SALTMAN BROTHERS GO OUT
ALLIED SURVEYORS SCOTTISH MEN'S AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
Hosted by Nairn Golf Club
ABERDONIAN MATCHIESON MAKES IT
THROUGH TO THE QUARTER-FINALS
All three Saltman brothers from Craigielaw were beaten on the fourth day of the Allied Surveyors Scottish men's amateur championship at Nairn.
They all made it through to the last 16 - an historic event in itself - but then they were picked off in the afternoon's fifth-round ties.
Elliott the eldest was the first to go, beaten 2 and 1 by Paul O'Hara (Colville Park) who reached the final at Gullane two years ago.
Then teenager Zack, so unlucky to finish second in last week's Scottish Under-18 boys' open stroke-play championship at Alloa, was beaten 3 and 2 by the experienced Scottish international player and Glasgow financier, Jonathan King, a member of Glasgow Golf Club. King fired six birdies at the hapless Saltman who will be thinking he must get a break soon. Might come at next week's boys' home internationals!
And the last Saltman to bow out of what has been a fascinating championship was Walker Cup man Lloyd, surprisingly beaten by Bobby Rushford (Grangemouth). Rushford, a Stirling University student from Grangemouth, won by 2 and 1 on his 19th birthday.
The key mistake by Lloyd Saltman was to three-putt the 16th and lose it to go one down.
Scott Jamieson (Cathkin Braes), whose father Peter, a scratch player, was beaten earlier in the day, is the only one of the eight seeds to claim their allotted place in the last eight.
The seeded Richie Ramsay (Royal Aberdeen), the North-east's great hope of following in the footsteps of Graham Gordon, winner of the title two years ago at The Duke's, was beaten at the 19th in the fourth round by Callum Macaulay (Tulliallan).
But there is one Aberdonian in the last eight - Terry Mathieson (Murcar), who works at the King's Links Golf Centre and has a terrific match-play record for the North-east District over the last few years.
Mathieson knocked out the last North player in the tournament, Duncan Stewart (Grantown on Spey) on the 18th green of a tense tussle.
In 2002 Terry was beaten in the semi-finals of the Scottish amateur championship at Western Gailes, where Scott Jamieson was beaten in the final.
Terry Mathieson, like Bobby Rushford, celebrated his birthday in style ... 26 up for Terry who was so cautious about still being involved in the action at the end of Thurday that he booked out of his bed and breakfast before heading for the Nairn links.
Friday morning's quarter-finals look like this:
8.0 Scott Jamieson v Paul O'Hara.
8.15 Callum Macaulay v Jonathan King.
8.30 Gordon Stevenson v Bobby Rushford.
8.45 Terry Mathieson v Kevin McAlpine.
If you live in the Nairn area, why not get along and watch some of the Friday action. It won't cost you a cent and it will be as entertaining as anything you see on TV.
