in front of him this time.”
Peter Adams, Championship Director of The Barclays Scottish Open, said: “Graeme and Grégory put on a show at Pebble Beach that everyone connected with European golf should be genuinely proud of and we look forward to extending an extra special welcome to them both to Loch Lomond next month.”

Ulsterman McDowell makes US Open breakthrough

FROM THE DAILY TELEGRAPH WEBSITE
By MARK REASON
Graeme McDowell beat the Frenchman Gregory Havret by a shot to become the first man from Northern Ireland to win the US Open and the first Briton since Tony Jacklin 40 years ago.
The 30 feet left on the final green must have looked like a furlong, but McDowell somehow managed to cling onto his putter for victory.
Four hours earlier McDowell had walked onto the first tee in a grey cardigan and wondered if the dude still had his game. Four holes later Dustin Johnson was all but out of the US Open and McDowell was the man left out in the lead. Pebble Beach has a terrible threatening beauty when all a man’s soul craves is par.
Remember when Dr Gil Morgan was on a tear 18 years ago? OK, maybe not, but the good doctor ended up having to give himself mouth to mouth. He choked like an 18 handicapper. The final round of the US Open can turn a sane man’s brain to tinder.
McDowell proved to himself and to America that he has what the Yanks like to call internal fortitude. He may not quite strut about the property like Tony Jacklin at Hazeltine in 1970 but McDowell has the narrow eyed concentration of a man used to staring at the sun.
For some of the afternoon he was challenged by Ernie Els. The South African has already won two of these things, but he frittered three shots away round the turn. The man now chasing McDowell was Havret who was not in the slightest bit bothered by playing with Tiger Woods.
One American had loudly wondered on Saturday who that guy ‘Harvey’ was. The answer is that Havret is the Frenchman who beat Phil Mickelson in a play-off to win the 2007 Scottish Open.
He is the man who said before the final round of the US Open: “I know too well that golf can be hell or paradise.”
It was hell for the 6ft 4in dude with sawdust behind the eyes. McDowell had wondered how Johnson would sleep on a three-shot lead and the answer was like a man whose bed was on fire.
Johnson began to smoulder on the second hole. At first there was just a little smoke when the big man pushed his approach towards the bunker. For all the good fortune that Johnson enjoyed on Saturday, he found his ball deep in the fescue on the forward edge of the bunker.
The American couldn’t take a stance right-handed, so he turned his blade round and swished left-handed. This is a bloke who is reputed to be able to drive the ball almost as far left-handed as he can with his normal 320 yard swipe. On this occasion he managed to move his ball forwards about three yards.
By now the flames were licking rounds his shoes. Johnson, back to right-handed now, very nearly went under the ball completely.
A quiet curse crept out of his mouth. Look away now children. Johnson played the next chip very quickly and missed the short putt with an ugly push to the right. It all added up to a seven and his three shot lead was gone.
Where was caddie Bobby Brown now? Referring to Johnson’s two recent wins at the AT&T Brown had said earlier in the tournament: “Dude, whoever says winning at Pebble Beach before is not a factor is full of it. Dude, there’s a vibe here. I can feel it and Dustin can feel it.”
Dustin was certainly feeling it now. On the third tee he hooked his three-wood wildly to the left and lost the ball. The poor man was now like a tall building ablaze. Where was the fire brigade? Johnson’s caddie should have stepped in on the previous green and hosed his man down but he was nowhere to be seen.
Woods had hit an even wilder snap hook off the same tee. It was a sign of shots to come. Tiger’s game is creeping back – his third- round 66 was proof of that – but there are still too many ghosts in the machine. He has still never won a major coming from behind in the last round.
No one had ever won a US Open at Pebble Beach coming from more than a shot behind. As Johnson fell towards the rocks, McDowell and Havret were the men keeping their head above sea level.
