BRAEHEAD WIN ALEXANDER TROPHY ON HOME TURF
By HUGH HUNTER
Dating from 1914 when the trophy was donated by Alexander’s stores in Falkirk, the Alexander Trophy men's team event has been contested between the golf clubs in Stirlingshire and Clackmannanshire for over 80 years.
Each club is represented by four players, best three scores to count. The 2007 event took place at Braehead Golf Club with 11 clubs competing (five from Clackmannanshire and six from Stirlingshire).
Disappointingly, several of the Stirlingshire clubs were notable by their absence. Home club advantage prevailed, aided by an outstanding round of a six under par 64 from local Ross Benvie. Out in a 2 under par 33, including an out of bounds at the fifth hole, Ross raced back in four-under-31, finishing just outside his own course record.
Jim Muir with 72 and club junior John McPherson with 73 gave Braehead a team total of 209, five shots ahead of Falkirk Golf Club. Wee County clubs took four of the top six places.
