Funk leads by three from Torrance at

halfway in Seniors Open at Sunningdale

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Fred Funk set a record low halfway total at The Senior Open Championship presented by MasterCard but Sunningdale expert Sam Torrance is hot on his heels going into the weekend.
Both men carded sublime rounds of 65 to leave 53 year old American Funk 11 under, with Scotland’s Torrance three behind.
Funk recorded an eagle 2 at the par 4 18th after he holed out with a 174yd eight iron to reach 11 under after 36 holes, one better than anyone has managed at a Senior Open Championship before.
That capped a flawless round as the former US Ryder Cup player shot three birdies without dropping a stroke for the second day running.
“I don't feel like I shot 65,” said Funk. “It's just the way it all added up at the end.
“When you do what I did at the finish and then all of a sudden you're five under par, you go, wow, where did that come from?
“It wasn't like I walked off thinking I shot this great round, although it was a round I would have loved to have before I teed off, that's for sure.
“I birdied 16 and holed a shot on 18 and all of a sudden it looks like a great round that I played,” added Funk – who reached halfway with an impressive 129 aggregate for the second time in three tournaments, although at The Dick’s Sporting Goods Open last month he could only go on to tie for second.
“There's a lot of golf to be played, but yeah, I'm playing well. If I keep doing what I'm doing and especially putt as well as I've been putting, I will be hard to catch.”
Torrance, who lives in nearby Virginia Water and knows Sunningdale’s Old Course “like the back of my hand”, birdied the first and fourth after Funk had already set the clubhouse target at 11 under before a 2hr delay for a thunder storm.
After a gutsy par putt at the seventh Torrance looked in trouble at the eighth when his tee shot found the large greenside bunker but he splashed out to six feet and again held his nerve.
“I would have been miles behind if I’d bogeyed them both,” he said. “You can’t look at it that way.”
That sparked a spectacular run of birdie-birdie-par-birdie after the turn which propelled the former Ryder Cup captain into second place, although a shanked approach to the 16th cost him a shot.
That was put right with a birdie at the 17th and after finding trouble at the last Torrance got up and down for par.
“It’s not pay day, there’s still two more days to go,” Torrance added.
“I know the greens better than anyone, I had good speed with the putter today.”
America’s Loren Roberts, the 2006 winner of this event at Turnberry, sits third after a 68 took him to six under, one better than his compatriots Mike Allen and Tom Kite.

McNicoll finishes jt 26th in South of

England Open at Walton Heath

Carnoustie's Keir Nicoll suffered the highs and lows of golf on the final of the South of England Amateur Open championship at Walton Heath on Thursday.
Keir, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, followed a pair of 73s for 146 - which made him the only Scot to survive the halfway cut - with a third-round 68 which hoisted him well up the field ... only for him to drop back down again to a final placing of joint 26th with a closing round of 78 for 292, six over the combined par for the Old Course (71) and the New Course (72)
We can now tell you the top 10 or so totals, the Walton Heath Golf Club computer, which "crashed" on Thursday before it could put out the final totals, coming back on line today.

SURRY FROM THE FRINGE GOES TOP

(heading devised by Scott Crockett, European Tour Chief Press Officer)
A chip in from the fringe at the fourth hole helped Steve Surry take the second-round lead in the SWALEC Wales Challenge at The Vale Hotel Golf and Spa Resort near Cardiff, the Englishman also showing there was no substitute for success.
The 27 year old from Bath currently leads the EuroPro Tour Order of Merit, after winning the opening event of the season at Collingtree Park and recording another couple of top ten finishes, and carried on tapping into the rich vein of form on the European Challenge Tour circuit with a second consecutive 71 for a two under par total of 142.
It gave Surry a one-shot clubhouse lead over Spaniard Jorge Campillo and overnight leader Matthew Cort of England, but also bucked the general trend at the National Course where most players struggled to cope with the demands of the 7,266 yard layout playing its full length thanks to pre-tournament rain and heavy showers.
“The key in difficult conditions is that you have to strike the ball well and I feel like I’ve been doing that over the first two days,” said Surry who, aside from his masterstroke at the fourth, also birdied the demanding 16th and 17th holes, no mean feat on holes playing on average well over their par of four.
Another key for the Englishman was the presence of his Cumberwell Park clubmate Harry Bird as caddie, a vital element in helping keep his clubs and equipment dry in the rain, Bird having also been on the bag during his climb to the top of the EuroPro Tour rankings.
“It does help a lot because having to cope with umbrellas and everything like that is not easy when you are on your own,” said Surry, adding, “I’d better say that of course considering he is standing here listening to this conversation!”
Second placed Campillo, who finished fifth in the Credit Suisse Challenge three weeks ago, admitted his four years at college in Indiana had stood him in good stead for being able to play in difficult conditions.
“Coming from Spain, it is obvious that I prefer playing in warm sunshine but my time in Indiana certainly taught me how to cope with other things, especially wind as it can get very windy there,” he said.
The 23 year old Spaniard carded four birdies in total in his second round 71, which he added to his opening 72, the highlight being chip ins at both the fifth and seventh holes, which helped make up for his only real mistake of the day at the par five 13th where he made double bogey seven after pulling his second shot into the water hazard.
Campillo was joined in second spot by one of the overnight leaders, England’s Matthew Cort, who could not quite reproduce the fireworks of his opening 68 but the 34 year old from Leicester admirably steadied his ship after a rocky first ten holes, eight pars to finish seeing him card a 75 for a one under par total of 143.

SENIOR OPEN TEES OFF AT SUNNINGDALE

Fred Funk's 64 gives him two-stroke

lead as Tom Watson returns a 67

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Fred Funk carded the lowest-ever opening round in history of The Senior Open Championship presented by MasterCard as Tom Watson responded to his Open Championship play-off heartache with a 67.
American Funk’s 64 at Sunningdale gave him a two-shot cushion over compatriots Jay Haas and Loren Roberts - the winner of this event in 2006 on the same course Watson almost made history on Sunday - Ireland's Des Smyth and South African Chris Williams.
The 59 year old Watson, who came agonisingly close to becoming the oldest major winner in history before missing out to Stewart Cink, insisted it was not difficult to put that disappointment behind him after his three under par round.
"That was a big story last week for me," said Watson, who is looking to win this title for the fourth time. "But here it's a different story this week. I've got to write it - let's get on with it."
There was no sign of the putting nerves that appeared to get the better of him on the final hole at Turnberry over the opening holes at Sunningdale, Watson draining birdie putts on the first, fourth and fifth holes.
At the par-2 13th Watson missed a birdie effort from eight feet - the same distance as his missed putt at the 72nd hole in Turnberry, which would have given him a sixth Open Championship title.
"I'm not very good at eight footers right now," he joked.
On the 18th his birdie effort lipped out to leave Watson three shots off Funk’s furious early pace.
"It was a good start," said Watson. "I played well, I made some good early putts and missed some makeable putts in the middle of the round. I played a good round of golf, kept the ball in play off the tee, which is critical here. I'm obviously happy with a 67 starting out - it was a good score."
Funk was only one under par at the turn, thanks to a birdie at the par- 5 opening hole, but the 53 year old burst into life on the back nine with five birdies, including one at the 17th where he chipped in from a bunker.
"The front nine I got out of position numerous times and made some great par putts," said Funk.
"And then I made an unexpected birdie at 11 and started hitting it close from there. Any time you do what I did on 17, it's pretty nice."
Sam Torrance, who resides close to Sunningdale and regularly plays the course, is alongside Watson on three under, as are Americans Jerry Bruner and Tom Kite and two-time Open winner Greg Norman.
