Overnight challenger Ross Drummond has 83 in final round

Bland triumphs in The Ryder Cup Wales Seniors Open

By SARAH GWYNN
European Tour Press Officer
South African John Bland produced a fine finish to claim his third European Senior Tour title with a one shot victory in The Ryder Cup Wales Seniors Open at Royal Porthcawl.
The 64 year old carded a one under par 71 in the final round, seeing off Paraguayan Angel Franco in dramatic fashion. The pair were neck and neck at eight under after 16 holes, but Franco, three groups ahead of Bland, bogeyed the 18th and then the South African birdied the par five 17th to give himself some breathing space coming up the last. It proved crucial, as Bland found a bunker from the tee and ended up with a bogey.
Bland’s compatriot Chris Williams took a share of second place after a level par 72, but overnight leader Bob Cameron capitulated on the back nine, carding four straight bogeys and two double bogeys for a 78.The challenges of Scottish duo Ross Drummond and Gordon Brand Jnr, in contention overnight, also faltered with rounds of 83 and 75 respectively.
Bland, who fired three birdies and an eagle to make it a second successive South African winner in this event following Bertus Smit, said: “The course was very tricky today but I handled it well and did everything right – except for the last when I found a bunker and got a little nervous.
“The key to it was to get the right club. Sometimes you can’t believe how far the ball is going on this course. The birdie on the 17th was a big one. I was hanging around one or two shots behind most of the day and on the 16th I realised Mr Franco had dropped a shot on the 18th.
“So to make that birdie on the 17th was massive - and just as well I did as I did that silly thing on the last.
“This is one of the finest links courses in the world and the players really enjoy coming here. There’s not a bad hole on the course, it’s magnificent. It’s been a great week and I’m delighted to round it off by winning.”
Asked what the key to the success for South Africans in this event was, Bland replied: “I don’t know, but it’s been a good couple of years for us, and it’s been a good couple of weeks with the Springboks here in Wales and winning. It’s a shame the football team isn’t doing so well in the World Cup but I’m more of a rugby man myself.
“The World Cup looks to be going very well back home though and it seems they’ve done a very good job staging it.”
Franco had a stunning run of five birdies from the fourth and picked up another shot at the par five 12th although back-to-back bogeys at the 14th and 15th put him back at eight under. The turning point of the round came at the 18th, where a bogey proved costly.
“It’s very disappointing, particularly as John ended up bogeying the last too,” said Franco, who has finished runner-up six times on the Senior Tour.

He picked up birdies at the first, second, ninth and 12th and his only dropped shot today - a bogey on the par four 18th - did not prove costly.

Birdie king Baker wins on Challenge Tour debut

From Challenge Tour Press Officer Paul Symes
American Christopher Ryan Baker became only the tenth player in history to win on his Challenge Tour debut when he captured the Moroccan Golf Classic title by two strokes.
A closing round of 68 for a winning 13 under par aggregate score saw Baker join the exclusive club, which includes such luminaries as Northern Ireland’s Darren Clarke, South African Trevor Immelman, Germany’s Martin Kaymer and Italian Edoardo Molinari.
Baker had started the day two shots off the lead held by Jesus Maria Arruti, but four birdies in an immaculate round of golf at Pullman Mazagan Royal Golf and Spa in El Jadida, Morocco, were good enough to take the title by two shots from the Spaniard, who had to settle for a share of second place alongside Argentine Julio Zapata.
The 21 year old, who becomes the first American winner on the Challenge Tour since Kevin Stadler won – also on his debut – in Argentina in 2006, must now decide whether or not to accept the one-year exemption offered to all winners on the Challenge Tour.
Baker, who received a winner’s cheque for €24,000 winner’s, said: “I couldn’t feel any happier than I do right now – winning’s a great feeling, especially on my Challenge Tour debut. It’s a great Tour with a lot of very good players out here, so I’m very proud of myself. I wasn’t pleased with how I played yesterday, but today was much more like it. I struck the ball really well, and only missed one green all day.
“My second shot to the 16th hole was probably the turning point today. I hit a three iron to six inches, and that birdie gave me some breathing space coming down the last two holes. I still felt a little nervous and pushed my tee shots on the 17th and 18th out to the right, but managed to recover well and get the job done.
“There are 11 of us over from the States this week, so I’m sure we’ll have a few drinks to celebrate tonight. Then I’ll have to sit down and decide what to do next. I might play in Spain next week, then after that, who knows? As I said the Challenge Tour is a great Tour, so it’s very tempting. I might decide after a few beers tonight!”
A round of 65 – the lowest of the day – saw England’s Matthew Baldwin surge through the field to take a share of fourth place on ten under par 278 with Dutchman Richard Kind who signed for a closing 70.

UNITED STATES OPEN REPORT AND SCORES

McDowell three behind leader Johnson - but Tiger lying third

FROM THE AOL GOLF NEWS SERVICE
Graeme McDowell saw Dustin Johnson snatch the US Open lead from his grasp on Saturday night as Tiger Woods entered the championship fray.
Northern Ireland's McDowell was a two-shot leader at the start of the day and was four shots ahead after two holes before Johnson, twice a winner at Pebble Beach in February on the US PGA Tour, made his local knowledge count.
The American's five-under-par 66 gave him the 54-hole lead at six under, three shots better than McDowell, who posted a level-par 71 and was not overly disappointed. "I'd rather be three shots in front, of course," McDowell said. "But I shot 71 not being in control of my game and I've got to be pretty happy with that.
"It's going to be a fun day tomorrow (Sunday)."
Five behind Johnson, Woods showed a glimpse of a return to form as he posted a 66 on the course where he won by a majors' record 15 strokes at the 2000 US Open and Gregory Havret of France booked a tee time with the world number one in Sunday's penultimate group after a 69 got him to level par.
Two-time winner Ernie Els is also level after a 72 with Masters champion Phil Mickelson a shot behind the South African after a rollercoaster 73, two shots ahead of Tim Clark, Alex Cejka and Ryo Ishikawa.
Mickelson had wowed Pebble Beach with his second-round 66 and on Saturday it was Woods' turn.
Starting seven strokes behind McDowell, he had been searching for lost form following an on-course struggle of late that was pre-empted by turmoil in his private life.
After carding three birdies and three bogeys on his front nine, Woods' struggles seemed to be continuing but he changed gears, delivering five birdies on the supposedly more difficult back nine to come home in 31, closing birdie, birdie, birdie.
England's Paul Casey, a first-round co-leader, posted a 77 to drop to six over, while Ian Poulter also hit 77 to fall to seven over in a tie for 23rd with, amongst others, Ryder Cup team-mates Padraig Harrington (74) and Luke Donald (74).
