Villegas wins by five from Kim with Rose third

FROM THE AOL GOLF NEWS SERVICE
Colombian Camilo Villegas landed the Honda Classic title at Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, after holding off a European challenge led by Justin Rose.
Rose shot a sparkling six-under-par 64 in his final round to jump to third place on seven under for the tournament, and fellow Englishman Paul Casey finished a shot behind in a share of fourth place with Fiji's Vijay Singh.
However Villegas was not prepared to let his hard-earned lead slip away and he won by five shots from second-placed American Anthony Kim, landing his third US PGA Tour title and a million-dollar pay day.
Villegas did drop three strokes in five holes on the back nine, however he finished in style with a long putt for birdie at the 18th to card a round of 68 and a total of 13 under for his week.
That score put him five shots in front of Kim, who followed up Saturday's disappointing 73 with a much-improved 67.
Rose's round equalled the course record and contained seven birdies, of which five came in his first six holes.
However due to his slow start to the tournament - he was two over par after his opening two rounds - he had left it too late to get close to Villegas.
The performance earned Rose over £250,000 but was not enough to qualify him for this coming week's CA world championship in Miami. The former European number one remains outside the world's top 50.
Casey, who followed his opening 73 with a second-round 64, again went under par on Sunday with a classy 67 which included four birdies in five holes from the 12th to 16th. Another Englishman in the top 10 was Lee Westwood with a 68 for 278 and joint ninth position
Singh's challenge faltered as he made bogeys at 15, 16 and 17 in a two-over round of 72.
Palm Beach Gardens, Florida
Aussie Nathan Green, in second place at the start of the last round, had a double bogey at the short 15th and a triple bogey at the short 17th in taking 41 shots for the inward journey. He finished joint 12th with a 77 for 279.

Fred Couples in driving seat back for another Senior win

Long-hitting rookie senior Fred Couples is hot favourite to chalk up his second straight US Champions (Seniors) Tour victory after notching an impressive seven-under-par 64 in Saturday's second round to take a two-stroke lead in the Toshiba Classic at Newport Beach, California.
Couples, making his third start on the 50-and-over tour, has a 12-under 130 total.
Laid-back Fred won the ACE Group Classic on February 14 in Florida and finished second behind Tom Watson in the season-opening event in Hawaii. Last week, Couples tied for 14th in the US PGA Tour’s Phoenix Open.
Tom Lehman (65) and Taiwan’s Chien Soon Lu (67) are tied for second. Loren Roberts (67) and Ronnie Black (67) followed at 8 under, and defending champion Eduardo Romero (69), John Cook (66), Bob Gilder (66) and Mark Wiebe (71) were 6 under.
Couples and Lehman are first and second in driving distance for the event, though they are vastly different in driving accuracy. Lehman is tied for eighth, while Couples is 73rd out of the 78 players, which means he misses more than the odd fairway!
Apparently, Couples didn’t need to hit them to score in the Toshiba Classic to score. He hit five of 14 fairways, but only made birdies on two of those holes, Nos. 2 and 7.
“I drove it in the rough several times,” Couples said. “I wasn’t blasting them all over the golf course, but yes, I was three or four steps in the rough several times.”
Play started two hours early to try and avoid rain, but there was still a suspension of 71 minutes because of a downpour early in the day.
That actually helped the leaders because the delay was before they teed off and when they began play, the greens were noticeably softer and much more receptive.
The softer greens, though, were tempered by gusty wind.
“It was hard, it was cold,” Couples said. “You are trying to draw them into the wind, then I just started hitting them hard. I was driving it so good yesterday.”
Couples began the second round a stroke behind but was tied by the second hole after a 1-foot birdie putt. He took the lead with an eagle on the 549yd, par-5 second, reaching the green with a 2-iron for his second shot and making a 12ft putt.
His birdie on No. 9 was set up by probably his best shot. He found the rough on the right off the tee and had several trees between him and the green. Couples then hit an 8-iron through a small gap in the trees that came to rest 4 feet from the cup.
Couples’ driver cost him on 10, leading to his lone bogey of the day.
That allowed the field to creep closer and when Couples reached the 14th hole, there was a four-way tie with Lu, Lehman and Roberts. Couples broke the logjam with a 5-foot birdie putt on the par-5 15th and extended his lead to two when he made a 20-footer from above the hole on No. 16.
Couples kept the margin at two when he made a 15-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole. It was one of only 12 birdies on the hole that yielded 41 birdies in the first round.
Couples is 50 under par on the Champions Tour and every one of his eight rounds has been 68 or lower.
Lehman’s first full year on the Champions Tour is going equally well. He has eight rounds in the 60s and is 40 under through eight rounds, but catching the tour’s hottest player will be difficult.
“I know he is going to be 20 or 30 yards past me on every tee shot,” Lehman said. “It’s good to see him playing well.”

