Three share lead on six-under 65 in Toshiba Seniors Classic

REPORT FROM US CHAMPIONS TOUR
Bob Tway, Chein Soon Lu and Mark Wiebe shared the first-day lead with six-under-par 65s in the US Champions (Seniors) Tour's Toshiba Classic at Newport Beach Country Club, California.
Over-50s rookie Fred Couples was a shot off the pace.
Olin Browne, Lonnie Nielsen and Mike Goodes matched Couples at 66, and defending champion Eduardo Romero was another stroke back along with Tom Lehman, Loren Roberts, Wayne Levi, Ronnie Black, D.A. Weibring, Bobby Wadkins and Gary Hallberg.
Wiebe, bothered by a head cold, had his first bogey-free round of the season, making five birdies on his first nine holes – the back nine.
“I didn’t know it was bogey-free until my caddie told me on the last hole after I picked my ball out of the cup,” Wiebe said. “I had no idea, which kind of tells me that my head was in the right place.”
Tway missed from a foot on No. 11 for his lone bogey.
“I hit a very good second shot and I hit my first putt about a foot by,” Tway said. “It was kind of in a footprint and I missed about a foot putt, so that was disappointing.”
Wiebe was thrilled with his round, especially because of the way he was feeling.
“Your expectations are pretty low when you don’t feel well,” Wiebe said. “I thought if I can just focus and keep my focus it would be great.”
Wiebe had 12 one-putt greens and only 24 putts overall.
“I putted really well,” Wiebe said. “I had a great feel with my putting. The pace was really good. I didn’t let anything good get too far away from me.”
Lu has conditional status on the Champions Tour and earned a spot in the field with a top-10 finish – a ninth-place tie – two weeks ago in the Allianz Championship.
It was Tway’s first competitive round on the course.
“You kind of get to know it,” said Tway, who played one practice round and two pro-am rounds. “I had a couple of local guys, members here in the pro-ams. They helped me a little bit about some of the breaks, the tendencies, so that was good.”
Couples is making his third Champions Tour start. He won the ACE Group Classic on Feb. 14 in Naples, Fla., and finished second behind Tom Watson in the season-opening event in Hawaii. Couples tied for 14th last week in the PGA Tour’s Phoenix Open.
The long-hitting Couples, leading the tour’s driving distance stat at 300.2 yards, overpowered the 6,584yd course set for the seniors. He used driver on every par 4 and 5 except two holes and had nothing more than a 9-iron for his second shot.
“I hit a wedge on my first hole,” Couples said. “I made a 20-footer, which was a great start. ... I feel good about the round. I probably couldn’t have gotten much more out of it.”
Wiebe was just happy to get through his round.
“When I made my last putt I looked at my caddie, he said, ‘Nice playing,’” Wiebe said. “I said, ‘I’m glad it’s over. I want to go lay down.’”

Fotheringham, Harkins held up by rain Down Under

Scots Fraser Fotheringham from Nairn and Ayr Belleisle's Chris Harkins have still to complete their second rounds in the rain-hit Riversdale Cup tournament at Riversdale Golf Club, Victoria in Australia.
Harkins had a 76 in the first round and Fotheringham a 78 so both have to work hard if they are to make the halfway cut, which will not be until play resumes on Sunday morning.
Aussie Jordan Zunich has had rounds of 74 and 65 to lead on 139, one shot ahead of five players at the moment.
Stephen Speirs, a Scot who emigrated to Australia a few years back, has a 36-hole tally of 143 (71-72) so should figure in the last two rounds of this prestigious 72-hole open tournament.

Quadrangular tie-breaker rules make Italy champions

Beaten Scots pipped for boys' title

Scotland lost their final match narrowly (5-4) to Italy - their first defeat over the three days -
and, despite having a superior "goal difference" - were also pipped by the Italians for the boys' quadrangular title at Chiberta Golf Club, Biarritz, in southwest France today.
Scotland and Italy both finished with two wins and one defeat. In most competitions, the Scots would have won the title on the countback of individual games won-lost. The Scots finished +4 in this respect (15 1/2-11 1/2) while Italy were -2 (11 1/2-13 1/2).
But under the rules of the quadrangular tournament, in the event of a tie, the result in the match between the two teams who have the same number of points is the tie-breaker. So Italy, having shattered the teenage Scots' 100 per cent record, scored a double whammy. Their win also gave them the title.
Hard luck on the Under-18 Scots. So near, yet so far. For Italy it represented a tremendous comeback from a 6-1 defeat by Sweden on Day 2.
In the other match of the closing programme, the host nation, France, found their form too late, beating Sweden 7-2 for their only win.
Jack McDonald (Kilmarnock Barassie), the reigning Scottish boys' open stroke-play championship, was the top points scorer for manager Stuart Wilson's squad. Jack won twice today, giving him a final record of five wins from six games.
Grant Forrest (Craigielaw), the Scottish Under-16 champion, was Scotland's second most successful performer with 4 1/2 pt, just ahead of Calum Stewart (Brora) who had four wins out of six.
Ian Redford (St Andrews New) and Scott Gibson (Southerness) collected 3pt apiece while Jack Scott (Deeside) gained a 1/2pt

