The South of Scotland pair followed up their four-under-par 68 in the opening round of better-ball play with a 69 under a greensomes format.

McLean comes out of darkness
with a winning 3-under-par 67

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Scotland youth cap Philip McLean (pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency), from Peterhead won today’s North-east Alliance at Deeside Golf Club with a remarkable score of three-under-par 67, despite playing the last four holes in total darkness.
A record field of 116 meant that Philip, a 21-year-old +3 player, did not start until 1pm and it was after 5pm by the time he finished.
McLean’s only bogeys in his round came at the 14th, when the light was fading fast, and the 18th, which he said was "Just a case of hitting and hoping you find the ball. I missed the green left with my second shot with a four-iron and could not even see the hole for my little pitch shot. I was glad to get down in two putts."
He had birdies at the first, sixth, 12th, 13th and 17th. His 3 at the par-4 penultimate hole has to rank as one of the best birdies he has ever scored, given that he could not see the fairway from the tee nor the green for his second shot.
“I’ve never finished a round in conditions like that before,” said Philip. “I was playing instinctive golf but it had been four years since I last played Deeside so I did not have much to go on for remembering the holes.
McLean, although he benefited from being a long, straight hitter, admitted he was lucky to escape the disasters that befell some other late finishers who could not find their golf balls, even after good strikes into the darkness.
David Corkey, for instance, hit a "great drive" off the 18th tee, was sure it would be waiting for him up the fairway ... but he could not find it. "I can only presume it plugged." The hole cost him an 8.
Four players tied for second place on par 70 – first man off Billy Main (Murcar Links), Banchory assistant pro Stewart Davidson, Fergus Bissett (Banchory) and Chris Robb (Inchmarlo), another of the late finishers.
Bisset, like many others, struggled on the very wet, very slow greens. Three under par after a fourth birdie of the day at the 13th, he dropped three shots over the last five holes, starting with three putts at the 14th followed by further bogeys at the 15th and 18th.
David Law (Hazlehead) lost two balls off the tee in recording a 72.
Scottish women's champion Michele Thomson (McDonald Ellon) had a 78 (38-40) off the men's tees. She was in the same threesome as Philip McLean and Ross Cameron, so she too played the closing holes in darkness. Cameron did well to finish with a 70.

Golf Leagues

MONDAY NIGHT LEAGUE
It's all change at the top of the Monday night league and one team should consider changing their name. The Neverwillbees became the Justmightbees after a stunning performance that jumped them up from third to first.
Their first 3 weeks efforts gave no indication of what was about to happen and the poor Matthew MacPherson team didn’t know what hit them as the Neverwillbees more that double their total points score with and incredible tally of 94 – three times more that the MacPherson could accumulate.
Last week's leaders BM Trucks fell to the Juniors in a relatively low scoring encounter with the Juniors long game proving decisive as they outscored the Trucks in the furthest, and highest scoring, target.
These pushed the Juniors onto the same points total as the Trucks and the Neverwillbees with only the shots scored totals separating the teams.
Trilight had the bye this week and still scored a creditable 48 to keep them in touch with the leading group. Matthew MacPherson still finds himself on the bottom and with next week's match against the Juniors could have a tough time ahead.
Matthew MacPherson 31 – 94 The Neverwillbees
BM Trucks 33 – 41 Loch Ness Juniors.
Trilight (Bye) 48.

TUESDAY NIGHT LEAGUE

Midway through the Tuesday night league it looks like a 3 horse race for the 2 places in the playoffs. Both Fairways and Luckless Leadbetters maintained their unbeaten records with wins over Tag Team and The Sainties respectively but no one could say that these teams are unbeatable given their scores in the first 4 games.
The Coastguards have just the one defeat on their record, at the hands of Fairways, so are snapping at the heals of the top two and as Fairways take on the Leadbetters next week we could see a decisive move by one of the teams.
The Sainties are now 4 points adrift of the top and with just 3 games left need to find their scoring boots, and a bit of help from the other teams if they are to challenge for the play-offs. Fairhurst finally got off the mark with a win over fellow bottom feeders Pat’s Pet’s and with Muirton Marvels and Tag Team also on just 2 points the race for the wooden spoon could be equally as exciting as the race for the top.

Pat’s Pets 12 – 59 Fairhurst.
Coastguards 54 – 23 Muirton Marvels.
Tag Team 21 – 31 Fairways.
Luckless Leadbetters 63 – 32 The Sainties.

