AGUILAR BIRDIES THE LAST TO WIN THE
INDONESIA OPEN FROM MILKA SINGH
After making most of the running, Chile's Felipe Aguilar had to birdie the 72nd hole to win the Indonesia Open at the Cengkareng Golf Club, Jakarta today.
Aguilar sank a five-foot putt for a final round of two-under-par 68 and a 72-hole total of 18-under 262.
India's Jeev Milkha Singh had led by a shot when he teed off at the 18th but dropped back to second after a bogey, narrowly missing out on a play-off when his putt for par lipped out.
Prom Meesawat of Thailand and James Kamte of South Africa tied for third, one stroke further back after rounds of 67 in an event that was co-sanctioned by the Asian and European PGA Tours.
Aguilar started the final round leading by two shots but lost his advantage after a nervous start. The little-known 33-year-old regained his composure to stay in touch down the back nine and then seized his chance on the last hole.
"I was a little bit more aggressive on the putts coming in because I had to try and chase it," he said.
"After Jeev made bogey on the 16th, I realised that I was still in the game. I knew I had to make a three on the 18th for a play-off. I was so sure that I was going to birdie.
"I didn't expect him to bogey but you never know how golf is. It's not over till it's over.
"It feels awesome! This is life changing for me - I can play whatever I want to play and can play easily. Hopefully there is more of this to come."
Singh, who won the Asian Tour Order of Merit in 2006, lost his chance of winning with two wayward drives on the 16th and 18th holes in a final round 67.
"It was Aguilar's day and not mine today," he said. "It was disappointing for me but I guess that's golf."
Prom charged up the leaderboard when he went through the front nine in 32 but the momentum ended with a double-bogey on the 16th.
"Everything was perfect except for that one shot on the 16th. I tried to go for the pin across the water but it fell short," he said.
"I had to hook the ball for about 30 yards from the water to the pin. It was just so unlucky."
