Scottish women's amateur championship at Barassie
v THOMSON IN THE SEMI-FINALS
This afternoon's semi-finals in the 104th staging of the Scottish women's amateur championship at Kilmarnock Barassie will feature:
Top seed Jenna Wilson (Strathaven) versus the No 5 qualifier Heather MacRae (Dunblane New)
and
No 6 qualifier Emily Ogilvy (Auchterarder) against the No 2 seed Michele Thomson (McDonald Ellon).
Top seed Jenna Wilson from Strathaven ended the title defence of Martine Pow (Selkirk) in the quarter-finals on a morning that started off very wet and windy but cleared to be bright and sunny before lunchtime.
Jenna did not lose a hole and was three under par in beating Martine in under three hours.
Jenna, pictured above, has yet to play the last four holes in the match-play stages of the championship this week. This morning she did not have to play the last six.
Jenna's only bogey came at the second which was halved. She birdied the fifth, eighth, 11th and 12th.
For Martine, it was her last ever appearance in the championship.
"I had my 42nd birthday this week and now's the time to bow out and let the youngsters take over. I'm satisfied with what I achieved in tournament golf," said the British mid-amateur champion ... a title she will not be defending.
"I just don't have the time to play and to practise enough to hold my own at this level of golf. And it's better to step down than to struggle to keep up with the full-time amateurs, etc."
Heather MacRae, again striking the ball well and hitting the par-5s with iron seconds, was a 2 and 1 winner over the 1998 champion, 39-year-old Elaine Moffat from the St Regulus Club, St Andrews.
Heather was one up after nine holes but was pulled back to square when Elaine birdied the 10th.
Heather countered with a birdie to regain the lead at the 12th and the enthralling contest continued to see-saw one way and the other. Miss Moffat squared the match at the 13th. After a series of halves, Heather finished the stronger, winning the 16th with a par (one up) and the 17th with a birdie.
Heather lost in the semi-finals to Martine Pow at Dunbar 12 months ago.
Emily Ogilvy beat the surprise packet of the match-play stages, 18-year-old Brisbane-born daughter of an Edinburgh man, Edwina Lowery-Gold who lives in Norwich.
Emily won by 3 and 1 against Edwina who yesterday knocked out the No 3 seed Megan Briggs and then claimed the scalp of British international Krystle Caithness for the second time in nine months or so.
"I won but I thought I played terribly this morning," said 23-year Emily who had a three-under-par 72 in the first qualifying round and then a 10 at a short hole in the second round.
"I just couldn't putt at all.
Despite that honest assessment, Miss Ogilvy, who played four years on the American college circuit while a student at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock, went one up at the 11th and two up at the 14th with par figures. Edwina held her at bay with a couple of halves before Emily won the long 17th with a par for a 3 and 1 victory.
Michele Thomson was level par approximately in beating the experienced Claire Hargan from Mortonhall by 2 and 1.
Michele birdied the first, second and fifth but lost the third and fourth. Many holes were halved in this match as Miss Hargan, winner of the Midlothian county title five years in a row, hung on to the bootlace of her younger and stronger opponent.
Claire unexpectedly three-putted the 11th to fall two down but she won back the 14th with a par to be one down on the 15th tee. Two tense halves followed before Miss Thomson used her strength to birdie the long 17th for the match.
The Clark Rosebowl final will be between two Lothians players - Wendy Nicholson (Broomieknowe) and Pamela Williamson (Baberton).