LAMBOURNE PAIR TOO GOOD FOR
EUROPEAN FATHER AND SON RIVALS

PRESS RELEASE
Martin and Connor Hamilton produced a near faultless display of golf to lead from pillar to post to be crowned the inaugural winners of the 2008 European Father and Son Golf Championship amid emotional scenes in Spain.
Competitors of all ages from across Europe gathered at the PortAventura Golf Resort on Spain’s Costa Dorada coast hoping to become the first ever champions in the 54-hole event but they had little answer to the Hamiltons’ brilliant play.
With Connor leading the way, the nine-handicappers, from The Lambourne Golf Club in Burnham, Bucks, never looked back after scoring 45 Stableford points in the first round over the resort’s new North Course - designed by Greg Norman - and held a five-point lead over the 49-team field going into the final day.
Hampshire duo Andy and Tom Tremlett, from Old Thorns Golf and Country Club, and Paul and Lance Round, from The Chase Golf Club near Cannock, Staffs, emerged out of the chasing pack to challenge and reduce the deficit to just two with nine holes remaining.
The Tremletts then halved the lead again with a birdie at the par-4 11th hole but Martin and his 15-year-old son held their nerve under intense pressure on the North Course’s treacherous back nine to hold on and lift the trophy with a third round of 40 points - with Connor sealing victory in style with a birdie on the 475-metre par-5 18th hole.
Their final winning score of 125 points was three clear of the Tremletts with the Rounds, who play off 14 and six, two points further back.
"The first two days were all about Connor and I‘ve never seen him play better," said Martin, a dentist who lives in Slough with wife Gayathri and his son.
"We couldn't eat breakfast on the final morning and things got a bit nervy over the first few holes of our final round. Our shots were going one club further than normal because of the adrenaline that was flowing but thankfully I managed to hole a few putts to steady the ship and we got things back together.
"I’ve never known pressure like it with the SKY TV cameras on us but we both played some good shots at crucial times in the final few holes to see us home.
"I’m so proud of Connor and it’s hard to sum up what it feels like to have won. We came out here to hopefully play some good golf and have a good time, but the whole event has exceeded all our expectations.
"It’s been a fantastic week and we can’t wait to come back and defend our title."
The better-ball tournament, played off threequarter handicaps, attracted a high-quality field including professionals, golf club secretaries, golf press, juniors and amateurs.
The Hamiltons' achievement was even more remarkable as Connor only started playing golf two years ago.
The teenager was still a 20-handicapper at the start of this year but his handicap has come tumbling down in the last few months and it looks certain to drop further in the next 12 months.
Connor, who goes to High Wycombe Royal Grammar School, the same school as European Tour star Luke Donald went to, added: "I was never that interested in golf before I started but I played a lot over the summer and my handicap keeps coming down. I’ve actually struck the ball better but I’ve never putted as well as this before. Everything seemed to be going in, especially on the first day. We knew that everybody was trying to beat us and it’s great that we managed to hang on."
The Tremletts thrust themselves into contention by top-scoring on the second day over PortAventura’s picturesque South Course with 43 points but had no complaints at the final outcome.
Andy, who plays off a handicap of ten, two shots less than his 17-year-old-old son, said: "We couldn’t have played any better and Tom struck the ball brilliantly. We thought we had a chance at one stage, but we made a bit of a mess of the 17th hole and the best pair won over the three days."
Teams from across the UK and countries including Sweden, Finland, the Czech Republic, France and Germany took part in the event, which was open to any amateur and professional father-and-son pairing with no age restrictions.
Eleven-year-old Jack Fletcher, from South Essex Golf Club, was the youngest competitor with his dad Robin while sprightly pensioner Norman Taylor was the oldest player, competing with his 62-year-old son Les at the age of 87.
Phillip Hokr, who plays at Karlstejn Golf Club near Prague in the Czech Republic, produced the shot of the week after firing a hole-in-one at the 162-metre fourth hole on the final day, the second of his career.
But the event was tinged with sadness on the eve of the tournament following the tragic death of one of the fathers, Brett Payne, from Gravesend, at the age of 51.
Tournament director Toby Marsden said: "It has been an amazing few days but it is important that the terrible circumstances in which the week began should not be forgotten. The tragedy was felt by everybody.
"Martin and Connor showed great courage to come through in such testing conditions. We are honoured to have such worthy champions for our first year look forward to welcoming them back to defend their title in 2009.
"The standard of golf produced at events like this never ceases to amaze me, especially from the younger players, and it is great to see such talent coming through. It has been an inspirational week for everyone involved and we’re looking forward to the event being the first of many."