Edinburgh-born Rhys Davies in contention for

first pro victory in Maybank Malaysian Open

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Rising Welsh star Rhys Davies (who was actually born in Edinburgh) remained on course for a maiden European Tour title at the Maybank Malaysian Open after earning a share of a one shot lead alongside Thailand's Kiradech Aphibarnrat at the top of a tightly congested third round leaderboard.
Challenge Tour graduate and former Walker Cup amateur Davies, 24, carded a one under par 71 to join fast finishing 20 year old Kiradech, who birdied three of his final four holes of a 68, at 11 under par on the third day at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club.
K J Choi (69), Søren Hansen (69) and Asian number one Thongchai Jaidee (69) head the chasing pack alongside 18 year old South Korean Noh Seung-yul (67) with Alejandro Cañizares (71) and Johan Edfors (69) just a shot further adrift and Ignacio Garrido (71) rounding out the tight top ten at eight under.
“It’s good pressure to be up there. If I shoot the best score tomorrow then I win, that’s a good thing,” said World Number 135 Davies.
“There are a number of great players up there so it is up to me to worry about my own game and try not to worry about them. If I score lower than them then I will come out on top.”
Joint first round leader Davies earlier completed a three under par second round following yesterday's lighting delay to lead by two shots at the halfway mark.
But he slipped off the pace after a double bogey at the start of his back nine, having hitting his tee shot into water.
The two time Challenge Tour winner, though, earned a share of the lead to keep his bid for victory alive with a 30 foot birdie putt at the 17th.
And Davies, who actually cut his teeth on the Asian Tour in 2008 with three top ten finishes, missed out on claiming the outright lead as an eight foot effort at the last lipped out.
“My temperament has been good all week and I have listened to my mind and body to stay on top of things,” added Davies.
“I drove the ball well which is a big plus for me. I usually putt well and I did putt well. Not many went in, but I did hit a lot of them on line.”
World Number 231 Kiradech capped his storming finish with a ten foot conversion at the last.
“My driving was better, my ball striking has been improving these past three days and that has played a part in my good performance,” said Kiradech.
“I missed a couple of putts on the back nine but three birdies in the last four holes is a good way to finish.”
Choi, World Number 96, missed out on a chance to share the overnight lead after missing from eight feet at the last following a superb approach from a fairway bunker.
“I have put myself in position, I like where I am,” said the 39 year old South Korean. “Yesterday and today I just sweated so much I feel weary. I just need to overcome the heat for one more day and try to close it out.
“There are a lot of players crammed up and it's anybody's game. The key thing is to maintain what I'm doing, keep up the pros and if I'm able to do that, there will be a chance and whoever takes the chance will win.”
Hansen was similarly optimistic about his chances of overhauling the leaders.
“I didn't think anyone was going to run away with it today. It's certainly a marathon this week and not a sprint. See what happens tomorrow,” he said.

Flying Filipino Minoza bids for glory in Brunei

By PAUL SYMES, European Seniors Tour Press Officer
Flying Filipino Frankie Minoza joined joint overnight leader Boonchu Ruangkit of Thailand at the top of the leaderboard on day two of The Aberdeen Brunei Senior Masters presented by the Stapleford Forum.
On another day of soaring temperatures at the Empire Hotel and Country Club in Brunei, Senior Tour debutant Minoza carded a joint lowest of the day 66 to move to nine under par, level with Ruangkit.
Minoza, who won the 2007 Philippines Open aged 46 to claim his maiden Asian Tour title, notched three birdies either side of the turn, with the only blip coming at the par four eighth hole. The 50 year old will now bid to become the first player to triumph on his Senior Tour debut since American Michael Allen won the 2009 US Senior PGA Championship.
He said: “I’m obviously happy to be in the lead. My all-round game was good today, particularly my driving. The course is really good – it’s just the humidity that’s the problem. It’s lucky we’re using buggies between holes! Tomorrow I just need to play my normal game and take it shot by shot, hole by hole. I’m confident I can win the title, but this game is crazy so you never know until it’s finished.”
Minoza will be paired in the final round by Ruangkit, who would have held the lead outright were it not for a bogey on the final hole. The Thai ace was unable to reproduce the fireworks of the opening day, when he shot a 64, but three birdies in a round of 69 have still put him in sight of his maiden Senior Tour title.
He said: “I lost in the play-off during last year’s Brunei Open, so I know this course well and it suits my game. Obviously it was disappointing to bogey the last hole, but apart from that I played well. I’m happy with my game, but I think Frankie could shine tomorrow. He’s a big hitter, whereas my driving wasn’t so good today. So I’m not very confident of winning, because Frankie’s playing so well! But we’ll see.”
South African Chris Williams is hot on the leaders’ tails after carding six birdies in a round of 66 to move to eight under par, whilst overnight leader David Merriman slipped back to fourth place on seven under par after signing for a level par round of 71.
A round of 66 saw American Jerry Bruner join Japan’s Katsuyoshi Tomori in a share of fifth place on six under par, with England’s Roger Chapman, defending champion Mike Cunning of America and South African Bobby Lincoln a further two shots back in tied seventh.
European Tour champion Chapman, who shot a level par round of 71, said: “I’m coping ok with heat, drinking about 15 bottles of water and the buggies definitely help. I’ve been in South Africa for three weeks on holiday and did a bit of practising out there, so I got used to the heat. I also played in Asia on The European Tour so know what to expect, and I also believe that next week in Thailand is meant to be even hotter, so that should be interesting!”
Further down the field, Scotland’s Sam Torrance and Wales’ Ian Woosnam – who between them have won the John Jacobs Trophy in four of the last five years – enjoyed better days, carding respective rounds of 68 and 69 to finish on one under par.
Woosnam said: “I played a little bit nicer today – I think I only missed about three greens. In the end it could’ve been a little bit better than a 69, but I was just really pleased to play a little bit better than yesterday and hopefully tomorrow I can get a little bit more confidence and go even lower. When you’re struggling a little bit with your game you keep trying different things, and then when something works you get a get a bit more confidence and start playing well again, so hopefully that’s what’ll happen on the final day.”
His fellow Masters Tournament winner Sandy Lyle of Scotland carded a round of 72 to finish on three over par.