Ex-kick boxer Ruangkit wins Brunei Senior Masters

By PAUL SYMES, European Seniors Tour Press Officer
Thailand’s Boonchu Ruangkit continued the trend of first-time winners on the 2010 European Senior Tour Schedule with today's maiden victory at The Aberdeen Brunei Senior Masters presented by The Stapleford Forum.
Following Englishman Kevin Spurgeon’s maiden victory at the season-opening Mauritius Commercial Bank Open, Ruangkit entered the winner’s enclosure on a day of high drama at The Empire Hotel and Country Club in Brunei.
After the Thai ace and joint overnight leader Frankie Minoza of the Philippines – also seeking his maiden Senior Tour debut – had both signed for rounds of 66 to finish level on 14 under par, Ruangkit must have feared history was about to repeat itself.
At the same venue twelve months previously, Ruangkit had lost out in a play-off at the Brunei Open on the Asian Tour. But on this occasion, the 53 year old held his nerve to see off Minoza at the second extra hole and collect the €44,332 first prize.
He said: “I’m very happy to win my first Senior Tour title – it has given me great confidence. Even though I lost the Brunei Open here last year I still really like this course, because it’s been good to me. I really like Brunei, because I play well every time I come here. Maybe it’s because of the hot weather, which I’m used to!
“I was very nervous for the play-off, and it didn’t help that the wind started to blow a little. But I managed to control my nerves, and I’m just so happy to have won – although I feel a little sorry for Frankie, because he played very well today. I didn’t think I could beat him, to be honest. On most of the par fives he was only using a four or five iron for his second shot, whilst I was using a three wood. But I got the job done, and it feels great.”
Despite his initial reservations, Ruangkit got off to a flying start with a birdie at the first and an eagle three at the next hole, where Minoza also picked up his first shot of the day. The duo continued to trade birdies until the 14th hole, where a bogey from Minoza handed Ruangkit the initiative.
The former kick boxer, who turned to golf after being knocked out in his third bout, then appeared to land a telling blow on the 17th hole, where a birdie 3 handed him a two-shot advantage going down the last.
But a costly bogey combined with a birdie for Minoza led to the first play-off of the 2010 Senior Tour season, which Ruangkit won with a par at the second extra hole after both men had parred the first.
A round of 68 saw South African Chris Williams finish in a tie for third place on 11 under par, with Roger Chapman a further two shots back on nine under after the Englishman compiled a round of 66. The lowest round of the day was provided by Scotland’s Sam Torrance, who shot a 65 to finish alongside American Jerry Bruner in a tie for fifth place on seven under par.