3 Paul/Lance Round (The Chase) - 120 (41, 38, 41).

Exemption Categories changed for
2009 European Tour

By SCOTT CROCKETT
Chief Press Officer, European Tour Staff
The Race to Dubai, which begins with this week’s HSBC Champions in Shanghai, has brought about several changes in the structure of The 2009 European Tour International Schedule, not least in the length of exemptions categories for many of this season’s tournaments and beyond.
The modifications have been undertaken after discussions within the Tournament Committee who felt the need to address the growing size of several winners’ categories, allied to the impact this had on opportunities throughout other exemption categories.
The first change comes in Category 1: Winners of the four Major Championships and The Race to Dubai, which has been reduced from ten years to seven years.
The change in Category 2 comes in the tournaments which now fall into that grouping; ie the BMW PGA Championship is joined by The Dubai World Championship, both of which carry five- year exemptions for the respective winners.
Category 2b continues to have a three-year exemption but, in addition to the winners of the individual World Golf Championship events, the grouping now also features The European Open – reduced from its previous exemption of five years – as well as the Open de France ALSTOM and The Barclays Scottish Open, which are both increased from their previous exemption of two years.
The final change comes in Category 3 which will carry a two-year exemption for the winner of events featuring a prize fund of €1.5 million and above; while Category 3b – events with prize funds below €1.5 million – will see their winner’s exemption drop from two years to one. This latter category will also include the winner of any dual ranking events by virtue of their prize funds.
For purposes of this definition for the 2009 season, the exchange rates at the start of this week – Monday November 3, 2008 – will be used for prize fund calculations in other currencies.
The Committee also felt that Ryder Cup players deserved an improved status within the exemption categories and it was therefore agreed that they will now sit above the top 115 from the previous year’s Order of Merit.
The changes will only affect those players winning any of the above tournaments mentioned from the 2009 season onwards – the length of any exemptions already earned will remain unchanged.

Pablo Larrazabal named Sir Henry
Cotton Rookie of the Year

BY PAUL SYMES
Press Officer, European Tour Staff
Spain’s Pablo Larrazabal has capped a magnificent maiden season on The European Tour by winning the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year Award.
Larrazabal – who succeeds last year’s winner Martin Kaymer of Germany – becomes the fourth Spaniard to receive the award, following José Maria Olazábal in 1986, Sergio Garcia in 1999 and Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño in 2005.
Like that illustrious trio, Larrazabal also claimed his maiden European Tour title in his first full season on Tour. The Spaniard’s victory in the Open de France ALSTOM in June was made all the more remarkable by the fact that he earned his place in the tournament through the 36-hole pre-qualifying event held in Chantilly the previous week.
Despite, in his own words, being “the 150th best player here”, the Barcelona-born 25 year old never looked back after compiling an opening round of 65 at Le Golf National in Versailles, before eventually cruising to a four shot win despite a concerted effort on the final day by Scotland’s Colin Montgomerie.
Larrazabal said: “Obviously the main reason I won the award was for winning the Open de France ALSTOM, and I’ll never forget that victory. To win such a big tournament the way I did, with guys like Lee Westwood and Colin Montgomerie chasing me on the last day, was just amazing.
“It’s an amazing honour to be named the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year, because there are so many great young players on Tour today. If you look at some of the players who have won the award in the past, you get an idea of how big an honour this is.
“You only have to look at last year’s winner, Martin Kaymer, to see how successful you can go on to be after winning the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year Award. Martin is a great example to me because he has had an unbelievable second season, and that is what I have to aim to do in 2009.”
The €666,660 cheque he collected for winning the Open de France ALSTOM accounted for more than half the €960,858 Larrazabal earned in 2008, which saw him finish in 18th place in The Order of Merit.
The other contenders for the award, which was inaugurated in 1960, were Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy and the English duo of Robert Dinwiddie and Ross McGowan.
The selection panel for the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year Award is comprised of The European Tour, The Royal & Ancient and the Association of Golf Writers.
