Press Release

ENGLISH GOLF UNION SEND BLAINEY
AND STUART TO SOUTH AFRICA

The English Golf Union is sending two members of its ‘A’ Squad, Gregg Blainey (Bearwood Lakes) and Sam Stuart (St Annes Old Links), to contest the South African amateur championship at Royal Durban Golf Club from March 2 to 7.
Blainey, 25, from Berkshire, enjoyed a successful 2007, winning the Berkhamsted and Lee Westwood Trophies and finishing third in the West of England stroke-play. He is also a former winner of the Herts Stag and Herts Bowl and has an earlier third place in the St Mellion International.
Stuart, 19, is a former Lancashire boy champion, who has been promoted from the Under-21 Squad to the ‘A‘ Squad this year. In 2007, he won the Hulbert Trophy in Manchester, finished third in the North of England youth championship, tied fifth in the Duncan Putter and the Lancashire championship and was eighth in the Tillman Trophy.
The week in Durban begins with a 36-hole qualifying competition after which the leading 64 players and ties will progress to the match-play championship. Each round will be contested over 18 holes until the final which will be 36 holes.
The prestigious title has come to England in recent years with David Dixon winning the title in 2001. There will be a team competition over the qualifying rounds with the aggregate scores of both players to count.
