ROBIN WILSON REPORTS ON THE NORTH DISTRICT
BOYS' CHAMPIONSHIP AT BRORA
In 1923 five times Open champion James Braid designed Brora's par-3 18th hole to be played as a high spoon shot to the green, avoiding the bunkers set into the steep slope on the right.
Eighty-five years forward with modern technology, only the choice of club has altered, a mid-iron, and, using a four-iron, Elgin's Peter Ramsay emulated the Designer's strategy, threading his final tee shot between the bunkers and rolling to down to a foot from the pin.
The resulting birdie 2 from the 16-year-old Elgin junior won the Royal Bank of Scotland North District boys' championship at the East Sutherland links on Sunday with a total of 143 (73 and 70), denying Dale Wright (Alness) (72-72) and Ross Proctor (Forres) (70-74), already in the clubhouse, a play-off chance for the R P B Bain Cup.
The final birdie helped Ramsay cover the final nine holes in two-under-par 32, after a previous birdie at the 14th hole for his second round card of one over par 70 and easily overtake first round leader Kyle Godsman (Hopeman) who, in round one, with a 69, was the only player to match the Brora par of 69 through both rounds.
Wright was declared runner-up and recipient of the bronze medal by virtue of his better second round, a 72, which was also finished of with a birdie 2.
Godsman's first round 69 came from par-matching halves of 35 and 34. Two bogeys, at the third and sixth, cancelled out by birdies at the fifth and seventh on the outward half and after a birdie start to the inward stretch he dropped a shot at the final hole.
Ross Proctor, lying a shot back with 70 that matched the first round CSS, had just one bogey, the 12th, and one birdie, the 15th, in halves of 36 and 34. A further shot behind came Peter Renwick (Invergordon) and local Liam MacDonald.
The local member gave up an opportunity to take a first round lead when he finished with three bogeys in halves of 33 and 38.
Earlier in the season Moray's Roger Clarke won the Spence Trophy at Elgin but he had to settle for a share of sixth place at Brora after two rounds 73.
Local Scottish Under-16 international Calum Stewart was the leading Under-16 player with rounds of 73 and 72 for 145. Ramsay and his brother Derek and other clubmates, Danny Edwards, Calum Reid and Jordan Milne, combined to a double trophy day for Elgin when they won the Emslie Team Shield with a total of 598.
Fortrose and Rosemarkie were second 618, and Inverness third 622.
