HALL GOES INTO SECOND DAY WITH ONE -SHOT LEAD
Embedded videoBen Hall, TSR Recruitment, holds a one-shot lead going into the second round of The World Snooker Jessie May golf championship at Donnington Grove after day one.
Hall had an unblemished round of 65 with seven birdies to stand one clear of Dongwon Kim (Team R&E) who posted a card of 66, six under in a round that also included seven birdies.
Luke Cornford, Cooden Beach Golf Club sits one back from Kim on five under after five birdies and an eagle.
Michael Saunders (Dartford Golf Club), Thomas Curtis (Pannal Golf Club), Mikael Lundberg (Lumine Golf Club), Dan Brown (Romanby Golf Club) and Scott Fallon (North Middlesex Golf Club) all went four deep through their opening rounds.
Eleven players all recorded scores of three under, tied for fifth going into their second rounds. Notable rounds came from Harry Konig, Tiverton Golf Club Snug Earphones, with a clean card and three birdies. Tim Rice from Limerick Golf Club recovered from back to back bogies on the front nine to finish on three under.
Mike Bedford, Bramhall Park Golf Club, hit a hole in one on the seventeenth par 3 to finish his day one on under. Bedford spoke to the PGA EuroPro Tour after where he explained it was only his second ever hole in one in his career and the first one in ten years.

Title-holder Attoe makes flying start to

senior men's open title defence

Defending champion Ian Attoe launched his defence of the English Senior Men’s Open with a superb six-under 65 at Holme Hall Golf Club, Lincolnshire.
He leads by two from Mark Stones of Boyce Hill, Essex, with another six players also beating par on the opening day of the championship.
“It was a perfect round of golf, I’ve never had one like it,” said Attoe, from Worplesdon Golf Club in Surrey.
His bogey free round started with a pair of birdies and he played the more difficult back nine in four-under 30, signing off with his sixth birdie of the day on the 18th.
His score is just one shot off the course record of 64, held by England Golf Championship Director, James Crampton.
“I holed a couple of crucial five-footers for par,” said Attoe, who won this championship in 2015, as well as last year. “I only hit one poor shot all day, my second into the par five 9th, and I putted well, which I haven’t been doing.
“I was a bit apprehensive coming into today, but under the pressure it all went beautifully and I am really pleased.”
Attoe was one of eight players to beat par in the first round of the championship, which is being contested by 288 competitors at both Holme Hall and Elsham Golf Clubs.
Closest to him is Mark Boyce on 67 while Adrian Firman, from Peterborough Milton, returned three-under 68, both playing at Holme Hall.
On 69 is Paul Wharton (Woodhall Spa), who had an eagle two on the first hole at Elsham; and Tim Whittaker (Beaconsfield) who played in the most blustery of the conditions at Holme Hall.
“Both the clubs have been incredible,” said Whittaker. “They’re so welcoming. They’ve both been brilliant in the way they’ve prepared the courses and they are playing very nicely.”
Also under par, on 70, are Lancashire’s Bryan Hughes (Hesketh) – a past British Senior Champion – and Ian Crowther (Royal Lytham & St Annes); and John Coupe (Canterbury, Kent).
A group of four players shot level par, including last year’s runner-up. Rich Jones, from Rotherham, Yorkshire, who lost to Attoe in a play-off.
The day produced two holes in one. Glynn Catterall (Rowlands Castle, Hampshire) used a six-iron for his shot to the 160-yard 13th at Holme Hall. Steve Toyne, a past winner of the Australian Senior Match Play Championship, had his ace on the 162-yard sixth at Elsham.
After tomorrow’s second round the field will be cut to the leading 80 players and ties who qualify for the final day’s play at Holme Hall.

Elaine Moffat secures another Scottish Senior Women's Open title

Defending champion Elaine Moffat picked up where she left off on Day 1 as she secured the 36-hole stroke-play title at this year’s Scottish Senior Women’s Open Championship at Edzell.
A solid round of 76 in reasonable conditions saw her finish +2 overall and record a two-shot victory over Aileen Baker of Crail.    Baker posted the best round of the day, 75, to finish on +4 overall.
Despite finishing strongly, playing her last seven holes in -1, she couldn’t quite close the gap on Moffat and had to settle for a runner-up finish.   Speaking to Scottish Golf about her strokeplay victory, Moffat said,
“It’s amazing, it’s still sinking in but it’s a really nice feeling.  It was a hard game of golf and I was really aware that I needed to stay focussed.  There was definitely added pressure starting the day with the lead, but in a good way; it made me stay on my toes.
"I didn’t play my best, but I made good decisions and I’m pleased to have got through it. It’s something I’ve not won before so it’s lovely to have that under my belt.  I’m going to enjoy the moment. I have to thank my coach Mike Rae who has been key in helping me to achieve this.”
On regrouping for the start of the match-play tomorrow, Moffat continued, “I’ll go home, get all the gear sorted out and once I’ve done that I’ll just try and rest up and get my brain back in the right mode for another day on the golf course.”
Moffat’s nearest challengers at the start of the day, Sandra Jackson of Royal Dornoch and Alison Davidson of Stirling, fell away on day 2, both shooting +8.  Both players will now look to regroup going into the knock-out stages.
Last year’s beaten finalist, Sheena Wood, recovered from an opening round of 84 to make the matchplay with a solid second round of 78, keeping her hopes of going one better than last year alive. The biggest leaderboard climb of the day belonged to Murrayfield’s Caroline Steedman, who bounced back from a first round 85 to shoot 76 today and finish in the top 16, having started the day in a tie for 34th.
The tournament will now move to the knock-out stages where the top 16 scratch scores will progress to the match-play, starting tomorrow morning with the cut falling at +14 after the stroke-play.  The top 16 net scores from the rest of the field will also now compete in the net match-play.
