Hugh Hunter's Clackmannan county news
TOP PERFORMANCE FROM GARY
The Clackmannan county boys' team turned in one of their best performances in recent years when they finished ninth equal among the 16 teams in the 2009 Scottish boys' area team championship at Ballumbie Castle golf course, Dundee on Sunday.
Player of the day for Clackmannan was undoubtedly Dollar’s Gary Chalmers who found good form in both foursomes and singles. Partnered by fellow Dollar golfer Steven McPherson in the morning, the two boys recorded a fine score of 73, the second best of the morning … and it could have been better as they dropped shots on the closing holes.
The other Clackmannanshire pairing of Grant Dowie (Alloa) and Daniel Ashe (Alva) got away to a bad start, dropping seven shots to par over the first five holes, but steadied after that finishing in 82, leaving Clackmannan in eighth position after the morning play.
In the afternoon singles it was Gary again with a solid one over par 70, producing some classy play, especially over the closing holes.
Daniel Ashe, making his first appearance in a county boys' team, demonstrated he had the skills needed in his round of 75. Grant and Steven were a bit further back.
The team total of 381 for foursomes and best three singles scores tied with Fife, finishing 17 shots behind the first-time winners, North District.
Gary’s 70 was only three behind the individual winner, Jack Scott (Deeside), and put him among the elite Scottish Boy golfers. Well done!!
CALLUM WELL UP IN WALES
In the Welsh Open over the Celtic Manor course, Callum Macaulay (Tulliallan) once again made the cut with a three under par score. A poor outward nine in the third round was a slight set back , but he rallied with good inward nines in both the third and fourth rounds to finish in 30th position with a 2 over par total of 286 (68,71,76,71) and make more progress to retaining his European Tour card.
The highlight of his final round was an eagle 2 at the 377 yard 15th hole. He continues to make progress in the World Golf rankings---his current position is 363.
