Winners over Wales by 11.5 to 3.5 on opening day

Great start by Scots to home internationals at

Royal Portrush

FROM THE SGU WEBSITE
Scotland moved into the hunt for more team success after a superb start to their Fairstone Men’s Home Internationals bid in Ireland.
Over the renowned links of Royal Portrush, Ian Rae’s charges – the reigning European champions – eased to a comfortable 11.5 – 3.5 win over Wales.

> View scores from the Men’s Home Internationals

With England and hosts Ireland drawing 7.5 – 7.5, Rae’s team sit top of the standings as they seek to emulate the achievements of the Scotland Boys team, who won their Home Internationals last week in Wales.
Walker Cup hopefuls Jack McDonald (Kilmarnock Barasssie) and Graeme Robertson (Glenbervie) again shone for the Scots to secure two points from two, with Peebles’ Craig Howie and new Scottish Amateur champion Robert MacIntyre from Glencruitten also picking up two wins.
The Scots almost whitewashed Wales in the foursomes as they took four points from a possible five. Yet, apart from a 6&5 win for Robertson and McDonald in the opening game, it was a lot closer than the final tally suggested. Three games were decided on 18, while Tom Williams and Jack Davidson picked up Wales’ only point.
In the afternoon, the scoreboard turned blue as Scotland collected seven-and-a-half points from a possible 10. There were big wins for Kilmacolm’s Matthew Clark (7&6) and Howie (6&4) while former University of Stirling team-mates McDonald and Robertson added a point each too.
Falkirk’s Ryan Campbell, on his senior debut, and Barry Hume from Haggs Castle – back on the international stage after a 14-year absence – also recorded singles victories.
National coach Rae said:  “We had a great morning foursomes. I always think if you can get away to a good start it settles you down for the afternoon. Jack and Graeme have a great foursomes record together, so we keep them as our main pairing. They have been playing well all summer. Hopefully we can keep our form going.”
Play resume this morning at 7.30am when Ireland played Wales. England and Scotland began their match at 8.20am.
