CAPTAIN ROY WOOD
By ROBIN WILSON
Life membership of the Brora Golf Club was conferred on Roy Wood, the outgoing club captain at the annual general meeting of the club.
In a change of career in the mid-1970s, when he moved from Edinburgh, where he worked with electronic giants Ferranti, to Brora and take over the local butcher's shop owned by his father-in-law, Ack MacDonald, Roy joined the golf club and soon became one of its most popular personalities.
In the early 1980s he was elected to the committee and served continuously since then until 2006. He had his first two spells as captain in 1994 and 1995 and was re-elected captain again in 2001, occupying the post until standing down at the end of the current season.
A very popular figure around the clubhouse he has also been secretary to the very successful visitors' golf week for the past two years and he will continue in this post.
Many members and visitors were sorry to learn in early 2005 that he suffered a slight stroke but were delighted that he recovered to continue his work for the club and remain in office.
With the aid of a buggy Roy hopes to play some more next year and also return to his caddying role.
With Roy's departure from office, Alec Rennie, an ex-Brora Radio Station officer, was elected to the post of club captain. His vice-captain will be Alistair Risk, a former captain of Whitekirk Golf Club, East Lothian. Ken Lorimer was re elected Brora Golf Club president.