Teenage South Korean wins

Rhys Davies finishes joint 3rd

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE ASIAN TOUR
Kuala Lumpur. South Korean teen sensation Noh Seung-yul secured a dramatic one-stroke victory over illustrious countryman K J Choi at the Maybank Malaysian Open after pulling off an audacious final-hole birdie today.
The 18-year-old Noh produced the unlikeliest of birdies at the par-5 634yd 18th hole to close out the US$2 million tournament with a final round four-under-par 68 and a 14-under-par 274 winning aggregate.
“This is more special than my first win,” said Noh, who was triumphant at the 2008 Midea China Classic en route to becoming the Asian Tour’s Rookie of the Year that season.
Standing on the 634yd 18th tee with a one stroke advantage over Choi, Soren Hansen, Kiradech Aphibarnrat and Rhys Davies, Noh hooked his drive wildly onto the 10th fairway. With Choi and Hansen playing in front of him, and Aphibarnrat and Davies playing alongside him, Noh was under huge pressure as he fired his drive miles left off the tee.
His three wood second shot also stayed well left, flying over the Maybank hospitality unit to the left of the 18th green and eventually coming to rest on the concrete cart path, some 30 yards from the green. As spectators flocked around his ball, Choi, a seven-time winner on the PGA Tour, tied Noh on 13-under with a five foot birdie putt and pile the pressure on Noh.
After being granted relief from the cart path, the young South Korean stayed cool under pressure and hit a sublime chip shot over the left-hand bunker to within 18 inches of the hole to send the crowd into rapturous applause before tapping in for his second Asian Tour and maiden European Tour success.
Edinburgh-born Welshman Rhys Davies finished joint third.
It was fun competing with the top players in the world and defeating someone I look up to. When K.J. birdied the last hole and became the co-leader, I thought that if I parred (18) I would get into the play-off. And if I lost in the play-off, it wouldn’t disappoint me too much because I was competing against K.J. And if he won, then I would also be happy because he is from the same country.
“It was so hot and I wasn’t in the right mind to think. I just kept it simple and I wanted to get it on the green on 18 and make par. The fact that K.J. made birdie and I was able to come out with a win is very special to me.”
The experienced Choi, winner of the Iskandar Johor O pen in Malaysia last October, tipped his cap to his young compatriot, saying Noh was truly a star in the making. “I’m not disappointed at all,” said Choi, who signed off with a 69.
“I played well and tried my best. My hat off to Seung-yul as he played well and had a fantastic round. I’m happy with how my game has improved and I have a lot to look forward to. The pin positions were tough but I held my game and managed to be in contention. Noh played brilliantly and I have no complaints.
“He is one of the most powerful young talents coming up. The way that he controls and hits the ball is like no other and I think he has a very bright future. He’s got a very good heart as well. I feel like he is going to develop in all aspects and in the near future he is going to be on the world stage,” added Choi, who is an honorary member of the Asian Tour.
Co-overnight leader Kiradech, chasing a maiden Asian Tour victory, fought hard but eventually settled for a share of third place with Hansen and Davies on 276. The Thai and Davies signed off with a 71 while Hansen shot a 70.
“I guess that 15-under would have been the winning score. I was 13-under at one point but bogeyed the eighth and I birdied again after the turn and thought I was on course to a win. But I made another bogey on 13 which was disappointing,” said the 20-year-old.
“The win was there for me because I was playing very well. I had many up and downs but I struggled with my putting on the back nine. I seem to always lose it on the last day, I don’t know why,” he added.
*Aged 18 years and nine months, Noh is the second youngest winner ever on the European Tour. The only younger winner was New Zealand amateur Danny Lee, who took last year's Johnnie Walker Classic aged 18 years and six months. Noh was playing his 13th European Tour event. His debut came in China when he was 16 - and he finished eighth that week.

Villegas goes three shots clear in Honda Classic

FROM THE AOL GOLF NEWS SERVICE
Camilo Villegas will take a three-shot lead into the final round of the Honda Classic at Palm Beach after maintaining his consistent scoring with a 67.
The Colombian shared the lead with Anthony Kim at the start of play but, while the American Ryder Cup star struggled to three over par for his round, Villegas shot three under to move clear on 11 under.
Australia's Nathan Green shares second place with Vijay Singh on eight under, while American George McNeill equalled the best round of the day, 66, to join compatriot Matt Every at six under.
Villegas had shot back-to-back 66s on the first two days and continued his impressive form with birdies at the third, fourth, sixth and ninth on a blemish-free outward half.
He found it harder going after the turn, but counter-balanced bogeys at the 10th, 12th and 14th with birdies at 11 and 16 to give himself a more than useful cushion.
Kim's largely tidy round was ruined by two sets of miserable holes. Having birdied the third, he haemorrhaged three shots at the sixth and seventh with a double-bogey six followed by a bogey four.
Having regained his composure to birdie 11 and 13 and return to level par for his round, he then undid his good work by closing with three successive bogeys, including a horribly fluffed chip at the last, and is surely now out of the running at six shots back.
Green set off in great style with birdies at the first two holes and gained another shot at the seventh to make it an excellent front nine. A further birdie followed at 15 and his hitherto immaculate scorecard was only marred by a 6 at the par-5 18th.
